FAQ

What is accepted

We include all newly published scientific publications which a professor or another member of the FH Aachen notifies the OPUS team of, and/or which can be verified bibliographically by the OPUS team. Counted among those are scientific texts which
  • have been appraised (were subject to a review process)
  • have been published in trade journals, conference and edited journals, resp., or monographs
  • have been published in printed or electronic form,
  • are accessible to and quotable for third parties.

  • Student final papers which
  • were submitted in electronic form and
  • were produced at the FH Aachen, or in cooperation with the FH Aachen
  • and have the author's as well as the supervising professor's consent for publication.

  • What is not accepted (exemplary, non-conclusive list):
  • Legal opinions (which are not publicly available)
  • Internal (research) reports
  • Lectures (provided they are not available in written form and stored on the OPUS server)
  • Abstracts
  • Poster articles
  • Newspaper articles
  • Articles which do not cite the author's name (e.g. Dimensionen)
  • Expressions of opinion (e.g. letters to the editor)
  • Boolean Operators AND, OR, NOT

When using the Simple Search, multiple terms are combined automatically by AND. For a more targeted search, it is advisable to use the Boolean Operators in order to combine several search terms with each other.

AND: The document has to contain all search terms.

OR: The document has to contain one of the search terms. This function widens your search and is recommended if there are different terms for a specific topic.

    article OR paper

NOT: This function has an excluding effect and can be used to reduce a hit list: Documents which contain the one term must not contain the other.

    article NOT paper
The Boolean Operators work for the Advanced Search as well. They can be used to combine different search terms within one search field. For example, the following query comes up with all documents by the author "Smith" in the years 2002 and 2003:
    Author: Smith
    Year: 2002 OR 2003

    Wildcards

If you aren't certain how a search term, e.g. a name, is spelt, or if you want to widen your search, you can use * and ? as wildcards. It is not possible to use these at the beginning of a search term.

Example 1: chemi* will find "chemical", "chemistry" or "chemist"
Example 2: licen?e will find "licence" and "license".

You can use quotation marks (") to search for phrases.

I have some more questions - whom shall I contact?

    What's metadata?
    Metadata can be defined as
    • data describing one or more ressources or as
    • data associated with an object and describing it
Basically metadata is describing documents, objects or services and contains information about their content, structure or form. More abstractly metadata is a description of data or "data about data". Bibliographic data sets and catalog entries in library catalogs can be seen as a kind of metadata.

This repository is using metadata in the Dublin Core Metedata Element Set (short Dublin Core (DC)) which has fifteen basic elements. Dublin Core is the result of international efforts to reach a collective consensus in describing electronic objects (in the broadest sense). The Library of Congress (LoC), the Online Cataloging Library Center (OCLC) and several national libraries are dealing with Dublin Core in many projects and are close to introduce the system respectively.

This does not necessarily contradict a publication on our server.
In any case, please check whether your contract permits a publication on our server!
In order to do that, you can, for example, check the SHERPA/ROMEO list.
Authors can choose which terms of use must be regarded for their publication. These terms are defined in a license. This repository supports different licenses, from which you can choose one (i.e. Creative Commons Licenses/).
