The MSDH system consists of a lower basin, eight horizontal stages, a field of four flat thermal collectors with a total area of 8.4 m2, 3 Kw PV panels and solar batteries. During the day the system is heated by thermal energy, and at night by heating resistors, powered by solar batteries. These batteries are charged by the photovoltaic panels during the day. More specifically, during the day and at night, we analyse the temperature of the stages and the production of distilled water according to the solar irradiation intensity and the electric heating power, supplied by the solar batteries. The simulations were carried out in the meteorological conditions of the winter month (February 2020), presenting intensities of irradiance and ambient temperature reaching 824 W/m2 and 23 °C respectively. The results obtained show that during the day the system is heated by the thermal collectors, the temperature of the stages and the quantity of water produced reach 80 °C and 30 Kg respectively. At night, from 6p.m. the system is heated by the electric energy stored in the batteries, the temperature of the stages and the quantity of water produced reach respectively 90 °C and 104 Kg for an electric heating power of 2 Kw. Moreover, when the electric power varies from 1 Kw to 3 Kw the quantity of water produced varies from 92 Kg to 134 Kg. The number of single scattered coincidences alone is in the same order of magnitude as true coincidences. In this work, a compact Compton camera module based on monolithic scintillation material is investigated as a detector ring module. The detector interactions are simulated with Monte Carlo package GATE. The scattering angle inside the tissue is derived from the energy of the scattered photon, which results in a set of possible scattering trajectories or broken line of response. The Compton kinematics collimation reduces the number of solutions. Additionally, the time of flight information helps localize the position of the annihilation. One of the questions of this investigation is related to how the energy, spatial and temporal resolutions help confine the possible annihilation volume. A comparison of currently technically feasible detector resolutions (under laboratory conditions) demonstrates the influence on this annihilation volume and shows that energy and coincidence time resolution have a significant impact. An enhancement of the latter from 400 ps to 100 ps leads to a smaller annihilation volume of around 50\%, while a change of the energy resolution in the absorber layer from 12\% to 4.5\% results in a reduction of 60\%. The inclusion of single tissue-scattered data has the potential to increase the sensitivity of a scanner by a factor of 2 to 3 times. The concept can be further optimized and extended for multiple scatter coincidences and subsequently validated by a reconstruction algorithm.}, language = {en} } @article{KaemperDoepperEhrfeldetal.1995, author = {K{\"a}mper, Klaus-Peter and D{\"o}pper, J. and Ehrfeld, W. and Hagemann, B.}, title = {Simulation supported design of LIGA Microsystems. They can lead to chronic and acute diseases. Due to the chemical properties of cyanide it is frequently used for industrial processes such as extraction of silver and gold. Heavy metals can be found as trace elements in nature and are often applied in industries e.g., galvanization processes. Up to now, cyanide and heavy metals can be detected by several sensors separately and their detection is often limited to laboratory investigations. In this publication, with regard to an in situ analysis, a new miniaturized silicon-based sensor system for the simultaneous detection of cyanide and heavy metals in aqueous solutions is presented that is based on chalcogenide glass-based micro ion-selective electrodes (µISEs). The µISEs are incorporated into a specially designed measuring system for the simultaneous detection of heavy metals and cyanide in solutions and validated by simultaneous measurements of Cu2+- and CN--ions, Cd2+- and CN-- ions and Pb2+- and CN--ions. The particular sensor system has shown good sensor properties in the µ-molar ion-concentration range. The most common biofuels today are biodiesel and bioethanol. Since diesel engines are rather rare in aviation this survey is focusing on ethanol admixed to gasoline products. The Directive 2003/30/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of May 8th 2003 on the promotion of the use of biofuels or other renewable fuels for transport encourage a growing admixture of biogenic fuel components to fossil automotive gasoline. Some aircraft models equipped with spark ignited piston engines are approved for operation with automotive gasoline, frequently called "MOGAS" (motor gasoline). The majority of those approvals is limited to MOGAS compositions that do not contain methanol or ethanol beyond negligible amounts. In the past years (bio-)MTBE or (bio-)ETBE have been widely used as blending component of automotive gasoline whilst the usage of low-molecular alcohols like methanol or ethanol has been avoided due to the handling problems especially with regard to the strong affinity for water. With rising mandatory bio-admixtures the conversion of the basic biogenic ethanol to ETBE, causing a reduction of energetic payoff, becomes more and more unattractive. Therefore the direct ethanol admixture is accordingly favoured. Due to the national enforcements of the directive 2003/30/EC more oxygenates produced from organic materials like bioethanol have started to appear in automotive gasolines already. The current fuel specification EN 228 already allows up to 3 \% volume per volume (v/v) (bio-)methanol or up to 5 \% v/v (bio-)ethanol as fuel components. This is also roughly the amount of biogenic components to comply with the legal requirements to avoid monetary penalties for producers and distributors of fuels. Since automotive fuel is cheaper than the common aviation gasoline (AVGAS), creates less problems with lead deposits in the engine, and in general produces less pollutants it is strongly favoured by pilots. But being designed for a different set of usage scenarios the use of automotive fuel with low molecular alcohols for aircraft operation may have adverse effects in aviation operation. Increasing amounts of ethanol admixtures impose various changes in the gasoline's chemical and physical properties, some of them rather unexpected and not within the range of flight experiences even of long-term pilots.}, language = {en} } @article{Fabo2010, author = {Fabo, Sabine}, title = {Sisyphus wird Steiff}, series = {Pr{\"a}dikat spießig (Boxhorn ; 21)}, volume = {2010}, journal = {Pr{\"a}dikat spießig (Boxhorn ; 21)}, editor = {Mohr, Klaus}, publisher = {FH Aachen, Fachbereich Gestaltung}, address = {Aachen}, issn = {1864-2535}, pages = {58 -- 61}, year = {2010}, abstract = {Eine Reise durch die fremde Welt eines Kaufhaus-Schaufensters. It requires a broader understanding of the surface properties of the target objects, with particular interest focused on those near Earth. Knowledge of composition, multi-scale surface structure, thermal response, and interior structure is required to design, validate and operate missions addressing these three fields. The current level of understanding is occasionally simplified into the phrase, "If you've seen one asteroid, you've seen one asteroid", meaning that the in-situ characterization of SSSBs has yet to cross the threshold towards a robust and stable scheme of classification. This would enable generic features in spacecraft design, particularly for ISRU and science missions. Currently, it is necessary to characterize any potential target object sufficiently by a dedicated pre-cursor mission to design the mission which then interacts with the object in a complex fashion. To open up strategic approaches, much broader in-depth characterization of potential target objects would be highly desirable. In SSSB science missions, MASCOT-like nano-landers and instrument carriers which integrate at the instrument level to their mothership have met interest. By its size, MASCOT is compatible with small interplanetary missions. The DLR-ESTEC Gossamer Roadmap Science Working Groups' studies identified Multiple Near-Earth asteroid (NEA) Rendezvous (MNR) as one of the space science missions only feasible with solar sail propulsion. The Solar Polar Orbiter (SPO) study showed the ability to access any inclination, theDisplaced-L1 (DL1) mission operates close to Earth, where objects of interest to PD and for ISRU reside. Other studies outline the unique capability of solar sails to provide access to all SSSB, at least within the orbit of Jupiter, and significant progress has been made to explore the performance envelope of near-term solar sails for MNR. However, it is difficult for sailcraft to interact physically with a SSSB. We expand and extend the philosophy of the recently qualified DLR Gossamer solar sail deployment technology using efficient multiple sub-spacecraft integration to also include landers for one-way in-situ investigations and sample-return missions by synergetic integration and operation of sail and lander. We expect that the practical experience that can be gained from projects on extremely compressed timelines or with high-intensity operation phases on a newly explored small solar system body can contribute significantly to the study, preparation and realization of future planetary defence related missions. In Colombia and globally, census enumeration is challenging in remote regions and where armed conflict is occurring. During census preparations, the Colombian National Administrative Department of Statistics conducted social cartography workshops, where community representatives estimated numbers of dwellings and people throughout their regions. We repurposed this information, combining it with remotely sensed buildings data and other geospatial data. To estimate building counts and population sizes, we developed hierarchical Bayesian models, trained using nearby full-coverage census enumerations and assessed using 10-fold cross-validation. We compared models to assess the relative contributions of community knowledge, remotely sensed buildings, and their combination to model fit. The Community model was unbiased but imprecise; the Satellite model was more precise but biased; and the Combination model was best for overall accuracy. The big social challenges society has to cope with in future, can only be mastered, if engineers link the development and innovation process closely with the requirements of people. As a result, in the frame of the innovation process engineers have to design and develop products for diverse users. Therefore, the consideration of diversity in this process is a core competence engineers should have. Implementing the consideration of diverse requirements into product design is also linked to the development of sustainable products and thus leads to social responsible research and development, the core concept formulated by the EU. For this reason, future engineers should be educated to look at the technical perspectives of a problem embedded in the related questions within societies they are developing their artefacts for. As a result, the aim of teaching engineering should be to prepare engineers for these requirements and to draw attention to the diverse needs in a globalized world. To match the competence profiles of future engineers to the global challenges and the resulting social responsibility, RWTH Aachen University, one of the leading technical universities in Germany, has established the bridging professorship "Gender and Diversity in Engineering" (GDI) which educates engineers with an interdisciplinary approach to expand engineering limits. The interdisciplinary teaching concept of the research group pursues an approach which imparts an application oriented Gender and Diversity expertise to future engineers. In the frame of an established teaching concept, which is a result of experiences and expertise of the research group, students gain theoretical knowledge about Gender and Diversity and learn how to transfer their knowledge into their later field of action. The conducted research found that the state's dependence on its citizens decreases when the state's sources of revenue are largely detached and independent of the citizens' financial resources. In this case, financial resources are taxes and duties provided by the citizens. One possible consequence is the restriction of state investment in its citizens. Both the qualitative literature review and the quantitative data analysis revealed a negative correlation between socio-economic development and the resource economy's share of GDP for the period under study. The microeconomic investigation was primarily conducted through an intensive literature review. It was shown that the rebound effect as such is already very well researched. However, it also became clear that avoidance strategies for the rebound effect and links to sustainability initiatives are scarce or non-existent. The need for a redesign of the impact analysis with regard to technological innovations and their influence on resource consumption and resource management has become clear on the basis of the present study. Further, emerging and developing countries in particular, which will be confronted in the foreseeable future not only with the fundamental problems of resource abundance in the overall economic context, but also with the issues of their sustainable use, should be confronted with these problems as early as possible in order to find solutions in a timely manner.}, language = {de} } @article{VoegeleRuebbelkeGovorukhaetal.2019, author = {V{\"o}gele, Stefan and R{\"u}bbelke, Dirk and Govorukha, Kristina and Grajewski, Matthias}, title = {Socio-technical scenarios for energy-intensive industries: the future of steel production in Germany}, series = {Climatic Change}, journal = {Climatic Change}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Berlin}, issn = {0165-0009}, doi = {10.1007/s10584-019-02366-0}, pages = {1 -- 16}, year = {2019}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{GaldiHartungDugelay2019, author = {Galdi, Chiara and Hartung, Frank and Dugelay, Jean-Luc}, title = {Socrates: A database of realistic data for source camera recognition on smartphones}, series = {Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods - Volume 1: ICPRAM}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods - Volume 1: ICPRAM}, isbn = {978-989-758-351-3}, doi = {10.5220/0007403706480655}, pages = {648 -- 655}, year = {2019}, language = {en} } @article{StaatBaroudTopcuetal.2008, author = {Staat, Manfred and Baroud, Gamal and Topcu, M. and Sponagel, Stefan}, title = {Soft Materials in Technology and Biology - Characteristics, Properties, and Parameter Identification}, series = {Bioengineering in Cell and Tissue Research / Artmann, Gerhard M. ; Chien, Shu (Eds.)}, journal = {Bioengineering in Cell and Tissue Research / Artmann, Gerhard M. ; Chien, Shu (Eds.)}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Berlin}, isbn = {978-3-540-75408-4}, pages = {253 -- 315}, year = {2008}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{SchreiberHirtbachKraftetal.2013, author = {Schreiber, Marc and Hirtbach, Stefan and Kraft, Bodo and Steinmetzler, Andreas}, title = {Software in the city: visual guidance through large scale software projects}, series = {Software Engineering 2013 : Fachtagung des GI-Fachbereichs Softwaretechnik, 26. This results in a practical method for describing the dynamic fluid pressure on the tank shell during joint movement. The fluid pressure is calculated on the basis of the tank's eigenform and the earthquake acceleration and represented by additional masses on the shell. The bearing on compliant ground is represented by replacement springs, which are calculated dependent on the local soil composition. The influence of the shear modulus of the compliant soil is clearly visible in the pressure curves and the stress distribution in the shell. The acceleration spectra are also dependent on soil stiffness. According to Eurocode-8 the acceleration spectra are determined for fixed soil-classes, instead of calculating the accelerations for each site in direct dependence on the soil composition. This leads to unrealistic sudden changes in the system's response. Therefore, earthquake spectra are calculated for different soil models in direct dependence of the shear modulus. Thus, both the acceleration spectra and the replacement springs match the soil composition. Classical heliostat design is dominated by mirrors brought into position by steel structures and drives that guarantee high accuracies under wind loads and thermal stress situations. A large fraction of costs is caused by the stiffness requirements of the steel structure, typically resulting in ~ 20 kg/m² steel per mirror area. The typical cost figure of heliostats (figure mentioned by Solucar at Solar Paces Conference, Seville, 2006) is currently in the area of 150 €/m² caused by the increasing price of the necessary raw materials. An interesting option to reduce costs lies in a heliostat design where all moving parts are protected from wind loads. In this way, drives and mechanical layout may be kept less robust, thereby reducing material input and costs. In order to keep the heliostat at an appropriate size, small mirrors (around 10x10 cm²) have to be used, which are placed in a box with a transparent cover. Innovative drive systems are developed in order to obtain a cost-effective design. A 0,5x0,5 m² demonstration unit will be constructed. Tests of the unit are carried out with a high-precision artificial sun unit that imitates the sun's path with an accuracy of less than 0.5 mrad and creates a beam of parallel light with a divergence of less than 4 mrad.}, language = {en} } @article{GoettscheHoffschmidtSchmitzetal.2009, author = {G{\"o}ttsche, Joachim and Hoffschmidt, Bernhard and Schmitz, Stefan and Sauerborn, Markus}, title = {Solar Concentrating Systems Using Small Mirror Arrays / G{\"o}ttsche, Joachim ; Hoffschmidt, Bernhard ; Schmitz, Stefan ; Sauerborn, Markus ; Buck, Reiner ; Teufel, Edgar ; Badst{\"u}bner, Karin ; Ifland, David ; Rebholz, Christian}, series = {Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Energy Sustainability - 2008 : : presented ... This chapter covers their orbital and attitude dynamics and control. First, the advantages and limitations of solar sails are discussed and their history and development status is outlined. Because the dynamics of solar sails is governed by the (thermo-)optical properties of the sail film, the basic solar radiation pressure force models have to be described and compared before parameters to measure solar sail performance can be defined. The next part covers the orbital dynamics of solar sails for heliocentric motion, planetocentric motion, and motion at Lagrangian equilibrium points. Afterwards, some advanced solar radiation pressure force models are described, which allow to quantify the thrust force on solar sails of arbitrary shape, the effects of temperature, of light incidence angle, of surface roughness, and the effects of optical degradation of the sail film in the space environment. The orbital motion of a solar sail is strongly coupled to its rotational motion, so that the attitude control of these soft and flexible structures is very challenging, especially for planetocentric orbits that require fast attitude maneuvers. Finally, some potential attitude control methods are sketched and selection criteria are given.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{DachwaldKahleWie2006, author = {Dachwald, Bernd and Kahle, Ralph and Wie, Bong}, title = {Solar sail Kinetic Energy Impactor (KEI) mission design tradeoffs for impacting and deflecting asteroid 99942 Apophis}, series = {AIAA/AAS Astrodynamics Specialist Conference and Exhibit}, booktitle = {AIAA/AAS Astrodynamics Specialist Conference and Exhibit}, doi = {10.2514/6.2006-6178}, pages = {1 -- 20}, year = {2006}, abstract = {Near-Earth asteroid 99942 Apophis provides a typical example for the evolution of asteroid orbits that lead to Earth-impacts after a close Earth-encounter that results in a resonant return. Apophis will have a close Earth-encounter in 2029 with potential very close subsequent Earth-encounters (or even an impact) in 2036 or later, depending on whether it passes through one of several so-called gravitational keyholes during its 2029-encounter. Several pre-2029-deflection scenarios to prevent Apophis from doing this have been investigated so far. Because the keyholes are less than 1 km in size, a pre-2029 kinetic impact is clearly the best option because it requires only a small change in Apophis' orbit to nudge it out of a keyhole. A single solar sail Kinetic Energy Impactor (KEI) spacecraft that impacts Apophis from a retrograde trajectory with a very high relative velocity (75-80 km/s) during one of its perihelion passages at about 0.75 AU would be a feasible option to do this. The spacecraft consists of a 160 m x 160 m, 168 kg solar sail assembly and a 150 kg impactor. Although conventional spacecraft can also achieve the required minimum deflection of 1 km for this approx. 320 m-sized object from a prograde trajectory, our solar sail KEI concept also allows the deflection of larger objects. In this paper, we also show that, even after Apophis has flown through one of the gravitational keyholes in 2029, solar sail Kinetic Energy Impactor (KEI) spacecraft are still a feasible option to prevent Apophis from impacting the Earth, but many KEIs would be required for consecutive impacts to increase the total Earth-miss distance to a safe value. In this paper, we elaborate potential pre- and post-2029 KEI impact scenarios for a launch in 2020, and investigate tradeoffs between different mission parameters.}, language = {en} } @article{DachwaldWi2007, author = {Dachwald, Bernd and Wi, Bong}, title = {Solar Sail Kinetic Energy Impactor Trajectory Optimization for an Asteroid-Deflection Mission}, series = {Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets. 44 (2007), H. 4}, journal = {Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets. 44 (2007), H. 4}, isbn = {0022-4650}, pages = {755 -- 764}, year = {2007}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{Dachwald2004, author = {Dachwald, Bernd}, title = {Solar sail performance requirements for missions to the outer solar system and beyond}, series = {55th International Astronautical Congress 2004}, booktitle = {55th International Astronautical Congress 2004}, doi = {10.2514/6.IAC-04-S.P.11}, pages = {1 -- 9}, year = {2004}, abstract = {Solar sails enable missions to the outer solar system and beyond, although the solar radiation pressure decreases with the square of solar distance. For such missions, the solar sail may gain a large amount of energy by first making one or more close approaches to the sun.
