Based on this, it delivers proposals if and when to drain and refill the receiver during a cloudy period in order maximize the net yield and quantifies the amount of net electricity gained by this. By intelligently combining Photovoltaics (PV) systems with CSP, a further cost reduction of solar power plants is expected, as well as an increase in dispatchability and flexibility of power generation. PV-powered Resistance Heaters (RH) can be deployed to raise the temperature of the molten salt hot storage from 385 °C up to 565 °C in a Parabolic Trough Collector (PTC) plant. To avoid freezing and decomposition of molten salt, the temperature distribution in the electrical resistance heater is investigated in the present study. For this purpose, a RH has been modeled and CFD simulations have been performed. The simulation results show that the hottest regions occur on the electric rod surface behind the last baffle. A technical optimization was performed by adjusting three parameters: Shell-baffle clearance, electric rod-baffle clearance and number of baffles. After the technical optimization was carried out, the temperature difference between the maximum temperature and the average outlet temperature of the salt is within the acceptable limits, thus critical salt decomposition has been avoided. In 2016, AlphaGo, an MCTS-based software agent, outperformed the human world champion of the board game Go. This game was for long considered almost infeasible for machines, due to its immense search space and the need for a long-term strategy. Since this historical success, MCTS is considered as an effective new approach for many other scientific and technical problems. Interestingly, civil structural engineering, as a discipline, offers many tasks whose solution may benefit from intelligent search and in particular from adopting MCTS as a search tool. In this work, we show how MCTS can be adapted to search for suitable solutions of a structural engineering design problem. The problem consists of choosing the load-bearing elements in a reference reinforced concrete structure, so to achieve a set of specific dynamic characteristics. In the paper, we report the results obtained by applying both a plain and a hybrid version of single-agent MCTS. The hybrid approach consists of an integration of both MCTS and classic Genetic Algorithm (GA), the latter also serving as a term of comparison for the results. However, in complex structures such as nuclear power plants, the safety or the risk depends also on the components associated with a system. The classical fault tree analysis gives an overall view of the failure and contains several subsystems to the main event, however, the interactions in the subsystems are not well represented. In order to represent the interaction of the components, a method suggested by Cimellaro et al. (2006) using multidimensional performance limit state functions to obtain the system fragility curves is adopted. This approach gives the possibility of deriving the cumulative fragility taking into account the interaction of the response of different components. In this paper, this approach is used to evaluate seismic risk of a representative electrical building infrastructure, including the component, of a nuclear power plant. A simplified model of the structure, with nonlinear material behavior is employed for the analysis in Abaqus©. The input variables considered are the material parameters, boundary conditions and the seismic input. The variability of the seismic input is obtained from selected ground motion time histories of spectrum compatible synthetic ccelerograms. They show a thermal optimal circular ring width of nearly zero. Hydraulically optimal is an inner to outer pipe radius ratio of 0.65 for turbulent and 0.68 for laminar fow types. In contrast, in this study, fow conditions in the circular ring are kept constant (a set of fxed Reynolds numbers) during optimization. This approach ensures fxed fow conditions and prevents inappropriately high or low mass fow rates. The optimization is carried out for three objectives: Maximum energy gain, minimum hydraulic efort and eventually optimum net-exergy balance. The optimization changes the inner pipe radius and mass fow rate but not the Reynolds number of the circular ring. The thermal calculations base on Hellstr{\"o}m's borehole resistance and the hydraulic optimization on individually calculated linear loss of head coefcients. Increasing the inner pipe radius results in decreased hydraulic losses in the inner pipe but increased losses in the circular ring. The net-exergy diference is a key performance indicator and combines thermal and hydraulic calculations. It is the difference between thermal exergy fux and hydraulic efort. The Reynolds number in the circular ring is instead of the mass fow rate constant during all optimizations. The result from a thermal perspective is an optimal width of the circular ring of nearly zero. The hydraulically optimal inner pipe radius is 54\% of the outer pipe radius for laminar fow and 60\% for turbulent fow scenarios. Net-exergetic optimization shows a predominant infuence of hydraulic losses, especially for small temperature gains. The exact result depends on the earth's thermal properties and the fow type. Conclusively, coaxial geothermal probes' design should focus on the hydraulic optimum and take the thermal optimum as a secondary criterion due to the dominating hydraulics.}, language = {en} } @book{MeskourisButenweg2005, author = {Meskouris, Konstantin and Butenweg, Christoph}, title = {Neubewertung der Erdbebensicherheit von Talsperren in Deutschland : DGEB-Workshop, 28. With this proviso, the situation can be provisionally summarised as follows: The total potential of known geothermal steam sources is only 64 GW. Geothermal energy could therefore only make a significant contribution to covering the worldwide power needs if we succeed in exploiting dry geothermal reservoirs. Exploitation of tidal energy is limited to a few geographically favourable locations. The power generation potential at these locations is only about 64 GW. An important drawback of tidal power is discontinuous power generation. Large scale exploitation of wind, wave and glacier energy, and of ocean heat, requires solution of a number of technological problems. The environmental effects of exploitation of these energy resources are to some extent of a qualitatively different nature from those of operation of fossil-fuel-fired and of nuclear power plants. The scanty knowledge in this area often results in these effects being underestimated. In any case, however, it would be deliberately misleading to postulate that any form of power generation is possible without some detrimental effects on the environment. It may be stated in conclusion that, owing to their small potential or to the as yet insufficiently advanced technological development, none of the energy resources discussed in this paper can make a significant contribution to the solution of middle-term energy supply problems, i.e., to a rapid replacement of mineral oil and natural gas.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{ButenwegNorda2013, author = {Butenweg, Christoph and Norda, Hannah}, title = {Nonlinear analysis of masonry structures according to Eurocode 8}, series = {Proceedings - Vienna Congress on Recent Advances in Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics 2013 (VEESD 2013)}, booktitle = {Proceedings - Vienna Congress on Recent Advances in Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics 2013 (VEESD 2013)}, editor = {Adam, Christoph and Heuer, Rudolf and Lenhardt, Wolfgang and Schranz, Christian}, isbn = {978-3-902749-04-8}, year = {2013}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{GellertNordaButenweg2008, author = {Gellert, Christoph and Norda, Hannah and Butenweg, Christoph}, title = {Nonlinear behaviour of masonry under cyclic loading}, series = {7th European Conference on Structural Dynamics, EURODYN 2008 : 7-9 July 2008, Southampton}, booktitle = {7th European Conference on Structural Dynamics, EURODYN 2008 : 7-9 July 2008, Southampton}, organization = {European Conference on Structural Dynamics, EURODYN <7, 2008, Southampton>}, pages = {1 -- 12}, year = {2008}, language = {en} } @article{FoersterKiesslichWackeretal.2003, author = {F{\"o}rster, Arnold and Kiesslich, G. and Wacker, A. and Scholl, E.}, title = {Nonlinear charging effect of quantum dots in a p-i-n diode. The result of this interaction is significant damage to the infill wall and sometimes to the surrounding structural system too. In most design codes, infill walls are considered as non-structural elements and neglected in the design process, because taking into account the infills and considering the interaction between frame and infill in software packages can be complicated and impractical. A good way to avoid negative aspects arising from this behavior is to ensure no or low-interaction of the frame and infill wall, for instance by decoupling the infill from the frame. This paper presents the numerical study performed to investigate new connection system called INODIS (Innovative Decoupled Infill System) for decoupling infill walls from surrounding frame with the aim to postpone infill activation to high interstory drifts thus reducing infill/frame interaction and minimizing damage to both infills and frames. The experimental results are first used for calibration and validation of the numerical model, which is then employed for investigating the influence of the material parameters as well as infill's and frame's geometry on the in-plane behaviour of the infilled frames with the INODIS system. For all the investigated situations, simulation results show significant improvements in behaviour for decoupled infilled RC frames in comparison to the traditionally infilled frames.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{GiresiniButenwegAndreinietal.2014, author = {Giresini, Linda and Butenweg, Christoph and Andreini, M. and De Falco, A. and Sassu, M.}, title = {Numerical calibration of a macro-element for vaultes system in historic churches}, series = {9th International Conference on Structural Analyses of Historical Conctruction, 14 - 17 October, 2014, Mexico City}, booktitle = {9th International Conference on Structural Analyses of Historical Conctruction, 14 - 17 October, 2014, Mexico City}, organization = {International Conference on Structural Analyses of Historical Conctructions <9, 2014, Mexico City>}, pages = {1 -- 12}, year = {2014}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{TaddeiReindlParketal.2011, author = {Taddei, Francesca and Reindl, Lukas and Park, Jin and Butenweg, Christoph and Karadogan, Faruk}, title = {Numerical investigation of AAC wall panels based on the damage plasticity constitutive law}, series = {Cement, Wapno, Beton ; 2011, 7, Special issue: 5th International Conference on Autoclaved Aerated Concrete 'Securing a sustainable future' to be held at Bydgoszcz to celebrate 60 years of AAC experience in Poland, Bydgoszcz, September 14-17, 2011}, booktitle = {Cement, Wapno, Beton ; 2011, 7, Special issue: 5th International Conference on Autoclaved Aerated Concrete 'Securing a sustainable future' to be held at Bydgoszcz to celebrate 60 years of AAC experience in Poland, Bydgoszcz, September 14-17, 2011}, publisher = {Stowarzyszenie Producent{\´o}w Cementu i Wapna}, address = {Krakow}, organization = {International Conference on Autoclaved Aerated Concrete 'Securing a sustainable future' <5, 2011, Bydgoszcz>}, issn = {1425-8129}, pages = {86 -- 91}, year = {2011}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{KubalskiMarinkovićButenweg2016, author = {Kubalski, T. and Marinković, Marko and Butenweg, Christoph}, title = {Numerical investigation of masonry infilled R.C. frames}, series = {Brick and Block Masonry. This term is special, because it is non-linear and furthermore depends on a time derivative. In our approach we reformulated this as a new problem for the usual heat equation, without source term but with a new non-linear coefficient. We gave an existence and uniqueness proof for the weak solution of the reformulated problem. To obtain a numerical solution, we developed a semi-implicit and a fully implicit finite volume method. We compared these two methods theoretically as well as numerically. Finally, as practical application, we simulated the heat conduction in coated aluminum fibers with adsorption in the zeolite coating. Although infills are considered as non-structural elements, they significantly change dynamic characteristics of RC frame structures during earthquake excitation. Recently, significant effort was spent on studying decoupled infills, which are isolated from the surrounding frame usually by adding a gap between frame and infill. In this case, the frame deformation does not activate infill wall, thus infills are not influencing the behaviour of the frame. This paper presents the results of the investigation of the behaviour of RC frame buildings with the INODIS system that decouples masonry infills from the surrounding frame. Effect of masonry infill decoupling was investigated first on the one-bay onestorey frame. This was used as a base for parametric study on the frames with more bays and storeys, as well as on the building level. Change of stiffness and dynamic characteristics was analysed as well as response under earthquake loading. Comparison with the bare frame and traditionally infilled frame was performed. The results show that behaviour of the decoupled infilled frames is similar to the bare frame, whereas behaviour of frames with traditional infills is significantly different and demands complex numerical models.
