The control behavior of an RL controller is compared to that of traditional LQR and MPC controllers. This is done by evaluating their behavior under optimal conditions, their disturbance behavior, their robustness and their development process. All the investigated controllers are developed using MATLAB and the Simulink simulation environment and later deployed to a real pendulum model powered by a Raspberry Pi. The RL algorithm used is Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). The LQR controller exhibits an easy development process, an average to good control behavior and average to good robustness. A linear MPC controller could show excellent results under optimal operating conditions. However, when subjected to disturbances or deviations from the equilibrium point, it showed poor performance and sometimes instable behavior. Employing a nonlinear MPC Controller in real time was not possible due to the high computational effort involved. The RL controller exhibits by far the most versatile and robust control behavior. When operated in the simulation environment, it achieved a high control accuracy. When employed in the real system, however, it only shows average accuracy and a significantly greater performance loss compared to the simulation than the traditional controllers. With MATLAB, it is not yet possible to directly post-train the RL controller on the Raspberry Pi, which is an obstacle to the practical application of RL in a prototyping or teaching setting. Nevertheless, RL in general proves to be a flexible and powerful control method, which is well suited for complex or nonlinear systems where traditional controllers struggle.}, language = {en} } @article{FassbenderBuehler1999, author = {Faßbender, Heinz and B{\"u}hler, Gerhard}, title = {Applying Ada, Java and CORBA for making a command and control information system platform independent}, series = {Proceedings : (SIGAda '99) ; October 17 - 21, 1999 ; Crowne Plaza, Redondo Beach \& Marine Hotel, Redondo Beach, CA, USA / ACM SIGAda Annual International Conference}, journal = {Proceedings : (SIGAda '99) ; October 17 - 21, 1999 ; Crowne Plaza, Redondo Beach \& Marine Hotel, Redondo Beach, CA, USA / ACM SIGAda Annual International Conference}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York, NY}, isbn = {1-58113-127-5}, pages = {83 -- 88}, year = {1999}, language = {en} } @incollection{EggertZaehlWolfetal.2023, author = {Eggert, Mathias and Z{\"a}hl, Philipp M. and Wolf, Martin R. and Haase, Martin}, title = {Applying leaderboards for quality improvement in software development projects}, series = {Software Engineering for Games in Serious Contexts}, booktitle = {Software Engineering for Games in Serious Contexts}, editor = {Cooper, Kendra M.L. and Bucchiarone, Antonio}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Cham}, isbn = {978-3-031-33337-8 (Print)}, doi = {10.1007/978-3-031-33338-5_11}, pages = {243 -- 263}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Software development projects often fail because of insufficient code quality. It is now well documented that the task of testing software, for example, is perceived as uninteresting and rather boring, leading to poor software quality and major challenges to software development companies. One promising approach to increase the motivation for considering software quality is the use of gamification. Initial research works already investigated the effects of gamification on software developers and come to promising. Nevertheless, a lack of results from field experiments exists, which motivates the chapter at hand. By conducting a gamification experiment with five student software projects and by interviewing the project members, the chapter provides insights into the changing programming behavior of information systems students when confronted with a leaderboard. In domestic settings for service robots complex tasks have to be accomplished. Those tasks benefit from deliberation, from robust action execution and from flexible methods for human-robot interaction that account for qualitative notions used in natural language as well as human fallibility. Our robot CAESAR deploys AI techniques on several levels of its system architecture. On the low-level side, system modules for localization or navigation make, for instance, use of path-planning methods, heuristic search, and Bayesian filters. For face recognition and human-machine interaction, random trees and well-known methods from natural language processing are deployed. For deliberation, we use the robot programming and plan language READYLOG, which was developed for the high-level control of agents and robots; it allows combining programming the behaviour using planning to find a course of action. READYLOG is a variant of the robot programming language Golog. We extended READYLOG to be able to cope with qualitative notions of space frequently used by humans, such as "near" and "far". This facilitates human-robot interaction by bridging the gap between human natural language and the numerical values needed by the robot. Further, we use READYLOG to increase the flexible interpretation of human commands with decision-theoretic planning. Compared with other electrodeless lamp systems, no cavity has to be used and a reduction in the input power is achieved. Therefore, this lamp is an alternative to the halogen incandescent lamp for domestic lighting. To serve the demands of domestic lighting, the filling of the lamp is optimized over all other resulting requirements, such as high efficacy at low induced powers and fast startups. A workflow to develop RF-driven plasma applications is presented, which makes use of the hot S-parameter technique. Descriptions of the fitting process inside a circuit and FEM simulator are given. Although the feasibility of automated alignment of laser optics has been shown in research labs, the development effort for the automation of assembly does not meet economic requirements - especially for low-volume laser production. This paper presents a model-based and sensor-integrated assembly execution approach for flexible assembly cells consisting of a macro-positioner covering a large workspace and a compact micromanipulator with camera attached to the positioner. In order to make full use of available models from computer-aided design (CAD) and optical simulation, sensor systems at different levels of accuracy are used for matching perceived information with model data. This approach is named "chain of refined perception", and it allows for automated planning of complex assembly tasks along all major phases of assembly such as collision-free path planning, part feeding, and active and passive alignment. The focus of the paper is put on the in-process image-based metrology and information extraction used for identifying and calibrating local coordinate systems as well as the exploitation of that information for a part feeding process for micro-optics. Results will be presented regarding the processes of automated calibration of the robot camera as well as the local coordinate systems of part feeding area and robot base.}, language = {en} } @article{SerrorHackHenzeetal.2021, author = {Serror, Martin and Hack, Sacha and Henze, Martin and Schuba, Marko and Wehrle, Klaus}, title = {Challenges and Opportunities in Securing the Industrial Internet of Things}, series = {IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics}, volume = {17}, journal = {IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics}, number = {5}, publisher = {IEEE}, address = {New York}, issn = {1941-0050}, doi = {10.1109/TII.2020.3023507}, pages = {2985 -- 2996}, year = {2021}, language = {en} } @article{SchollAachDesernoetal.2011, author = {Scholl, Ingrid and Aach, Til and Deserno, Thomas M. and Kuhlen, Torsten}, title = {Challenges of medical image processing}, series = {Computer Science - Research and Development}, volume = {26}, journal = {Computer Science - Research and Development}, number = {1-2}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Berlin}, isbn = {1865-2042}, pages = {5 -- 13}, year = {2011}, language = {en} } @article{HoltrupSadeghfamHeuermannetal.2014, author = {Holtrup, S. and Sadeghfam, Arash and Heuermann, Holger and Awakowicz, P.}, title = {Characterization and optimization technique for microwave-driven high-intensity discharge lamps using hot S-parameters}, series = {IEEE transactions on microwave theories and techniques}, volume = {62}, journal = {IEEE transactions on microwave theories and techniques}, number = {10}, publisher = {IEEE}, address = {New York}, issn = {0018-9480}, doi = {10.1109/TMTT.2014.2342652}, pages = {2471 -- 2480}, year = {2014}, abstract = {High-intensity discharge lamps can be driven by radio-frequency signals in the ISM frequency band at 2.45 GHz, using a matching network to transform the impedance of the plasma to the source impedance. To achieve an optimal operating condition, a good characterization of the lamp in terms of radio frequency equivalent circuits under operating conditions is necessary, enabling the design of an efficient matching network. This paper presents the characterization technique for such lamps and presents the design of the required matching network. For the characterization, a high-intensity discharge lamp was driven by a monofrequent large signal at 2.45 GHz, whereas a frequency sweep over 300 MHz was performed across this signal to measure so-called small-signal hot S-parameters using a vector network analyzer. These parameters are then used as an equivalent load in a circuit simulator to design an appropriate matching network. Using the measured data as a black-box model in the simulation results in a quick and efficient method to simulate and design efficient matching networks in spite of the complex plasma behavior. Furthermore, photometric analysis of high-intensity discharge lamps are carried out, comparing microwave operation to conventional operation.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{BuxbaumSchwarteXuetal.1999, author = {Buxbaum, Bernd and Schwarte, Rudolf and Xu, Zhanping and Ringbeck, Thorsten and [u.a.],}, title = {Charge Transfer Simulation in PMD-Structures}, series = {Sensor 99 : proceedings / 9th Int'l Fair and Conference for Sensors, Transducers \& Systems, May 18 - 20, 1999, Exhibition Centre N{\"u}rnberg/Germany. - Vol. 2}, booktitle = {Sensor 99 : proceedings / 9th Int'l Fair and Conference for Sensors, Transducers \& Systems, May 18 - 20, 1999, Exhibition Centre N{\"u}rnberg/Germany. - Vol. 2}, publisher = {AMA Service GmbH}, address = {Wunsdorf}, pages = {427 -- 432}, year = {1999}, language = {en} } @article{PrumeTyholdtCalameetal.2007, author = {Prume, Klaus and Tyholdt, F. and Calame, F. and Raeder, H.}, title = {Chemically derived seeding layer for {100}-textured PZT thin films / Tyholdt, F. ; Calame, F. ; Prume, K. ; Raeder, H. ; Muralt, P.}, series = {Journal of Electroceramics. 19 (2007), H. 4}, journal = {Journal of Electroceramics. 19 (2007), H. 4}, isbn = {1385-3449}, pages = {311 -- 314}, year = {2007}, language = {en} } @article{SiepmannRupietta1993, author = {Siepmann, Thomas and Rupietta, D.}, title = {Closer to the customer with computerized product support}, series = {Technische Mitteilungen Krupp (1993)}, journal = {Technische Mitteilungen Krupp (1993)}, address = {Essen}, year = {1993}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{DeyElsenFerreinetal.2021, author = {Dey, Thomas and Elsen, Ingo and Ferrein, Alexander and Frauenrath, Tobias and Reke, Michael and Schiffer, Stefan}, title = {CO2 Meter: a do-it-yourself carbon dioxide measuring device for the classroom}, series = {PETRA 2021: The 14th PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments Conference}, booktitle = {PETRA 2021: The 14th PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments Conference}, editor = {Makedon, Fillia}, publisher = {Association for Computing Machinery}, address = {New York}, isbn = {9781450387927}, doi = {10.1145/3453892.3462697}, pages = {292 -- 299}, year = {2021}, abstract = {In this paper we report on CO2 Meter, a do-it-yourself carbon dioxide measuring device for the classroom. Part of the current measures for dealing with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is proper ventilation in indoor settings. This is especially important in schools with students coming back to the classroom even with high incidents rates. Static ventilation patterns do not consider the individual situation for a particular class. Influencing factors like the type of activity, the physical structure or the room occupancy are not incorporated. Also, existing devices are rather expensive and often provide only limited information and only locally without any networking. This leaves the potential of analysing the situation across different settings untapped. Carbon dioxide level can be used as an indicator of air quality, in general, and of aerosol load in particular. Since, according to the latest findings, SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted primarily in the form of aerosols, carbon dioxide may be used as a proxy for the risk of a virus infection. Hence, schools could improve the indoor air quality and potentially reduce the infection risk if they actually had measuring devices available in the classroom. Our device supports schools in ventilation and it allows for collecting data over the Internet to enable a detailed data analysis and model generation. First deployments in schools at different levels were received very positively. One key part within optimization models for electric powertrains is the efficiency map of the electric motor. Materials and methods The study group comprised five patients who were intra-individually examined with 3 and 7 T MRI preoperatively and postoperatively (within 72 h/3 months) after implantation of CFPs. Acquired sequences included T₁-weighted magnetization-prepared rapid-acquisition gradient-echo (MPRAGE), T₂-weighted turbo-spin-echo (TSE) imaging, and susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI). Two experienced neurosurgeons and a neuroradiologist rated image quality and the presence of artifacts in consensus reading. Results Minor artifacts occurred around the CFPs in MPRAGE and T2 TSE at both field strengths, with no significant differences between 3 and 7 T. In SWI, artifacts were accentuated in the early postoperative scans at both field strengths due to intracranial air and hemorrhagic remnants. After resorption, the brain tissue directly adjacent to skull bone could still be assessed. Image quality after 3 months was equal to the preoperative examinations at 3 and 7 T. Conclusion Image quality after CFP implantation was not significantly impaired in 7 T MRI, and artifacts were comparable to those in 3 T MRI.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{AlhwarinFerreinScholl2018, author = {Alhwarin, Faraj and Ferrein, Alexander and Scholl, Ingrid}, title = {CRVM: Circular Random Variable-based Matcher - A Novel Hashing Method for Fast NN Search in High-dimensional Spaces}, series = {Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods, ICPRAM 2018}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods, ICPRAM 2018}, isbn = {978-989-758-276-9}, doi = {10.5220/0006692802140221}, pages = {214 -- 221}, year = {2018}, language = {en} } @article{Benkner1996, author = {Benkner, Thorsten}, title = {CS+: A Novel Self-Adaptive Slot Assignment Scheme for ATDMA}, series = {Mobile technology for the human race / 1996 IEEE 46th Vehicular Technology Conference, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, April 28 - May 1, 1996}, journal = {Mobile technology for the human race / 1996 IEEE 46th Vehicular Technology Conference, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, April 28 - May 1, 1996}, publisher = {IEEE Service Center}, address = {Piscataway, NY}, isbn = {0-7803-3158-3}, year = {1996}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{StephanHeuermannPrantner2016, author = {Stephan, Achim and Heuermann, Holger and Prantner, Michael}, title = {Cutting human tissue with novel atmospheric-pressure microwave plasma jet}, series = {46th European Microwave Conference (EuMC)}, booktitle = {46th European Microwave Conference (EuMC)}, publisher = {IEEE}, isbn = {978-2-87487-043-9}, doi = {10.1109/EuMC.2016.7824490}, pages = {902 -- 905}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @article{HagemannBachmannLadeetal.1994, author = {Hagemann, Hans-J{\"u}rgen and Bachmann, P.K. and Lade, H. and Leers, D.}, title = {CVD Diamond Growth: Gas Compositions and Film Properties / P.K. Increasing their autonomy has been declared an explicit goal, for example, as part of the Industry 4.0 vision. To achieve this system intelligence, principled and software-driven methods are required to analyze sensing data, make goal-directed decisions, and eventually execute and monitor chosen tasks. In this chapter, we present a number of knowledge-based approaches to these problems and case studies with in-depth evaluation results of several different implementations for groups of autonomous mobile robots performing in-house logistics in a smart factory. Often, in decision-theoretic planning, it is cumbersome to specify the set of values to pick from in the non-deterministic-choice-of-argument statement. Also, even for domain experts, it is not always easy to specify a reward function. Instead of providing a finite domain for values in the non-deterministic-choice-of-argument statement in Golog, we now allow for stating the argument domain by simply providing a formula over linguistic terms and fuzzy uents. In Golog's forward-search DT planning algorithm, these formulas are evaluated in order to find the agent's optimal policy. Transition of control and potential minimum risk manoeuvres are currently research topics and will bridge the gap until full autonomous vehicles are available. The authors showed in a demonstration that the transition of control mechanisms can be further improved by usage of communication technology. Receiving the incident type and position information by usage of standardised vehicle to everything (V2X) messages can improve the driver safety and comfort level. The connected and automated vehicle's software framework can take this information to plan areas where the driver should take back control by initiating a transition of control which can be followed by a minimum risk manoeuvre in case of an unresponsive driver. Therefore, grid operators need to gradually move to active grid management in order to ensure safe and reliable grid operation. However, this requires knowledge of key grid variables, such as node voltages, which is why the mass integration of measurement technology (smart meters) is necessary. Another problem is the fact that a large part of the topology of the distribution grids is not sufficiently digitized and models are partly faulty, which means that active grid operation management today has to be carried out largely blindly. It is therefore part of current research to develop methods for determining unknown grid topologies based on measurement data.
