  abstract  = {Solar sails are large and lightweight reflective structures that are propelled by solar radiation pressure. This chapter covers their orbital and attitude dynamics and control. First, the advantages and limitations of solar sails are discussed and their history and development status is outlined. Because the dynamics of solar sails is governed by the (thermo-)optical properties of the sail film, the basic solar radiation pressure force models have to be described and compared before parameters to measure solar sail performance can be defined. The next part covers the orbital dynamics of solar sails for heliocentric motion, planetocentric motion, and motion at Lagrangian equilibrium points. Afterwards, some advanced solar radiation pressure force models are described, which allow to quantify the thrust force on solar sails of arbitrary shape, the effects of temperature, of light incidence angle, of surface roughness, and the effects of optical degradation of the sail film in the space environment. The orbital motion of a solar sail is strongly coupled to its rotational motion, so that the attitude control of these soft and flexible structures is very challenging, especially for planetocentric orbits that require fast attitude maneuvers. Finally, some potential attitude control methods are sketched and selection criteria are given.},

  abstract  = {Bacterial lipopolysaccharides (endotoxins) show strong biological effects at very low concentrations in human beings and many animals when entering the blood stream. These include affecting structure and function of organs and cells, changing metabolic functions, raising body temperature, triggering the coagulation cascade, modifying hemodynamics and causing septic shock. Because of this toxicity, the removal of even minute amounts is essential for safe parenteral administration of drugs and also for septic shock patients' care. The absence of a general method for endotoxin removal from liquid interfaces urgently requires finding new methods and materials to overcome this gap. Nanostructured carbonized plant parts is a promising material that showed good adsorption properties due to its vast pore network and high surface area. The aim of this study was comparative measurement of endotoxin- and blood proteins-related adsorption rate and adsorption capacity for different carboneous materials produced at different temperatures and under different surface modifications. As a main surface modificator, positively cbarged polymer, polyethileneimine (PEl) was used. Activated carbon materials showed good adsorption properties for LPS and some proteins used in the experiments. During the batch experiments, several techniques (dust removal, autoclaving) were used and optimized for improving the material's adsorption behavior. Also, with the results obtained it was possible to differentiate the materials according to their adsorption capacity and kinetic characteristics. Modification of the surface apparently has not affected hemoglobin binding to the adsorbent's surface. Obtained adsorption isotherms can be used as a powerful tool for designing of future column-based setups for blood purification from LPS, which is especially important for septic shock treatment.},

  abstract  = {Die Erdbebensicherheit von Geb{\"a}uden aus Kalksandsteinmauerwerk ist aktuell nach DIN 4149 mit linearen Verfahren nachzuweisen. Dies f{\"u}hrt in der praktischen Anwendung zu großen Problemen, da selbst traditionell {\"u}bliche Grundrisse teilweise nicht mehr ohne zus{\"a}tzliche Maßnahmen nachweisbar sind. Zur L{\"o}sung dieser Problematik wurden von der deutschen Mauerwerksindustrie auf nationaler und europ{\"a}ischer Ebene Forschungsprojekte initiiert, deren Ergebnisse in Form von statisch nichtlinearen Verfahren Eingang in den Nationalen Anhang zur DIN EN 1998-1 [12] gefunden haben. Mit den Verfahren wird die Nachweissituation zuk{\"u}nftig grundlegend verbessert, da mit diesen die Tragwerksreserven wesentlich besser ausgenutzt werden k{\"o}nnen. Im Folgenden wird die Anwendung der Verfahren am Beispiel einer Reihenhauszeile aus Kalksandsteinmauerwerk demonstriert. Der Nachweis der Reihenh{\"a}user wurde im Rahmen einer Zustimmung im Einzelfall, die vom Bundesverband Kalksandsteinindustrie eV in Hannover koordiniert wurde, durch unabh{\"a}ngige Gutachter und die Bauaufsicht eingehend gepr{\"u}ft und f{\"u}r richtig befunden. Die Durchf{\"u}hrung des Nachweises erfolgte auf Grundlage eines an der RWTH Aachen entwickelten neuen Nachweiskonzeptes. Die baupraktische Anwendbarkeit und einfache Nachvollziehbarkeit dieses Konzepts ist durch eine softwaretechnische Umsetzung sichergestellt.},

  abstract  = {Moderne Bauwerke m{\"u}ssen heute eine hohe energetische Leistungsf{\"a}higkeit aufweisen und gleichzeitig alle einwirkenden Lasten sicher abtragen. Dies stellt insbesondere in Erdbebengebieten hohe Anforderungen an die verwendeten Baustoffe. Am baupraktischen Beispiel einer Doppelhaush{\"a}lfte wird demonstriert, dass die Symbiose aus energieeffizientem und gleichzeitig erdbebensicherem Bauen in der h{\"o}chsten deutschen Erdbebenzone mit monolithischem Ziegelmauerwerk gut realisierbar ist. Als Ziegelmauerwerk werden f{\"u}r die Außenw{\"a}nde w{\"a}rmetechnisch optimierte Hochlochziegel verwendet, die sowohl die Anforderungen der Energieeinsparverordnung 2009 als auch die Anforderungen an Mauerwerkbaustoffe nach den aktuellen Erdbebennormen erf{\"u}llen. Der Erdbebennachweis der Doppelhaush{\"a}lfte erfolgt mit einem nichtlinearen Nachweisverfahren, das f{\"u}r eine einfache praktische Anwendung programmtechnisch umgesetzt wurde. F{\"u}r den Nachweis wurden aus zyklischen Schubwandversuchen ermittelte Last-Verformungskurven verwendet. Das gesamte in Deutschland noch nicht normativ geregelte Nachweiskonzept wurde im Rahmen einer Zustimmung im Einzelfall gepr{\"u}ft und genehmigt.},

  abstract  = {Ein viel versprechender erneuerbarer Rohstoff f{\"u}r die Produktion von Chemikalien und Treibstoffen ist Lignocellulose aus pflanzlicher Biomasse. Die darin enthaltenen Zucker k{\"o}nnen mittels enzymatischer Hydrolyse freigesetzt und fermentativ zu Ethanol umgesetzt werden. Ein interessanter Ansatz ist dabei die simultane Verzuckerung und Fermentation. Hefen und Enzyme haben mit 30 °C bzw. 50 °C zwar unterschiedliche Temperaturoptima, es konnte aber gezeigt werden, dass auch bei den niedrigeren Temperaturen eine Umsetzung der Cellulose zu Glucose erfolgt, wenn auch langsamer als bei optimalen Bedingungen. Außerdem konnte in Vorversuchen gezeigt werden, dass Ethanol in den zu erwartenden Konzentrationen keinen Einfluss auf die enzymatische Umsetzung hat.},

  abstract  = {Objectives Interest in cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) at 7 T is motivated by the expected increase in spatial and temporal resolution, but the method is technically challenging. We examined the feasibility of cardiac chamber quantification at 7 T. Methods A stack of short axes covering the left ventricle was obtained in nine healthy male volunteers. At 1.5 T, steady-state free precession (SSFP) and fast gradient echo (FGRE) cine imaging with 7 mm slice thickness (STH) were used. At 7 T, FGRE with 7 mm and 4 mm STH were applied. End-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume, ejection fraction and mass were calculated. Results All 7 T examinations provided excellent blood/myocardium contrast for all slice directions. No significant difference was found regarding ejection fraction and cardiac volumes between SSFP at 1.5 T and FGRE at 7 T, while volumes obtained from FGRE at 1.5 T were underestimated. Cardiac mass derived from FGRE at 1.5 and 7 T was larger than obtained from SSFP at 1.5 T. Agreement of volumes and mass between SSFP at 1.5 T and FGRE improved for FGRE at 7 T when combined with an STH reduction to 4 mm. Conclusions This pilot study demonstrates that cardiac chamber quantification at 7 T using FGRE is feasible and agrees closely with SSFP at 1.5 T.},

  abstract  = {Lignine bestehen aus einem hochgradig vernetzten Polymer phenolischer Grundeinheiten. Diese Verbindungen sind eine Quelle vielversprechender chemischer Grundbausteine. Auch die enzymatische Modifikation der Materialeigenschaften des Lignins ist f{\"u}r dessen Anwendung von Interesse. Aufgrund der verschiedenen Bindungstypen im Lignin ist eine Auftrennung mit nur einem Enzym unwahrscheinlich. Vielmehr sind verschiedene mediatorgest{\"u}tzte Reaktionen notwendig. Pilze, wie z.B. T. versicolor, nutzen Enzymkombinationen zum Aufschluss des Lignins. Hierbei kommen Laccase, Ligninperoxidase und Manganperoxidase zum Einsatz. Die optimale Kombination der Enzyme und ihrer Mediatoren bzw. Stabilisatoren ist Ziel der Untersuchungen. Aufgrund der großen Parameteranzahl wurde ein genetischer Algorithmus eingesetzt. Als Versuchsparameter wurden gew{\"a}hlt: die Verh{\"a}ltnisse der Enzyme, Ligninmasse, Konzentrationen an Eisen-, Mangan-, Oxalat-Ionen, ABTS, Violurs{\"a}ure und H₂O₂. Somit werden elf Parameter simultan optimiert. Als Algorithmus wurde ein Programm mit variabler Genkodierung entwickelt. Die Umsetzung des Lignins wird dabei {\"u}ber den verfolgt. Zurzeit ist ein enzymatischer Umsatz von 12\% m{\"o}glich. Als Referenz wurde eine chemische Lignindegradierung mit einem Umsatzvon 37\% etabliert. Die sechs Generationen des Algorithmus zeigen eine Kongruenz der Enzymkonzentrationen von LiP, MnP und VeP, w{\"a}hrend Laccase keinen Einfluss hat. Des Weiteren beeinflussen die Konzentrationen von Mangan und Oxalat die Umsetzung, w{\"a}hrend die Variation von ABTS- und H₂O₂ nur eine geringe Auswirkung hat.},

  abstract  = {In Valais, Switzerland, Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) are declining, mainly following drought. To assess the impact of drought on tree growth and survival, an irrigation experiment was initiated in 2003 in a mature pine forest, approximately doubling the annual precipitation. Tree crown transparency (lack of foliage) and leaf area index (LAI) were annually assessed. Seven irrigated and six control trees were felled in 2006, and needles, stem discs and branches were taken for growth analysis. Irrigation in 2004 and 2005, both with below-average precipitation, increased needle size, area and mass, stem growth and, with a 1-year delay, shoot length. This led to a relative decrease in tree crown transparency (-14\%) and to an increase in stand LAI (+20\%). Irrigation increased needle length by 70\%, shoot length by 100\% and ring width by 120\%, regardless of crown transparency. Crown transparency correlated positively with mean needle size, shoot length and ring width and negatively with specific leaf area. Trees with high crown transparency (low growth, short needles) experienced similar increases in needle mass and growth with irrigation than trees with low transparency (high growth, long needles), indicating that seemingly declining trees were able to 'recover' when water supply became sufficient. A simple drought index before and during the irrigation explained most of the variation found in the parameters for both irrigated and control trees.},

  abstract  = {Background To demonstrate the applicability of acoustic cardiac triggering (ACT) for imaging of the heart at ultrahigh magnetic fields (7.0 T) by comparing phonocardiogram, conventional vector electrocardiogram (ECG) and traditional pulse oximetry (POX) triggered 2D CINE acquisitions together with (i) a qualitative image quality analysis, (ii) an assessment of the left ventricular function parameter and (iii) an examination of trigger reliability and trigger detection variance derived from the signal waveforms. Results ECG was susceptible to severe distortions at 7.0 T. POX and ACT provided waveforms free of interferences from electromagnetic fields or from magneto-hydrodynamic effects. Frequent R-wave mis-registration occurred in ECG-triggered acquisitions with a failure rate of up to 30\% resulting in cardiac motion induced artifacts. ACT and POX triggering produced images free of cardiac motion artefacts. ECG showed a severe jitter in the R-wave detection. POX also showed a trigger jitter of approximately Δt = 72 ms which is equivalent to two cardiac phases. ACT showed a jitter of approximately Δt = 5 ms only. ECG waveforms revealed a standard deviation for the cardiac trigger offset larger than that observed for ACT or POX waveforms. Image quality assessment showed that ACT substantially improved image quality as compared to ECG (image quality score at end-diastole: ECG = 1.7 ± 0.5, ACT = 2.4 ± 0.5, p = 0.04) while the comparison between ECG vs. POX gated acquisitions showed no significant differences in image quality (image quality score: ECG = 1.7 ± 0.5, POX = 2.0 ± 0.5, p = 0.34). Conclusions The applicability of acoustic triggering for cardiac CINE imaging at 7.0 T was demonstrated. ACT's trigger reliability and fidelity are superior to that of ECG and POX. ACT promises to be beneficial for cardiovascular magnetic resonance at ultra-high field strengths including 7.0 T.},

  abstract  = {• Most of the edible forest mushrooms are mycorrhizal and depend on carbohydrates produced by the associated trees. Fruiting patterns of these fungi are not yet fully understood since climatic factors alone do not completely explain mushroom occurrence. • The objective of this study was to retrospectively find out if changing tree growth following an increment thinning has influenced the diversity patterns and productivity of associated forest mushrooms in the fungus reserve La Chan{\´e}az, Switzerland. • The results reveal a clear temporal relationship between the thinning, the growth reaction of trees and the reaction of the fungal community, especially for the ectomycorrhizal species. The tree-ring width of the formerly suppressed beech trees and the fruit body number increased after thinning, leading to a significantly positive correlation between fruit body numbers and tree-ring width. • Fruit body production was influenced by previous annual tree growth, the best accordance was found between fruit body production and the tree-ring width two years previously. • The results support the hypothesis that ectomycorrhizal fruit body production must be linked with the growth of the associated host trees. Moreover, the findings indicate the importance of including mycorrhizal fungi as important players when discussing a tree as a carbon source or sink.},

Durch die Isolation im Hochgradientenmagnetseparator (HGMS) ist eine Fest-fest-fl{\"u}ssig-Trennung und somit ein erheblicher Zeitgewinn im Downstreamprozess m{\"o}glich. Zus{\"a}tzlich kommt es zur Einsparung an L{\"o}sungsmittel und Energie, was neben Reduzierung der Antibiotikahydrolyse auch in {\"o}kologischer Hinsicht einen interessanten Aspekt darstellt. Als Tr{\"a}germaterial f{\"u}r die Adsorbermatrix werden magnetisierbare Eisenoxidpartikel eingesetzt, die in einer Silikamatrix eingebettet sind. Diese Adsorber sollen auf Selektivit{\"a}t in Wasser und verschiedenen Medien getestet werden. Zus{\"a}tzlich werden die Abbauprodukte des b-Lactams analysiert, um eine Aussage {\"u}ber die Stabilisierung des Antibiotikums durch die selektiven Adsorber treffen zu k{\"o}nnen. Diese Ergebnisse werden mit kommerziell erh{\"a}ltlichen Adsorbern verglichen. Die Aufreinigung der Antibiotika soll direkt aus der Fermentationsbr{\"u}he erfolgen. Um die Trennung der magnetischen, selektiven Adsorber von der Biomasse zu gew{\"a}hrleisten, soll der HGMS in die Fermentation integriert werden. Das filament{\"o}se Wachstum des Mikroorganismus erfordert eine Neuauslegung der Filtermatrix.},

Vielmehr wurden Schw{\"a}chen in den eigenen Projekten identifiziert und verbessert. Der Erfahrungsbericht vergleicht Verbesserungen in diesen Projekten mit den Ans{\"a}tzen der agilen Entwicklung. Als Ergebnis werden folgende Punkte festgehalten: Erstens, einige Praktiken und Werte der agilen Entwicklung lassen sich auch in Großprojekten einsetzen. Zweitens, bei der Skalierung f{\"u}r Großprojekte werden diese Praktiken langsamer getaktet. Drittens, agile Entwicklung ist nicht nur eine Reihe von Praktiken und Werten, agile Entwicklung ist vielmehr auch eine Frage der Entwicklungs- und Projektkultur.   abstract  = {Objective To investigate whether functional brain networks of epilepsy patients treated with antiepileptic medication differ from networks of healthy controls even during the seizure-free interval. Methods We applied different rules to construct binary and weighted networks from EEG and MEG data recorded under a resting-state eyes-open and eyes-closed condition from 21 epilepsy patients and 23 healthy controls. The average shortest path length and the clustering coefficient served as global statistical network characteristics. Results Independent on the behavioral condition, epileptic brains exhibited a more regular functional network structure. Similarly, the eyes-closed condition was characterized by a more regular functional network structure in both groups. The amount of network reorganization due to behavioral state changes was similar in both groups. Consistent findings could be achieved for networks derived from EEG but hardly from MEG recordings, and network construction rules had a rather strong impact on our findings. Conclusions Despite the locality of the investigated processes epileptic brain networks differ in their global characteristics from non-epileptic brain networks. Further methodological developments are necessary to improve the characterization of disturbed and normal functional networks. Significance An increased regularity and a diminished modulation capability appear characteristic of epileptic brain networks.},

  abstract  = {Recently, we introduced and mathematically analysed a new method for grid deformation (Grajewski et al., 2009) [15] we call basic deformation method (BDM) here. It generalises the method proposed by Liao et al. (Bochev et al., 1996; Cai et al., 2004; Liao and Anderson, 1992) [4], [6], [20]. In this article, we employ the BDM as core of a new multilevel deformation method (MDM) which leads to vast improvements regarding robustness, accuracy and speed. We achieve this by splitting up the deformation process in a sequence of easier subproblems and by exploiting grid hierarchy. Being of optimal asymptotic complexity, we experience speed-ups up to a factor of 15 in our test cases compared to the BDM. This gives our MDM the potential for tackling large grids and time-dependent problems, where possibly the grid must be dynamically deformed once per time step according to the user's needs. Moreover, we elaborate on implementational aspects, in particular efficient grid searching, which is a key ingredient of the BDM.},

  abstract  = {Gr{\"a}ser sind in der Lage, einen großen Teil der f{\"u}r eine biobasierte Wirtschaft ben{\"o}tigten Biomasse zur Verf{\"u}gung zu stellen. Wie bei anderen lignocellulosehaltigen nachwachsenden Rohstoffen erfordert die Verwertung der im Gras enthaltenen Polysaccharide einen mehrstufigen Prozess aus Vorbehandlung, Hydrolyse und Fermentation. In Gr{\"a}sern ist die Hemicellulose mitP henolcarbons{\"a}uren wie Ferula- und p-Coumars{\"a}ure verestert, die die enzymatische Hydrolyse der Cellulose und Hemicellulose ebenso effektiv behindern wie Lignin. Anders als bei holzigen Rohstoffen erm{\"o}glicht dieser Aufbau aber eine enzymatische Vorbehandlung, mit der die Phenolcarbons{\"a}uren abgespalten werden k{\"o}nnen. Da die bei der Vorbehandlung eingesetzten Enzyme in ihrer nat{\"u}rlichen Funktion synergistisch mit cellulytischen Enzymen zusammenarbeiten, besitzen sie {\"a}hnliche Optima wie die f{\"u}r die Hydrolyse der Polysaccharide eingesetzten Cellulasen und Hemicellulasen. Diese Eigenschaft erm{\"o}glicht die Integration von Vorbehandlung und Hydrolyse in einem einzigen Verfahrensschritt. Durch die Einf{\"u}hrung der enzymatischen Vorbehandlung konnte das in der Literatur bekannte SSF-Verfahren f{\"u}r die Herstellung von Ethanol aus Gr{\"a}sern um die Vorbehandlungsstufe erweitert werden. Das so realisierte simultaneous pretreatment, saccharification and fermentation (SPSF)-Verfahren stellt eine vollst{\"a}ndige Integration der drei f{\"u}r die Nutzung von Lignocellulose n{\"o}tigen Verfahrensschritte in der gr{\"u}nen Bioraffinerie dar.},

Therefore, a four element cardiac transceive surface coil array was developed. Cardiac imaging provided clinically acceptable signal homogeneity with an excellent blood myocardium contrast. Subtle anatomic structures, such as pericardium, mitral and tricuspid valves and their apparatus, papillary muscles, and trabecles were accurately delineated.},

  abstract  = {Die am h{\"a}ufigsten genutzten Rohstoffe f{\"u}r die Produktion von Treibstoffen und Chemikalien sind fossilen Ursprungs. Da diese limitiert sind, werden im Hinblick auf die Nachhaltigkeit alternative, erneuerbare Rohstoffquellen intensiv untersucht. Vielversprechend in diesem Kontext sind die in Lignocellulose enthaltenen Zucker, die beispielsweise zur Produktion von Ethanol genutzt werden k{\"o}nnen. In der Regel sind f{\"u}r eine Lig-nocellulose-Bioraffinerie mehrere Prozessschritte notwendig: Vorbehandlung, Verzuckerung und Fermentation. Um diesen Prozess einfacher zu gestalten, ist es m{\"o}glich, die Verzuckerung und die Fermentation in einem Schritt durchzuf{\"u}hren (SSF). Als Substrat wird hier Cellulose-Faserstoff verwendet, der durch das Organosolv-Verfahren aufgeschlossen wurde. Die Hydrolyse erfolgt mit kommerziell erh{\"a}ltlichen Enzymen und f{\"u}r die Fermentation zu Ethanol werden zwei Hefen verwendet. Beim SSF-Verfahren konnte, im Vergleich zur entkoppelten Verfahrensweise, trotz bestehender Unterschiede in den Temperatur-Optima von Enzymen und Hefen eine Steigerung in der Ethanol-Ausbeute von 0,15 auf 0,2 gg⁻¹ beobachtet werden. Um wirtschaftliche Ausbeuten und Konzentrationen des Produkts erzielen zu k{\"o}nnen, ist es notwendig den Prozess weiter zu optimieren. Im Einzelfall muss {\"u}berpr{\"u}ft werden, ob diese Verfahrensweise auch f{\"u}r die Produktion anderer interessanter Stoffe (wie Itacons{\"a}ure, Bernsteins{\"a}ure) geeignet ist.},

  abstract  = {Biofuels potentially interesting also for aviation purposes are predominantly liquid fuels produced from biomass. The most common biofuels today are biodiesel and bioethanol. Since diesel engines are rather rare in aviation this survey is focusing on ethanol admixed to gasoline products. The Directive 2003/30/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of May 8th 2003 on the promotion of the use of biofuels or other renewable fuels for transport encourage a growing admixture of biogenic fuel components to fossil automotive gasoline. Some aircraft models equipped with spark ignited piston engines are approved for operation with automotive gasoline, frequently called "MOGAS" (motor gasoline). The majority of those approvals is limited to MOGAS compositions that do not contain methanol or ethanol beyond negligible amounts. In the past years (bio-)MTBE or (bio-)ETBE have been widely used as blending component of automotive gasoline whilst the usage of low-molecular alcohols like methanol or ethanol has been avoided due to the handling problems especially with regard to the strong affinity for water. With rising mandatory bio-admixtures the conversion of the basic biogenic ethanol to ETBE, causing a reduction of energetic payoff, becomes more and more unattractive. Therefore the direct ethanol admixture is accordingly favoured. Due to the national enforcements of the directive 2003/30/EC more oxygenates produced from organic materials like bioethanol have started to appear in automotive gasolines already. The current fuel specification EN 228 already allows up to 3 \% volume per volume (v/v) (bio-)methanol or up to 5 \% v/v (bio-)ethanol as fuel components. This is also roughly the amount of biogenic components to comply with the legal requirements to avoid monetary penalties for producers and distributors of fuels. Since automotive fuel is cheaper than the common aviation gasoline (AVGAS), creates less problems with lead deposits in the engine, and in general produces less pollutants it is strongly favoured by pilots. But being designed for a different set of usage scenarios the use of automotive fuel with low molecular alcohols for aircraft operation may have adverse effects in aviation operation. Increasing amounts of ethanol admixtures impose various changes in the gasoline's chemical and physical properties, some of them rather unexpected and not within the range of flight experiences even of long-term pilots.},

  abstract  = {MRI holds great potential for elucidating laryngeal and vocal fold anatomy together with the assessment of physiological processes associated in human phonation. However, MRI of human phonation remains very challenging due to the small size of the targeted structures, interfering signal from fat, air between the vocal folds and surrounding muscles and physiological motion. These anatomical/physiological constraints translate into stringent technical requirements in balancing, scan time, image contrast, immunity to physiological motion, temporal resolution and spatial resolution. Motivated by these challenges and limitations this study is aiming at translating the sensitivity gain at ultra-high magnetic fields for enhanced high spatial resolution 3D imaging of the larynx and vocal tract. To approach this goal a dedicated two channel TX/RX larynx coil is being proposed.},

  abstract  = {Molke f{\"a}llt im Rahmen der K{\"a}seherstellung allein in Deutschland in Mengen von {\"u}ber 11 Mio. Tonnen j{\"a}hrlich an. Dieses Nebenprodukt wurde trotz seines Reichtums an Milchzucker und Proteinen lange Zeit kaum industriell weiterverarbeitet und stellte ein bedeutendes Problem bei der Abwasserreinigung dar. Derzeit kommen meist kosten- und reinigungsintensive Membranfiltrationsverfahren bei der Auftrennung von Molke in ihre Hauptkomponenten Lactose und Molkenprotein zum Einsatz. Die Produkte finden vorwiegend in der Nahrungsmittelindustrie Anwendung als S{\"u}ßungsmittel, Proteinzusatz oder Texturbildner. Die Mehrheit des Proteins wird dabei als Konzentrat bzw. Proteinpulver verarbeitet. Wegen der antibakteriellen, antiviralen und weiteren wertvollen physiologischen Eigenschaften der Molkeproteine stellt eine weitere Aufreinigung der einzelnen Molkeproteine f{\"u}r die pharmazeutische Industrie einen naheliegenden zus{\"a}tzlichen Wertsch{\"o}pfungsschritt dar. In Kooperation mit der S{\"u}d Chemie AG wurde damit begonnen, ein Verfahren zu entwickeln, das kosteng{\"u}nstige mineralische Adsorbentien verwendet. Bisher konnte die Abtrennung von Lactose von den Molkenproteinen aus verd{\"u}nntem Molkekonzentrat in einem Verfahrensschritt ohne Vorbehandlung des Rohstoffs erfolgreich realisiert werden. Aktuelle Arbeiten besch{\"a}ftigen sich mit der Verbesserung der Proteinbindekapazit{\"a}tund chromatographischen Proteinauftrennung sowie dem Upscaling zum direkten Einsatz von Molkekonzentrat ohne Vorverd{\"u}nnung.},

  abstract  = {Nachwachsende Rohstoffe stellen eine reichhaltige Quelle f{\"u}r die Gewinnung von wirtschaftlich interessanten Biomolek{\"u}len dar. Die Gruppe der Polyphenole ist dabei f{\"u}r mehrere Industriezweige bedeutend. Ihre antioxidativen Eigenschaften sind z. B. f{\"u}r die Pharmaindustrie interessant. Im derzeit bearbeiteten Projekt sollen Polyphenole aus Pflanzenbestandteilen isoliert und aufgereinigt werden, um sie dann als Komponenten f{\"u}r eine Vernetzung von Polymeren auf der Basis von Fetts{\"a}uren einzusetzen. Bisher sind im Wesentlichen Prozesse zur Entfernung von Polyphenolen aus Getr{\"a}nken wie Bier und Wein bekannt. Eine Wiedergewinnung der Polyphenole war in diesen Anwendungen bisher nicht relevant. Die Gewinnung bzw. Abtrennung der Polyphenole erfolgt u. a. durch kommerziell erh{\"a}ltliche Adsorbentien wie PVPP, Adsorberharze XAD16 (Rh{\"o}m \& Haas) oder SP70 (Sepabeads), deren Partikelgr{\"o}ßen im Bereichvon 0,1 ± 0,8 mm und spezifischen Oberfl{\"a}chen von 700 ± 900 m 2 /g liegen. Als Alternative zu diesen Adsorbern sollen neue Materialien auf Basis von anorganischen Trennmedien, wie z. B. nat{\"u}rlichen Tonmineralien, f{\"u}r die Polyphenolabtrennung verwendet werden. Derzeit wird durch Abgleich von Experiment und Simulation ein Materialscreening durchgef{\"u}hrt. Durch den Einsatz molekulardynamischer Bindungssimulationen wird die Adsorbersuche beschleunigt und Vorhersagen zu Modifikationen bei der Herstellung der neuen Adsorbentien erm{\"o}glicht.},

  abstract  = {Gras hat ein hohes Potenzial als nachwachsender Rohstoff. Bei ungeeigneter Lagerung verderben Gr{\"a}ser allerdings innerhalb weniger Tage. Dieser Nachteil kann durch die Silierung des Grasschnittes behoben werden. Eines der wichtigsten in der Silage enthaltenen Produkte ist die Milchs{\"a}ure. Um diese f{\"u}r weitere Aufarbeitungsschritte zug{\"a}nglich zu machen, wird aus der Silage ein Presssaft hergestellt. Die Milchs{\"a}ure wird aus einem Silagepresssaft mittels Extraktion durch ionische Fl{\"u}ssigkeiten isoliert. Dabei wird zum einen eine reine Milchs{\"a}ure hergestellt, die z. B. f{\"u}r die Herstellung von Polymilchs{\"a}ure genutzt werden kann. Zum anderen wird ein weniger aufgereinigter Extrakt gewonnen, der f{\"u}r die fermentative Produktion von L-Lysin und 1,2-Propandiol genutzt werden soll. Im Rahmen des Projekts erfolgt die gentechnische Optimierung von Corynebacterium glutamicum f{\"u}r die Umsetzung von Milchs{\"a}urezu L-Lysin. Die im nach der Pressung verbleibenden Presskuchen enthaltenen Grasfasern bestehen zu einem großen Teil aus Polysacchariden. Diese werden hydrolysiert und die dabei freigesetzten Zucker zu Grundchemikalien wie Ethanol oder Itakons{\"a}ure fermentiert. Im Rahmen einer vollst{\"a}ndigen Nutzung der Silage wird das Raffinat aus der Milchs{\"a}ureextraktion als Mediumsupplement in der Fermentation eingesetzt, was die Zugabe weiterer Medienbestandteile {\"u}berfl{\"u}ssig macht. Die R{\"u}ckst{\"a}nde der Hydrolysen und Fermentationen sollen dar{\"u}berhinaus f{\"u}r die Herstellung von Biogas genutzt werden.},

  abstract  = {The continuously growing amount of renewable sources starts compromising the stability of electrical grids. Contradictory to fossil fuel power plants, energy production of wind and photovoltaic (PV) energy is fluctuating. Although predictions have significantly improved, an outage of multi-MW offshore wind farms poses a challenging problem. One solution could be the integration of storage systems in the grid. After a short overview, this paper focuses on two exemplary battery storage systems, including the required power electronics. The grid integration, as well as the optimal usage of volatile energy reserves, is presented for a 5- kW PV system for home application, as well as for a 100- MW medium-voltage system, intended for wind farm usage. The efficiency and cost of topologies are investigated as a key parameter for large-scale integration of renewable power at medium- and low-voltage.},

  abstract  = {Durch den Einsatz magnetisierbarer Partikel lassen sich Stoffwechselprodukte direkt und selektiv aus feststoffreichen Fermentationssuspensionen abtrennen. Im Gegensatz zu klassischen Adsorbermaterialien k{\"o}nnen magnetisierbare Partikel mit sehr geringen Durchmessern verwendet werden. Zur deren Abtrennung ist jedoch ein hoher Magnetfeldgradient notwendig. Dieser wird in der Regel durch in der Trennkammer bzw. dem Magnetfeld eingebrachte magnetisierbare Dr{\"a}hte realisiert. Bei der Auslegung der Drahtgitter ist ein Kompromiss zwischen Abtrennrate und Durchl{\"a}ssigkeit n{\"o}tig. Die Ausrichtung der Dr{\"a}hte in Relation zum Magnetfeld, deren Abstand sowie die geometrische Anordnung k{\"o}nnen hierbei variiert werden. Zum Verst{\"a}ndnis der Einfl{\"u}sse auf das sich ausbildende Magnetfeld und die Fluiddynamik wurden Simulationen mit der Finite-Elemente-Methode durchgef{\"u}hrt und experimentell {\"u}berpr{\"u}ft. Hierf{\"u}r wurden die Dr{\"a}hte unter Variation von Anzahl, Richtung und Anordnung in den Hochgradient-Magnetseparator eingebracht. Erste Verifizierungen der Simulationen zeigen, dass die in Magnetfeldrichtung ausgerichteten Dr{\"a}hte (x-Achse) {\"u}ber die geringste Partikelr{\"u}ckhaltef{\"a}higkeit verf{\"u}gen. Die Dr{\"a}hte der y- und z-Achse halten den gr{\"o}ßten Anteil der Magnetpartikel zur{\"u}ck, wobei die Dr{\"a}hte in y-Richtung den h{\"o}chsten Feldgradienten ausbilden. Des Weiteren konnte gezeigt werden, dass eine rhomboedrische Drahtanordnung der kubischen vorzuziehen ist.},

  abstract  = {Drought-induced forest decline, like the Scots pine mortality in inner-Alpine valleys, will gain in importance as the frequency and severity of drought events are expected to increase. To understand how chronic drought affects tree growth and tree-ring δ13C values, we studied mature Scots pine in an irrigation experiment in an inner-Alpine valley. Tree growth and isotope analyses were carried out at the annual and seasonal scale. At the seasonal scale, maximum δ13C values were measured after the hottest and driest period of the year, and were associated with decreasing growth rates. Inter-annual δ13C values in early- and latewood showed a strong correlation with annual climatic conditions and an immediate decrease as a response to irrigation. This indicates a tight coupling between wood formation and the freshly produced assimilates for trees exposed to chronic drought. This rapid appearance of the isotopic signal is a strong indication for an immediate and direct transfer of newly synthesized assimilates for biomass production. The fast appearance and the distinct isotopic signal suggest a low availability of old stored carbohydrates. If this was a sign for C-storage depletion, an increasing mortality could be expected when stressors increase the need for carbohydrate for defence, repair or regeneration.},

  abstract  = {Variability in xylem anatomy is of interest to plant scientists because of the role water transport plays in plant performance and survival. Insights into plant adjustments to changing environmental conditions have mainly been obtained through structural and functional comparative studies between taxa or within taxa on contrasting sites or along environmental gradients. Yet, a gap exists regarding the study of hydraulic adjustments in response to environmental changes over the lifetimes of plants. In trees, dated tree-ring series are often exploited to reconstruct dynamics in ecological conditions, and recent work in which wood-anatomical variables have been used in dendrochronology has produced promising results. Environmental signals identified in water-conducting cells carry novel information reflecting changes in regional conditions and are mostly related to short, sub-annual intervals. Although the idea of investigating environmental signals through wood anatomical time series goes back to the 1960s, it is only recently that low-cost computerized image-analysis systems have enabled increased scientific output in this field. We believe that the study of tree-ring anatomy is emerging as a promising approach in tree biology and climate change research, particularly if complemented by physiological and ecological studies. This contribution presents the rationale, the potential, and the methodological challenges of this innovative approach.},
