  abstract  = {Objective This study assesses and quantifies impairment of postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 7 Tesla (T) after implantation of titanium cranial fixation plates (CFPs) for neurosurgical bone flap fixation. Materials and methods The study group comprised five patients who were intra-individually examined with 3 and 7 T MRI preoperatively and postoperatively (within 72 h/3 months) after implantation of CFPs. Acquired sequences included T₁-weighted magnetization-prepared rapid-acquisition gradient-echo (MPRAGE), T₂-weighted turbo-spin-echo (TSE) imaging, and susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI). Two experienced neurosurgeons and a neuroradiologist rated image quality and the presence of artifacts in consensus reading. Results Minor artifacts occurred around the CFPs in MPRAGE and T2 TSE at both field strengths, with no significant differences between 3 and 7 T. In SWI, artifacts were accentuated in the early postoperative scans at both field strengths due to intracranial air and hemorrhagic remnants. After resorption, the brain tissue directly adjacent to skull bone could still be assessed. Image quality after 3 months was equal to the preoperative examinations at 3 and 7 T. Conclusion Image quality after CFP implantation was not significantly impaired in 7 T MRI, and artifacts were comparable to those in 3 T MRI.},

  abstract  = {Deammonification for nitrogen removal in municipal wastewater in temperate and cold climate zones is currently limited to the side stream of municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTP). This study developed a conceptual model of a mainstream deammonification plant, designed for 30,000 P.E., considering possible solutions corresponding to the challenging mainstream conditions in Germany. In addition, the energy-saving potential, nitrogen elimination performance and construction-related costs of mainstream deammonification were compared to a conventional plant model, having a single-stage activated sludge process with upstream denitrification. The results revealed that an additional treatment step by combining chemical precipitation and ultra-fine screening is advantageous prior the mainstream deammonification. Hereby chemical oxygen demand (COD) can be reduced by 80\% so that the COD:N ratio can be reduced from 12 to 2.5. Laboratory experiments testing mainstream conditions of temperature (8-20°C), pH (6-9) and COD:N ratio (1-6) showed an achievable volumetric nitrogen removal rate (VNRR) of at least 50 gN/(m3∙d) for various deammonifying sludges from side stream deammonification systems in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, where m3 denotes reactor volume. Assuming a retained Norganic content of 0.0035 kgNorg./(P.E.∙d) from the daily loads of N at carbon removal stage and a VNRR of 50 gN/(m3∙d) under mainstream conditions, a resident-specific reactor volume of 0.115 m3/(P.E.) is required for mainstream deammonification. This is in the same order of magnitude as the conventional activated sludge process, i.e., 0.173 m3/(P.E.) for an MWWTP of size class of 4. The conventional plant model yielded a total specific electricity demand of 35 kWh/(P.E.∙a) for the operation of the whole MWWTP and an energy recovery potential of 15.8 kWh/(P.E.∙a) through anaerobic digestion. In contrast, the developed mainstream deammonification model plant would require only a 21.5 kWh/(P.E.∙a) energy demand and result in 24 kWh/(P.E.∙a) energy recovery potential, enabling the mainstream deammonification model plant to be self-sufficient. The retrofitting costs for the implementation of mainstream deammonification in existing conventional MWWTPs are nearly negligible as the existing units like activated sludge reactors, aerators and monitoring technology are reusable. However, the mainstream deammonification must meet the performance requirement of VNRR of about 50 gN/(m3∙d) in this case.},

  abstract  = {The objective of this study is the establishment of a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) based method for online analysis of the biodegradation of polymers in complex environments. Structural changes during biodegradation, such as an increase in brittleness or crystallinity, can be detected by carefully observing characteristic changes in DSC profiles. Until now, DSC profiles have not been used to draw quantitative conclusions about biodegradation. A new method is presented for quantifying the biodegradation using DSC data, whereby the results were validated using two reference methods. The proposed method is applied to evaluate the biodegradation of three polymeric biomaterials: polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), cellulose acetate (CA) and Organosolv lignin. The method is suitable for the precise quantification of the biodegradability of PHB. For CA and lignin, conclusions regarding their biodegradation can be drawn with lower resolutions. The proposed method is also able to quantify the biodegradation of blends or composite materials, which differentiates it from commonly used degradation detection methods.},

  abstract  = {Digital elevation models (DEMs), represent the three-dimensional terrain and are the basic input for numerical snow avalanche dynamics simulations. DEMs can be acquired using topographic maps or remote-sensing technologies, such as photogrammetry or lidar. Depending on the acquisition technique, different spatial resolutions and qualities are achieved. However, there is a lack of studies that investigate the sensitivity of snow avalanche simulation algorithms to the quality and resolution of DEMs. Here, we perform calculations using the numerical avalance dynamics model RAMMS, varying the quality and spatial resolution of the underlying DEMs, while holding the simulation parameters constant. We study both channelized and open-terrain avalanche tracks with variable roughness. To quantify the variance of these simulations, we use well-documented large-scale avalanche events from Davos, Switzerland (winter 2007/08), and from our large-scale avalanche test site, Valĺee de la Sionne (winter 2005/06). We find that the DEM resolution and quality is critical for modeled flow paths, run-out distances, deposits, velocities and impact pressures. Although a spatial resolution of ~25 m is sufficient for large-scale avalanche modeling, the DEM datasets must be checked carefully for anomalies and artifacts before using them for dynamics calculations.},

  abstract  = {Dieser Artikel befasst sich mit dem Investitionsdilemma in der Stromerzeugung, welches in unzureichend ausgestalteten liberalisierten Stromm{\"a}rkten zu einem gesamtwirtschaftlich unerw{\"u}nscht geringen Niveau an Versorgungssicherheit f{\"u}hrt. Die origin{\"a}ren Ursachen im deutschen Strommarkt liegen in einer eingeschr{\"a}nkten Schadenersatzpflicht der Lieferanten im Falle eines kapazit{\"a}tsbedingten Stromausfalls und in der zeitlichen Differenz zwischen letzter Handelsm{\"o}glichkeit und Lieferung. Letzteres verhindert ein jederzeitiges individuelles Glattstellen von unerwartet auftretenden Ein- bzw. Ausspeise{\"a}nderungen. Des Weiteren f{\"u}hren Faktoren wie die fehlende Partizipation der Endverbraucher am Großhandelsmarkt, die nur undifferenziert m{\"o}gliche Abschaltung von Endverbrauchern oder time lags durch lange Bau- und Genehmigungszeiten von Erzeugungskapazit{\"a}ten in Verbindung mit {\"u}ber lange Zeitr{\"a}ume nicht versicherbaren Risiken bez{\"u}glich Brennstoff-, CO2-Zertifikate- und Strompreisen zu einer Versch{\"a}rfung der Problematik.   abstract  = {Nach der Bundestagswahl am 27. September 2009 steht der Atomausstieg in Deutschland wieder ganz oben auf der politischen Agenda. Eine aktuelle Bestandsaufnahme aller ma\geblichen Argumente erscheint somit zwingend notwendig. Dabei sollte der Blickwinkel nicht national beschr{\"a}nkt bleiben, sondern vor allem der Einfluss der europ{\"a}ischen Dimension dieser Thematik miteinbezogen werden. Auf europ{\"a}ischer Ebene zeigt sich eine Position zu Gunsten der Kernenergie. Unter den 27 EU-Staaten findet gerade eine Renaissance der Atomkraft statt. Die drei europ{\"a}ischen Organe bef{\"u}rworten den umfangreichen Einsatz der Kernenergie als langfristigen Bestandteil des Energietr{\"a}germix. Deutschland geh{\"o}rt mit seinem Beschluss zum Atomausstieg einer Minderheit an. Als Teil eines immer st{\"a}rker zusammen wachsenden und letztendlich vollst{\"a}ndig integrierten europ{\"a}ischen Strommarktes wird Deutschland langfristig stets mit Atomstrom versorgt werden. Dies gilt losgel{\"o}st von dem Einsatz von Kernkraftwerken im Inland. Eine Abschaltung der Anlagen f{\"u}hrt damit nicht zur Zielerreichung der Atomkraftgegner, sondern lediglich zu zus{\"a}tzlichen energietechnischen Herausforderungen bei der Sicherstellung der deutschen Stromversorgung. Der deutsche Atomausstieg sollte aus diesem Grund von der neuen Bundesregierung zur{\"u}ck genommen werden.},

  abstract  = {Next-generation aircraft designs often incorporate multiple large propellers attached along the wingspan (distributed electric propulsion), leading to highly flexible dynamic systems that can exhibit aeroelastic instabilities. This paper introduces a validated methodology to investigate the aeroelastic instabilities of wing-propeller systems and to understand the dynamic mechanism leading to wing and whirl flutter and transition from one to the other. Factors such as nacelle positions along the wing span and chord and its propulsion system mounting stiffness are considered. Additionally, preliminary design guidelines are proposed for flutter-free wing-propeller systems applicable to novel aircraft designs. The study demonstrates how the critical speed of the wing-propeller systems is influenced by the mounting stiffness and propeller position. Weak mounting stiffnesses result in whirl flutter, while hard mounting stiffnesses lead to wing flutter. For the latter, the position of the propeller along the wing span may change the wing mode shapes and thus the flutter mechanism. Propeller positions closer to the wing tip enhance stability, but pusher configurations are more critical due to the mass distribution behind the elastic axis.},

These highly flexible dynamic systems can exhibit uncommon aeroelastic instabilities, which should be carefully investigated to ensure safe operation. The interaction between the propeller and the wing is of particular importance. It is known that whirl flutter is stabilized by wing motion and wing aerodynamics. This paper investigates the effect of a propeller onto wing flutter as a function of span position and mounting stiffness between the propeller and wing. The analysis of a comparison between a tractor and pusher configuration has shown that the coupled system is more stable than the standalone wing for propeller positions near the wing tip for both configurations. The wing fluttermechanism is mostly affected by the mass of the propeller and the resulting change in eigenfrequencies of the wing. For very weak mounting stiffnesses, whirl flutter occurs, which was shown to be stabilized compared to a standalone propeller due to wing motion. On the other hand, the pusher configuration is, as to be expected, the more critical configuration due to the attached mass behind the elastic axis.},

In a subsequent evaluation, the trends in the luxury industry were summarized for the areas of ecological, social, and economic sustainability.   abstract  = {Two types of microvalves based on temperature-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and pH-responsive poly(sodium acrylate) (PSA) hydrogel films have been developed and tested. The PNIPAAm and PSA hydrogel films were prepared by means of in situ photopolymerization directly inside the fluidic channel of a microfluidic chip fabricated by combining Si and SU-8 technologies. The swelling/shrinking properties and height changes of the PNIPAAm and PSA films inside the fluidic channel were studied at temperatures of deionized water from 14 to 36 °C and different pH values (pH 3-12) of Titrisol buffer, respectively. Additionally, in separate experiments, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the PNIPAAm hydrogel was investigated by means of a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) method. Mass-flow measurements have shown the feasibility of the prepared hydrogel films to work as an on-chip integrated temperature- or pH-responsive microvalve capable to switch the flow channel on/off.},

  abstract  = {A microfluidic chip integrating amperometric enzyme sensors for the detection of glucose, glutamate and glutamine in cell-culture fermentation processes has been developed. The enzymes glucose oxidase, glutamate oxidase and glutaminase were immobilized by means of cross-linking with glutaraldehyde on platinum thin-film electrodes integrated within a microfluidic channel. The biosensor chip was coupled to a flow-injection analysis system for electrochemical characterization of the sensors. The sensors have been characterized in terms of sensitivity, linear working range and detection limit. The sensitivity evaluated from the respective peak areas was 1.47, 3.68 and 0.28 μAs/mM for the glucose, glutamate and glutamine sensor, respectively. The calibration curves were linear up to a concentration of 20 mM glucose and glutamine and up to 10 mM for glutamate. The lower detection limit amounted to be 0.05 mM for the glucose and glutamate sensor, respectively, and 0.1 mM for the glutamine sensor. Experiments in cell-culture medium have demonstrated a good correlation between the glutamate, glutamine and glucose concentrations measured with the chip-based biosensors in a differential-mode and the commercially available instrumentation. The obtained results demonstrate the feasibility of the realized microfluidic biosensor chip for monitoring of bioprocesses.},

  abstract  = {Planar and three-dimensional (3D) interdigitated electrodes (IDE) with electrode digits separated by an insulating barrier of different heights were electrochemically characterized and compared in terms of their sensing properties. Due to the impact of the surface resistance, both types of IDE structures display a non-linear behavior in low-ionic strength solutions. The experimental data were fitted to an electrical equivalent circuit and interpreted taking into account the surface-charge-governed properties. The effect of a charged polyelectrolyte layer electrostatically assembled onto the sensor surface on the surface resistance in solutions with different KCl concentration is studied. In case of the same electrode footprint, 3D-IDEs show a larger cell constant and a higher sensitivity to molecular adsorption than that of planar IDEs. The obtained results demonstrate the potential of 3D-IDEs as a new transducer structure for a direct label-free sensing of charged molecules.},

  abstract  = {The conjunction of (bio-)chemical recognition elements with nanoscale biological building blocks such as virus particles is considered as a very promising strategy for the creation of biohybrids opening novel opportunities for label-free biosensing. This work presents a new approach for the development of biosensors using tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) nanotubes or coat proteins (CPs) as enzyme nanocarriers. Sensor chips combining an array of Pt electrodes loaded with glucose oxidase (GOD)-modified TMV nanotubes or CP aggregates were used for amperometric detection of glucose as a model system for the first time. The presence of TMV nanotubes or CPs on the sensor surface allows binding of a high amount of precisely positioned enzymes without substantial loss of their activity, and may also ensure accessibility of their active centers for analyte molecules. Specific and efficient immobilization of streptavidin-conjugated GOD ([SA]-GOD) complexes on biotinylated TMV nanotubes or CPs was achieved via bioaffinity binding. These layouts were tested in parallel with glucose sensors with adsorptively immobilized [SA]-GOD, as well as [SA]-GOD crosslinked with glutardialdehyde, and came out to exhibit superior sensor performance. The achieved results underline a great potential of an integration of virus/biomolecule hybrids with electronic transducers for future applications in biosensorics and biochips.},

  abstract  = {Silos generally work as storage structures between supply and demand for various goods, and their structural safety has long been of interest to the civil engineering profession. This is especially true for dynamically loaded silos, e.g., in case of seismic excitation. Particularly thin-walled cylindrical silos are highly vulnerable to seismic induced pressures, which can cause critical buckling phenomena of the silo shell. The analysis of silos can be carried out in two different ways. In the first, the seismic loading is modeled through statically equivalent loads acting on the shell. Alternatively, a time history analysis might be carried out, in which nonlinear phenomena due to the filling as well as the interaction between the shell and the granular material are taken into account. The paper presents a comparison of these approaches. The model used for the nonlinear time history analysis considers the granular material by means of the intergranular strain approach for hypoplasticity theory. The interaction effects between the granular material and the shell is represented by contact elements. Additionally, soil-structure interaction effects are taken into account.},

Zun{\"a}chst wurde das seismische Verhalten von drei modernen unbewehrten Mauerwerksgeb{\"a}uden in der Region Emilia Romagna in Italien w{\"a}hrend der Erdbebenserie im Jahr 2012 in Kooperation mit der Universit{\"a}t Pavia eingehend untersucht. Aufbauend auf den Erkenntnissen dieser Untersuchungen wurde ein verbessertes seismisches Bemessungskonzept f{\"u}r unbewehrte Mauerwerksbauten erarbeitet. Der Beitrag stellt die wesentlichen Ergebnisse dieser Forschungsarbeiten und deren Eingang in die Normung vor.},

Oktober 2013 ist das auf drei Jahre angelegte EU-Forschungsprojekt INSYSME - Innovative Systeme f{\"u}r erdbebentaugliche Ausfachungsw{\"a}nde aus Ziegelmauerwerk in Stahlbetonrahmentragwerken - gestartet. Unter der Koordination der Universit{\"a}t Padua beteiligen sich 16 Partner aus sechs europ{\"a}ischen L{\"a}ndern (Deutschland, Griechenland, Italien, Portugal, Rum{\"a}nien, T{\"u}rkei). Als deutsche Partner nehmen die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Mauerziegel aus Bonn, die Universit{\"a}t Kassel sowie das Ingenieurb{\"u}ro SDA-engineering GmbH aus Herzogenrath, teil. Ziel der deutschen Partner ist die Entwicklung von innovativen Ausfachungssystemen aus monolithischem w{\"a}rmed{\"a}mmenden Ziegelmauerwerk, mit denen nicht nur eine erh{\"o}hte Erdbebensicherheit, sondern auch die sichere Erf{\"u}llung der steigenden Anforderungen aus Windbeanspruchungen gew{\"a}hrleistet werden k{\"o}nnen. Die Forschungsergebnisse sollen vom Partner SDA-engineering GmbH in die bereits seit einigen Jahren verf{\"u}gbare Softwarel{\"o}sung MINEA [1] integriert werden. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden nach einer kurzen thematischen Einf{\"u}hrung die Ergebnisse von Tastversuchen an senkrecht zur Ebene belasteten Ausfachungsw{\"a}nden aus Planziegelmauerwerk vorgestellt.
