Among other things, tree species with the ability to cope with more extreme climate conditions have to be identified. However, while environmental factors may severely limit tree growth or even cause tree death, assessing a tree species' potential for surviving future aggravated environmental conditions is rather demanding. The aim of this study was to find a tree-ring-based method suitable for identifying very drought-tolerant species, particularly potential substitute species for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Valais. In this inner-Alpine valley, Scots pine used to be the dominating species for dry forests, but today it suffers from high drought-induced mortality. We investigate the growth response of two native tree species, Scots pine and European larch (Larix decidua Mill.), and two non-native species, black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Mirb. var. menziesii), to drought. This involved analysing how the radial increment of these species responded to increasing water shortage (abandonment of irrigation) and to increasingly frequent drought years. Black pine and Douglas fir are able to cope with drought better than Scots pine and larch, as they show relatively high radial growth even after irrigation has been stopped and a plastic growth response to drought years. European larch does not seem to be able to cope with these dry conditions as it lacks the ability to recover from drought years. The analysis of trees' short-term response to extreme climate events seems to be the most promising and suitable method for detecting how tolerant a tree species is towards drought. However, combining all the methods used in this study provides a complete picture of how water shortage could limit species.}, language = {en} } @article{StreunChavanLameetal.2006, author = {Streun, M. and Chavan, U. and Lame, H. and Parl, C. and M{\"u}ller-Veggian, Mattea and Ziemons, Karl}, title = {Treating the Gain Non-Uniformity of Multi Channel PMTs by Channel-Specific Trigger Levels}, series = {2006 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record, Vol. 2.}, journal = {2006 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record, Vol. 2.}, address = {San Diego, CA}, issn = {1082-3654}, pages = {1301 -- 1304}, year = {2006}, language = {en} } @article{MennickenPeterKaulenetal.2020, author = {Mennicken, Max and Peter, Sophia K. and Kaulen, Corinna and Simon, Ulrich and Karth{\"a}user, Silvia}, title = {Transport through Redox-Active Ru-Terpyridine Complexes Integrated in Single Nanoparticle Devices}, series = {The Journal of Physical Chemistry C}, volume = {124}, journal = {The Journal of Physical Chemistry C}, number = {8}, publisher = {ACS Publications}, address = {Washington, DC}, issn = {1932-7455}, doi = {10.1021/acs.jpcc.9b11716}, pages = {4881 -- 4889}, year = {2020}, abstract = {Transition metal complexes are electrofunctional molecules due to their high conductivity and their intrinsic switching ability involving a metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Here, a method is presented to contact reliably a few to single redox-active Ru-terpyridine complexes in a CMOS compatible nanodevice and preserve their electrical functionality. Using hybrid materials from 14 nm gold nanoparticles (AuNP) and bis-{4′-[4-(mercaptophenyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine]}-ruthenium(II) complexes a device size of 30² nm² inclusive nanoelectrodes is achieved. Moreover, this method bears the opportunity for further downscaling. The Ru-complex AuNP devices show symmetric and asymmetric current versus voltage curves with a hysteretic characteristic in two well separated conductance ranges. By theoretical approximations based on the single-channel Landauer model, the charge transport through the formed double-barrier tunnel junction is thoroughly analyzed and its sensibility to the molecule/metal contact is revealed. However, the effect of changes in tendon mechanical properties induced by chronic loading is still poorly understood. We tested the hypothesis that a training-induced increase in Achilles tendon stiffness would result in reduced tendon strain during the stance phase of running, which would reduce fascicle strains in the triceps surae muscles, particularly in the mono-articular soleus. Methods Eleven subjects were assigned to a training group performing isometric singleleg plantarflexion contractions three times per week for ten weeks, and another ten subjects formed a control group. Before and after the training period, Achilles tendon stiffness was estimated, and muscle-tendon mechanics were assessed during running at preferred speed using ultrasonography, kinematics and kinetics. Results Achilles tendon stiffness increased by 18\% (P <0:01) in the training group, but the associated reduction in strain seen during isometric contractions was not statistically significant. Tendon elongation during the stance phase of running was similar after training, but tendon recoil was reduced by 30\% (P <0:01), while estimated tendon force remained unchanged. Neither gastrocnemius medialis nor soleus fascicle shortening during stance was affected by training. Discussion These results show that a training-induced increase in Achilles tendon stiffness altered tendon behaviour during running. Despite training-induced changes in tendon mechanical properties and recoil behaviour, the data suggest that fascicle shortening patterns were preserved for the running speed that we examined. The asymmetrical changes in tendon strain patterns supports the notion that simple inseries models do not fully explain the mechanical output of the muscle-tendon unit during a complex task like running.}, language = {en} } @article{Laumann2005, author = {Laumann, J{\"o}rg}, title = {Traglastversuche an Aluminiumfassaden}, publisher = {Ruhr-Univ. This not only makes it difficult to trace them back but also leaves room for criminal organizations to fake them unnoticed. For these reasons, it is becoming increasingly difficult to determine the exact origin of drugs. The goal of this work was to investigate how exactly this is possible by using different spectroscopic methods like nuclear magnetic resonance and near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy in combination with multivariate data analysis. As an example, 56 out of 64 different paracetamol preparations, collected from 19 countries around the world, were chosen to investigate whether it is possible to determine the pharmaceutical company, manufacturing site, or country of origin. By means of suitable pre-processing of the spectra and the different information contained in each method, principal component analysis was able to evaluate manufacturing relationships between individual companies and to differentiate between production sites or formulations. Linear discriminant analysis showed different results depending on the spectral method and purpose. For all spectroscopic methods, it was found that the classification of the preparations to their manufacturer achieves better results than the classification to their pharmaceutical company. The best results were obtained with nuclear magnetic resonance and near-infrared data, with 94.6\%/99.6\% and 98.7/100\% of the spectra of the preparations correctly assigned to their pharmaceutical company or manufacturer.}, language = {en} } @article{GunGutkinLevetal.2011, author = {Gun, Jenny and Gutkin, Vitaly and Lev, Ovadia and Boyen, Hans-Gerd and Saitner, Marc and Wagner, Patrick and Olieslaeger, Marc D´ and Abouzar, Maryam H. and Poghossian, Arshak and Sch{\"o}ning, Michael Josef}, title = {Tracing gold nanoparticle charge by electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor devices}, series = {Journal of Physical Chemistry C. 115 (2011), H. 11}, journal = {Journal of Physical Chemistry C. 115 (2011), H. 11}, publisher = {American Cemical Society}, address = {Washington, DC}, isbn = {1932-7455}, pages = {4439 -- 4445}, year = {2011}, language = {en} } @article{GlueckSchoeningLuethetal.1997, author = {Gl{\"u}ck, O. and Sch{\"o}ning, Michael Josef and L{\"u}th, H. and Emons, H. and Hanewinkel, C. and Schumacher, D. and Otto, A.}, title = {Trace metal determination with gold microelectrodes fabricated by silicon technology}, series = {Proceedings of the 11th European Conference on Solid-State Transducers / Eurosensors XI, September 21 - 24, 1997, Warsaw, Poland.
