  abstract  = {In the present work, surface functionalization of different sensor materials was studied. Organosilanes are well known to serve as coupling agent for biomolecules or cells on inorganic materials. 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was used to attach microbiological spores time to an interdigitated sensor surface. The functionality and physical properties of APTES were studied on isolated sensor materials, namely silicon dioxide (SiO2) and platinum (Pt) as well as the combined material on sensor level. A predominant immobilization of spores could be demonstrated on SiO2 surfaces. Additionally, the impedance signal of APTES-functionalized biosensor chips has been investigated.},

  abstract  = {The methodological discourse of mixed-methods research offers general procedures to combine quantitative and qualitative methods for investigating complex fields of research such as higher education. However, integrating different methods still poses considerable challenges. To move beyond general recommendations for mixed-methods research, this chapter proposes to discuss methodological issues with respect to a particular research domain. Taking current studies on the transition to higher education as an example, the authors first provide an overview of the potentials and limitations of quantitative and qualitative methods in the research domain. Second, they show the need for a conceptual framework grounded in the theory of the research object to guide the integration of different methods and findings. Finally, an example study that investigates transition with regard to the interplay of the individual student and the institutional context serves to illustrate the guiding role of theory. The framework integrates different theoretical perspectives on transition, informs the selection of the research methods, and defines the nexus of the two strands that constitute the mixed-methods design. As the interplay of individual and context is of concern for teaching and learning in general, the example presented may be fruitful for the wider field of higher education research.},

  abstract  = {F{\"u}r Auftragschweißaufgaben existiert eine Vielzahl an verfahrenstechnischen Prozessvarianten, die je nach Charakteristik und Anwendungsfall ausgew{\"a}hlt werden. Ein Nachteil der vorwiegend verwendeten Metall- Schutzgasschweißprozesse (MSG) f{\"u}r das Auftragschweißen ist durch die direkte Kopplung von Drahtvorschub zu Energieeintrag gegeben. Die vorgestellte Zweidraht-Prozessvariante kann durch die Ausbildung eines {\"u}bertragenen und eines nicht-{\"u}bertragenen Lichtbogens die elektrische Leistung beider Lichtb{\"o}gen variieren und damit einen direkten Einfluss auf die Prozessgr{\"o}ßen Abschmelzleistung und Aufschmelzgrad nehmen. Im Speziellen besteht {\"u}ber die Entkopplung von Drahtvorschub zu Schweißstromst{\"a}rke die M{\"o}glichkeit eines niederenergetischen Betriebs trotz hoher Drahtvorschubgeschwindigkeit. Damit lassen sich Aufschmelzgrade unter 2\% umsetzen und Abschmelzleistungen bis zu 15 kg/h realisieren.},

  abstract  = {The Micromix combustion principle, based on cross-flow mixing of air and hydrogen, promises low emission applications in future gas turbines. The Micromix combustion takes place in several hundreds of miniaturized diffusion-type micro-flames. The major advantage is the inherent safety against flash-back and low NOx-emissions due to a very short residence time of reactants in the flame region. The paper gives insight into the Micromix design and scaling procedure for different energy densities and the interaction of scaling laws and key design drivers in gas turbine integration. Numerical studies, experimental testing, gas turbine integration and interface considerations are evaluated. The aerodynamic stabilization of the miniaturized flamelets and the resulting flow field, flame structure and NOx formation are analysed experimentally and numerically. The results show and confirm the successful adaption of the low NOx Micromix characteristics for a range of different nozzle sizes, energy densities and thermal power output.},

  abstract  = {Gearboxes are mechanical transmission systems that provide speed and torque conversions from a rotating power source. Being a central element of the drive train, they are relevant for the efficiency and durability of motor vehicles. In this work, we present a new approach for gearbox design: Modeling the design problem as a mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP) allows us to create gearbox designs from scratch for arbitrary requirements and—given enough time—to compute provably globally optimal designs for a given objective. We show how different degrees of freedom influence the runtime and present an exemplary solution.},

  abstract  = {Energy-efficient components do not automatically lead to energy-efficient systems. Technical Operations Research (TOR) shifts the focus from the single component to the system as a whole and finds its optimal topology and operating strategy simultaneously. In previous works, we provided a preselected construction kit of suitable components for the algorithm. This approach may give rise to a combinatorial explosion if the preselection cannot be cut down to a reasonable number by human intuition. To reduce the number of discrete decisions, we integrate laws derived from similarity theory into the optimization model. Since the physical characteristics of a production series are similar, it can be described by affinity and scaling laws. Making use of these laws, our construction kit can be modeled more efficiently: Instead of a preselection of components, it now encompasses whole model ranges. This allows us to significantly increase the number of possible set-ups in our model. In this paper, we present how to embed this new formulation into a mixed-integer program and assess the run time via benchmarks. We present our approach on the example of a ventilation system design problem.},

Partnermodelle entstehen durch die gemeinsame Nutzung von IoT-Daten und Big-Data-Technologien und welcher qualitative Mehrwert wird dadurch geschaffen? Als Antwort wird in diesem Beitrag ein Bewertungsrahmen zur qualitativen Wertsch{\"o}pfungsanalyse von IoT vorgeschlagen. Anhand dieses Bewertungsrahmens wird ein Anwendungsfall untersucht, der in anonymisierter Form an konkrete Praxisprojekte angelehnt ist. Gegenst{\"a}nde werden dadurch {\"u}ber große Reichweiten eigenst{\"a}ndig kommunikationsf{\"a}hig. Das IoT steht mit NB-IoT vor einem gestiegenen Nutzenpotenzial, da eine zunehmende Anzahl miteinander verbundener Gegenst{\"a}nde und der Austausch gr{\"o}ßerer Datenmengen realisierbar sind. Damit sind aus wirtschaftlicher Sicht neue, innovative Anwendungsf{\"a}lle des IoT m{\"o}glich, die auch bereits in der Praxis diskutiert werden. In diesem Beitrag wird anhand eines konkreten Anwendungsfalls untersucht, welche neuen Gesch{\"a}fts- bzw. Partnermodelle durch die gemeinsame Nutzung von NB-IoT-Daten und Big Data-Technologien entstehen und welcher qualitative Mehrwert f{\"u}r die an einem Anwendungsfall beteiligten Stakeholder geschaffen wird. Dazu wird - einem konstruktionsorientierten Forschungsansatz folgend - ein Bewertungsrahmen zur qualitativen Wertsch{\"o}pfungsanalyse von NB-IoT entwickelt, der u.a. auf der Schablone nach Cockburn und dem Business Model Canvas basiert.   abstract  = {The telecommunications industry is currently going through a major transformation. In this context, the enhanced Telecom Operations Map (eTOM) is a domain-specific process reference model that is offered by the industry organization TM Forum. In practice, eTOM is well accepted and confirmed as de facto standard. It provides process definitions and process flows on different levels of detail. This article discusses the reference modeling of eTOM, i.e., the design, the resulting artifact, and its evaluation based on three project cases. The application of eTOM in three projects illustrates the design approach and concrete models on strategic and operational levels. The article follows the Design Science Research (DSR) paradigm. It contributes with concrete design artifacts to the transformational needs of the telecommunications industry and offers lessons-learned from a general DSR perspective.},

  abstract  = {This paper presents the results of an eigenvalue analysis of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. A high-resolution finite element model was created directly from the available design documents. All physical properties of the structural components were included in detail, so no calibration to the measured data was necessary. The deck and towers were modeled with shell elements. A nonlinear static analysis was performed before the eigenvalue calculation. The calculated natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes showed good agreement with the available measured ambient vibration data. The calculation of the effective modal mass showed that nine modes had single contributions higher than 5 \% of the total mass. They were in a frequency range up to 1.2 Hz. The comparison of the results for the torsional modes especially demonstrated the advantage of using thin shell finite elements over the beam modeling approach.},

  abstract  = {A light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) is a field-effect-based potentiometric sensor with an electrolyte/insulator/semiconductor (EIS) structure, which is able to monitor analyte concentrations of (bio-)chemical species in aqueous solutions in a spatially resolved way. Therefore, it is also an appropriate tool to record 2D-chemical images of concentration variations on the sensor surface. In the present work, two differential, LAPS-based measurement principles are introduced to determine the metabolic activity of Escherichia coli (E. coli) K12 and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells as test microorganisms. Hereby, we focus on i) the determination of the extracellular acidification rate (ΔpH/min) after adding glucose solutions to the cell suspensions; and ii) recording the amplitude increase of the photocurrent (Iph) related to the produced acids from E. coli K12 bacteria and CHO cells on the sensor surface by 2D-chemical imaging. For this purpose, 3D-printed multi-chamber structures were developed and mounted on the planar sensor-chip surface to define four independent compartments, enabling differential measurements with varying cell concentrations. The differential concept allows eliminating unwanted drift effects and, with the four-chamber structures, measurements on the different cell concentrations were performed simultaneously, thus reducing also the overall measuring time.},

  abstract  = {A physically coupled finite element method (FEM) model is developed to study the response behavior of a calorimetric gas sensor. The modeled sensor serves as a monitoring device of the concentration of gaseous hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2) in a high temperature mixture stream in aseptic sterilization processes. Organosilanes are a versatile option as they facilitate the immobilization through their terminal groups and also display self-assembly. Incorporating hydroxyl groups is one of the important methods for primary immobilization. This can be done, for example, with oxygen plasma treatment. However, this treatment can affect the performance of the biosensors and this effect is not quite well understood for surface functionalization. In this work, the effect of O2 plasma treatment on EIS sensors was investigated by means of electrochemical characterizations: capacitance-voltage (C-V) and constant capacitance (ConCap) measurements. After O2 plasma treatment, the potential of the EIS sensor dramatically shifts to a more negative value. This was successfully reset by using an annealing process.},

  abstract  = {An EIS capacitive sensor is a semiconductor-based potentiometric sensor, which is sensitive to the ion concentration or pH value of the solution in contact with the sensing surface. To detect a small change in the ion concentration or pH, a small capacitance change must be detected. Recently, a resonance-mode measurement was proposed, in which an inductor was connected to the EIS capacitive sensor and the resonant frequency was correlated with the pH value. In this study, the Q factor of the resonant circuit was enhanced by canceling the internal resistance of the reference electrode and the internal resistance of the inductor coil with the help of a bypass capacitor and a negative impedance converter, respectively. 1\% variation of the signal in the developed system corresponded to a pH change of 3.93 mpH, which was about 1/12 of the conventional method, suggesting a better performance in detection of a small pH change.},

  abstract  = {To study chemical and biological processes, spatially resolved determination of the concentrations of one or more analyte species is of distinct interest. With a light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS), chemical images can be created, which visualize the concentration distribution above the sensor plate. One important challenge is to achieve a good lateral resolution in order to detect events that take place in a small and limited region. LAPS utilizes a focused light spot to address the measurement region. By moving this light spot along the semiconductor sensor plate, the concentration distribution can be observed. In this study, we show that utilizing a pulse as light excitation instead of a traditionally used continuously modulated light excitation, the lateral resolution can be improved by a factor of 6 or more.},
