  abstract  = {A methodology for assessment, seismic verification and strengthening of existing masonry buildings is presented in this paper. The verification is performed using a calculation model calibrated with the results from ambient vibration measurements. The calibrated model serves as an input for a deformation-based verification procedure based on the Capacity Spectrum Method (CSM). The bearing capacity of the building is calculated from experimental capacity curves of the individual walls idealized with bilinear elastic-perfectly plastic curves. The experimental capacity curves were obtained from in-plane cyclic loading tests on unreinforced and strengthened masonry walls with reinforced concrete jackets. The seismic action is compared with the load-bearing capacity of the building considering non-linear material behavior with its post-peak capacity. The application of the CSM to masonry buildings and the influence of a traditional strengthening method are demonstrated on the example of a public school building in Skopje, Macedonia.},

  abstract  = {Seismic excited liquid filled tanks are subjected to extreme loading due to hydrodynamic pressures, which can lead to nonlinear stability failure of the thinwalled cylindrical tanks, as it is known from past earthquakes. A significant reduction of the seismically induced loads can be obtained by the application of base isolation systems, which have to be designed carefully with respect to the modified hydrodynamic behaviour of the tank in interaction with the liquid. For this reason a highly sophisticated fluid-structure interaction model has to be applied for a realistic simulation of the overall dynamic system. In the following, such a model is presented and compared with the results of simplified mathematical models for rigidly supported tanks. Finally, it is examined to what extent a simple mechanical model can represent the behaviour of a base isolated tank in case of seismic excitation},

  abstract  = {In electric machines due to high currents and resistive losses (joule heating) heat is produced. To avoid damages by overheating the design of effective cooling systems is required. Therefore the knowledge of heat sources and heat transfer processes is necessary. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate a good and effective calculation method for the temperature analysis based on homogenization techniques. These methods have been applied for the stator windings in a slot of an electric machine consisting of copper wires and resin. The key quantity here is an effective thermal conductivity, which characterizes the heterogeneous wire resin-arrangement inside the stator slot. To illustrate the applicability of the method, the analysis of a simplified, homogenized model is compared with the detailed analysis of temperature behavior inside a slot of an electric machine according to the heat generation. We considered here only the stationary situation. The achieved numerical results are accurate and show that the applied homogenization technique works in practice. Finally the results of simulations for the two cases, the original model of the slot and the homogenized model chosen for the slot (unit cell), are compared to experimental results.},

As simulation software COMSOL is used. The main philosophy was to combine theory and praxis in a way that motivates the students. In addition "soft skills" should be improved. This was achieved by project work as final examination. As underlying didactical principle the ideas of Bloom's revised taxonomy were followed. The paper basically focusses on educational aspects, e.g. how to structure the course, plan the exercises, organize the project work and include practical COMSOL examples.},

  abstract  = {The 2nd edition of the lightning risk management standard (IEC 62305-2) considers structures, which may endanger environment. In these cases, the loss is not limited to the structure itself, which is valid for usual structures. In the past (Edition 1) this danger was simply taken into account by a special hazard factor, multiplying the existing risk for the structure with a number. Now, in the edition 2, we add to the risk for the structure itself a "second risk" due to the losses outside the structure. The losses outside can be treated independently from what occurs inside. This is a major advantage to analyze the risk for sensitive structures, like chemical plants, nuclear plants, or structures containing explosives, etc. In this paper, the existing procedure given by the European version EN 62305-2 Ed.2 is further developed and applied to a few structures.},

  abstract  = {Following earlier studies, we present forward and inverse simulations of heat and fluid transport of the upper crust using a local 3-D model of the Kola area. We provide best estimates for palaeotemperatures and permeabilities, their errors and their dependencies. Our results allow discriminating between the two mentioned processes to a certain extent, partly resolving the non-uniqueness of the problem. We find clear indications for a significant contribution of advective heat transport, which, in turn, imply only slightly lower ground surface temperatures during the last glacial maximum relative to the present value. These findings are consistent with the general background knowledge of (i) the fracture zones and the corresponding fluid movements in the bedrock and (ii) the glacial history of the Kola area.},

  abstract  = {Die Erdbeben in Albstadt 1978 (Magnitude 5,7), Roermond 1992 (Magnitude 5,9) oder in Waldkirch 2004 (Magnitude 5,1) haben verdeutlicht, dass die erdbebensichere Auslegung von Mauerwerksbauten auch in Deutschland von großer Bedeutung ist. Bereits im Jahr 1981 wurde die DIN 4149 (1981) "Bauten in deutschen Erdbebengebieten - Lastannahmen, Bemessung und Ausf{\"u}hrung {\"u}blicher Hochbauten" eingef{\"u}hrt, in der aber f{\"u}r Mauerwerksbauten nur wenige Anforderungen gestellt wurden. Diese Norm wurde durch den NABau-Arbeitsausschuss "Erdbeben; Sonderfragen" des Deutschen Instituts f{\"u}r Normung e.V. (DIN) auf Grundlage des Eurocode 8 (2004) vollst{\"a}ndig {\"u}berarbeitet und durch die DIN 4149 (2005) abgel{\"o}st, die umfangreiche Regelungen f{\"u}r die seismische Auslegung von Mauerwerksbauten enth{\"a}lt. Mittlerweile liegen die DIN EN 1998-1 (2010) und der Nationale Anhang DIN EN 1998-1/NA (2011) vor, die nach Einarbeitung der Ergebnisse der durchgef{\"u}hrten Anwendungserprobung bauaufsichtlich eingef{\"u}hrt und die DIN 4149 (2005) ersetzen werden. Als deutsche Partner nehmen die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Mauerziegel aus Bonn, die Universit{\"a}t Kassel sowie das Ingenieurb{\"u}ro SDA-engineering GmbH aus Herzogenrath, teil. Ziel der deutschen Partner ist die Entwicklung von innovativen Ausfachungssystemen aus monolithischem w{\"a}rmed{\"a}mmenden Ziegelmauerwerk, mit denen nicht nur eine erh{\"o}hte Erdbebensicherheit, sondern auch die sichere Erf{\"u}llung der steigenden Anforderungen aus Windbeanspruchungen gew{\"a}hrleistet werden k{\"o}nnen. Die Forschungsergebnisse sollen vom Partner SDA-engineering GmbH in die bereits seit einigen Jahren verf{\"u}gbare Softwarel{\"o}sung MINEA [1] integriert werden. Weitere Informationen stehen auf den Websites des Projektes [2] zur Verf{\"u}gung. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden nach einer kurzen thematischen Einf{\"u}hrung die Ergebnisse von Tastversuchen an senkrecht zur Ebene belasteten Ausfachungsw{\"a}nden aus Planziegelmauerwerk vorgestellt.   abstract  = {Because of its minor environmental impact, electricity generation using wind power is getting remarkable. The further growth of the wind industry depends on technological solutions to the challenges in production and construction of the turbines. Wind turbine tower vibrations, which limit power generation efficiency and cause fatigue problems with high maintenance costs, count as one of the main structural difficulties in the wind energy sector. To mitigate tower vibrations auxiliary measures are necessary. The effectiveness of tuned mass damper is verified by means of a numeric study on a 5 MW onshore reference wind turbine. Hereby, also seismic-induced vibrations and soil-structure interaction are considered. Acquired results show that tuned mass damper can effectively reduce resonant tower vibrations and improve the fatigue life of wind turbines. This chapter is also concerned with tuned liquid column damper and a semiactive application of it. Due to its geometric versatility and low prime costs, tuned liquid column dampers are a good alternative to other damping measures, in particular for slender structures like wind turbines.},

  abstract  = {A composite layer material used in packaging industry is made from joining layers of different materials using an adhesive. An important processing step in the production of aluminium-containing composites is the surface treatment and consequent coating of adhesive material on the aluminium surface. To increase adhesion strength between aluminium layer and the adhesive material, the foil is heat treated. For efficient heating, induction heating was considered as state-of-the-art treatment process. Due to the complexity of the heating process and the unpredictable nature of the heating source, the control of the process is not yet optimised. In this work, a finite element analysis of the process was established and various process parameters were studied. The process was simplified and modelled in 3D. The numerical model contains an air domain, an aluminium layer and a copper coil fitted with a magnetic field concentrating material. The effect of changing the speed of the aluminium foil (or rolling speed) was studied with the change of the coil current. Statistical analysis was used for generating a general control equation of coil current with changing rolling speed.},

Die Individualisierung beschreibt dabei die Entwicklung hin zur Fokussierung pers{\"o}nlicher Interessen und Lebensentscheidungen der einzelnen Person (Kunze, Individualisierung, 2011). Der Grund f{\"u}r diese Entwicklung sind laut Kunze (Individualisierung, 2011) Treiber wie steigendes Verm{\"o}gen, Bildung und Mobilit{\"a}t, was die einzelne Person unabh{\"a}ngiger von gr{\"o}ßeren Gemeinschaften macht und mehr Freiheit zur Selbstverwirklichung bietet. Als eine Konsequenz daraus werden Wertevorstellungen nicht mehr einfach hingenommen, sondern f{\"u}r die eigene Person {\"u}berpr{\"u}ft und individualisiert (Kunze, Individualisierung, 2011).   abstract  = {A refined substructure technique in the frequency domain is developed, which permits consideration of the interaction effects among adjacent containers through the supporting deformable soil medium. The tank-liquid systems are represented by means of mechanical models, whereas discrete springs and dashpots stand for the soil beneath the foundations. The proposed model is employed to assess the responses of adjacent circular, cylindrical tanks for harmonic and seismic excitations over wide range of tank proportions and soil conditions. The influence of the number, spatial arrangement of the containers and their distance on the overall system's behavior is addressed. The results indicate that the cross-interaction effects can substantially alter the impulsive components of response of each individual element in a tank farm. The degree of this impact is primarily controlled by the tank proportions and the proximity of the predominant natural frequencies of the shell-liquid-soil systems and the input seismic motion. The group effects should be not a priori disregarded, unless the tanks are founded on shallow soil deposit overlying very stiff material or bedrock.},

  abstract  = {The performance and biomass yield of the perennial energy plant Sida hermaphrodita (hereafter referred to as Sida) as a feedstock for biogas and solid fuel was evaluated throughout one entire growing period at agricultural field conditions. A Sida plant development code was established to allow comparison of the plant growth stages and biomass composition. Four scenarios were evaluated to determine the use of Sida biomass with regard to plant development and harvest time: (i) one harvest for solid fuel only; (ii) one harvest for biogas production only; (iii) one harvest for biogas production, followed by a harvest of the regrown biomass for solid fuel; and (iv) two consecutive harvests for biogas production. To determine Sida's value as a feedstock for combustion, we assessed the caloric value, the ash quality, and melting point with regard to DIN EN ISO norms. The results showed highest total dry biomass yields of max. 25 t ha⁻¹, whereas the highest dry matter of 70\% to 80\% was obtained at the end of the growing period. Scenario (i) clearly indicated the highest energy recovery, accounting for 439 288 MJ ha⁻¹; the energy recovery of the four scenarios from highest to lowest followed this order: (i) ≫ (iii) ≫ (iv) > (ii). Analysis of the Sida ashes showed a high melting point of >1500 °C, associated with a net calorific value of 16.5-17.2 MJ kg⁻¹. All prerequisites for DIN EN ISO norms were achieved, indicating Sida's advantage as a solid energy carrier without any post-treatment after harvesting. Cell wall analysis of the stems showed a constant lignin content after sampling week 16 (July), whereas cellulose had already reached a plateau in sampling week 4 (April). The results highlight Sida as a promising woody, perennial plant, providing biomass for flexible and multipurpose energy applications.},

Den Blick bei der Bewertung dieser ausschließlich auf die Fahrzeugnutzung zu richten, ist l{\"a}ngst nicht mehr zufriedenstellend. Im Rahmen dieser Analyse wird ein gegenw{\"a}rtig auf dem Markt erwerblicher und in deutschen St{\"a}dten bereits seit Jahren betriebener Hybridbus energetisch und {\"o}kologisch mit einem konventionell angetriebenen, nahezu baugleichen Modell entlang des Lebensweges bewertet. Nach Definition von Ziel und Untersuchungsrahmen wird ein {\"U}berblick auf bereits durchgef{\"u}hrte Lebenszyklusanalysen zu Hybridbussen im Stadtverkehr gegeben und Schlussfolgerungen f{\"u}r die anschließende Analyse abgeleitet. Diese wird im Rahmen einer energetischen und {\"o}kologischen Bewertung beider Produktsysteme anhand der Parameter "Prim{\"a}renergieeinsatz" und "CO2{\"a}q Emissionen" praktiziert. Der Fahrzeugrumpf beider Fahrzeuge des gleichen Modells wird dabei als einheitlich angenommen, sodass bei dem Vergleich der Herstellung vereinfacht nur die sich unterscheidenden Komponenten des Antriebstranges ber{\"u}cksichtigt werden. Die Resultate der Wirkungsabsch{\"a}tzung werden als Differenz des Hybridbusses gegen{\"u}ber dem Referenzfahrzeug {\"u}ber die einzelnen Lebenszyklusphasen dargestellt. Schließlich werden Prognosen getroffen, ab welcher Strecke die bei der Herstellung erzeugten h{\"o}heren CO2{\"a}q Emissionen des Hybridantriebstranges gegen{\"u}ber dem Referenzmodell ausgeglichen werden.},

  abstract  = {Future engineers are increasingly confronted with the so-called Megatrends which are the big social challenges society has to cope with. These Megatrends, such as "Silver Society", "Globalization", "Mobility" and "Female Shift" require an application-oriented perspective on Diversity especially in the engineering field. Therefore, it is necessary to enable future engineers not only to look at the technical perspectives of a problem, but also to be able to see the related questions within societies they are developing their artefacts for. The aim of teaching engineering should be to prepare engineers for these requirements and to draw attention to the diverse needs in a globalized world. Bringing together technical knowledge and social competences which go beyond a mere training of the so-called "soft skills", is a new approach followed at RWTH Aachen University, one of the leading technical universities in Germany. RWTH Aachen University has established the bridging professorship "Gender and Diversity in Engineering" (GDI) which educates engineers with an interdisciplinary approach to expand engineering limits. In the frame of a sustainable teaching concept the research group under the leadership of Prof. Carmen Leicht-Scholten has developed an approach which imparts a supplication-specific Gender and Diversity expertise to engineers. In workshops students gain theoretical knowledge about Gender and Diversity and learn how to transfer their knowledge in their special field of study and later work. To substantiate this, the course participants have to solve case studies from real life. The cases which are developed in collaboration with non-profit organizations and enterprises from economy rise the students to challenges which are inspired by professional life. Evaluation shows the success of this approach as well as an increasing demand for such teaching formats.},

The big social challenges society has to cope with in future, can only be mastered, if engineers link the development and innovation process closely with the requirements of people. As a result, in the frame of the innovation process engineers have to design and develop products for diverse users. F{\"u}r die Durchf{\"u}hrung von Stabilit{\"a}tsnachweisen stehen verschiedene Verfahren zur Verf{\"u}gung. {\"U}blicherweise werden aus Gr{\"u}nden der Einfachheit spannungsbasierte Verfahren angewendet. Diese sind f{\"u}r Einheitslastf{\"a}lle experimentell abgesichert, wobei eine {\"U}bertragung auf kombinierte Spannungszust{\"a}nde wie im Erdbebenfall nur begrenzt m{\"o}glich ist. Alternativ kann ein globales, numerisches Konzept, das LBA/MNA-Verfahren, angewendet werden. Das Verfahren kombiniert eine materiell nichtlineare Berechnung (MNA) mit einer linearen Beulanalyse (LBA) und erfasst die Interaktion verschiedener gleichzeitig auftretender Beanspruchungen implizit im Nachweis. Dieser Beitrag demonstriert die Anwendung der Verfahren am Beispiel verschiedener Tankgeometrien mit H{\"o}he/Radius-Verh{\"a}ltnissen zwischen 1 ≤ H/R ≤ 2 und Radius/Tankwand-Verh{\"a}ltnissen zwischen 500 ≤ R/t ≤ 1000 und diskutiert zus{\"a}tzlich die Defizite der spannungsbasierten Nachweisverfahren.},
