The present study investigated the occurrence of common harmful algal bloom (HAB) taxa within the Southern California Bight, using cross-correlation functions to determine potential dependencies between HAB taxa and environmental factors, and potential links to algal transport via local hydrography and currents. A simulation study, in which Lagrangian particles were released, was used to assess travel times due to advection by prevailing ocean currents in the bight. Our results indicate that transport of some taxa may be an important mechanism for the expansion of their distributions into other regions, which was supported by mean travel times derived from our simulation study and other literature on ocean currents in the Southern California Bight. In other cases, however, phytoplankton dynamics were rather linked to local environmental conditions, including coastal upwelling events. Overall, our study shows that complex current patterns in the Southern California Bight may contribute significantly to the formation and expansion of HABs in addition to local environmental factors determining the spatiotemporal dynamics of phytoplankton blooms.}, language = {en} } @article{BialonskiHorstmannLehnertz2010, author = {Bialonski, Stephan and Horstmann, Marie-Therese and Lehnertz, Klaus}, title = {From brain to earth and climate systems: Small-world interaction networks or not?}, series = {Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science}, volume = {20}, journal = {Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science}, number = {1}, publisher = {AIP Publishing}, address = {Melville, NY}, issn = {1089-7682}, doi = {10.1063/1.3360561}, pages = {013134}, year = {2010}, abstract = {We consider recent reports on small-world topologies of interaction networks derived from the dynamics of spatially extended systems that are investigated in diverse scientific fields such as neurosciences, geophysics, or meteorology. This increase was observed to occur earlier in complex partial seizures than in secondarily generalized seizures. We here address the question whether such an increase of neuronal correlation prior to seizure end is indeed a global phenomenon, involving both hemispheres or whether there are side-specific differences. Methods: We analyzed 20 focal onset seizures (10 complex partial, 10 secondarily generalized seizures) recorded in 13 patients who underwent presurgical evaluation of focal epilepsies of different origin. EEG was recorded intracranially from bilaterally implanted subdural strip and intrahippocampal depth electrodes. Utilizing a moving window approach, we investigated the evolution of the maximum cross correlation for all channel combinations during seizures. For each moving window the mean value of the maximum cross correlation (MCC) between all electrode contacts was computed separately for each hemisphere. After normalization of seizure durations, MCC values of the ipsi- and contralateral hemisphere for all seizures were determined. Results: We observed that the MCC of the contralateral hemisphere in complex partial seizures increased during the first half of the seizure, whereas, for the same time interval, the MCC of the ipsilateral hemisphere even declined below the level of the pre-seizure period. In contrast, no significant differences between both hemispheres could be observed for secondarily generalized seizures where both hemispheres showed a simultaneous increase of MCC during the second half of the seizures. The level of MCC for the contralateral hemisphere was higher for complex partial seizures than for secondarily generalized seizures during the first half of the seizure. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that there are indeed lateralized differences in the evolution of global neuronal correlation during complex partial and secondarily generalized seizures. The observed contralateral increase of neuronal correlation during complex partial seizures might indicate an emerging self-organizing mechanism for preventing the spread of seizure activity.}, language = {en} } @article{BialonskiWellmerElgeretal.2006, author = {Bialonski, Stephan and Wellmer, J{\"o}rg and Elger, Christian E. and Lehnertz, Klaus}, title = {Interictal focus localization in neocortical lesional epilepsies with synchronization cluster analysis}, series = {Epilepsia}, volume = {47}, journal = {Epilepsia}, issn = {0013-9580}, pages = {36}, year = {2006}, language = {en} } @article{BialonskiWendlerLehnertz2011, author = {Bialonski, Stephan and Wendler, Martin and Lehnertz, Klaus}, title = {Unraveling spurious properties of interaction networks with tailored random networks}, series = {Plos one}, volume = {6}, journal = {Plos one}, number = {8}, publisher = {Plos}, address = {San Francisco}, doi = {10.1371/journal.pone.0022826}, pages = {e22826}, year = {2011}, abstract = {We investigate interaction networks that we derive from multivariate time series with methods frequently employed in diverse scientific fields such as biology, quantitative finance, physics, earth and climate sciences, and the neurosciences. As the Human Development Index provides insight into a country's cultural and socio-economic characteristics and development in addition to economic indicators, it allows a comparison of the two countries. The hypothesis presented and discussed in this paper was researched before. A qualitative research approach was used in the author's master's thesis "The Human Development Index (HDI) as a Reflection of Resource Abundance (using Nigeria and Norway as a case study)" in 2018. The management of scarce resources is an important aspect in the development of modern countries and those on the threshold of becoming industrialised nations. The effects of a mistaken resource management are not only of a purely economic nature but also of a social and socio-economic nature. In order to present a partial aspect of these dependencies and influences this paper uses a quantitative analysis to examine the interdependence and impact of resource rents on socio-economic development from 2002 to 2017. Nigeria and Norway have been chosen as reference countries due to their abundance of natural resources by similar economic performance, while the ranking in the Human Development Index differs significantly. As the Human Development Index provides insight into a country's cultural and socio-economic characteristics and development in addition to economic indicators, it allows a comparison of the two countries. This paper found out in a holistic perspective that (not or poorly managed) resource wealth in itself has a negative impact on socio-economic development and significantly reduces the productivity of the citizens of a state. In particular, the topic presented is interwoven in an interdisciplinary way with economic psychological models, which are underpinned within the models with content from leading scholars in the field. The pace of change in companies is accelerating, as is technological change in our society. Adaptations of the corporate structure, but also of management techniques and tasks, are therefore indispensable. This includes not only the right approaches to employee motivation, but also the correct use of intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors. Based on the hypothesis put forward by the scientist and researcher Rollinson in his book "Organisational behaviour and analysis" that managers believe motivational resources are available at all times, socio-economic and economic psychological theories are contrasted here in order to critically examine this statement. In addition, a fictitious company was created as a model for this work in order to illustrate the effects of motivational deficits in practice. In this context, the theories presented are applied to concrete problems within the model and conclusions are drawn about their influence and applicability. This led to the conclusion that motivation is a very individual challenge for each employee, which requires adapted and personalised approaches. On the other hand, the recommendations for action for supervisors in the case of motivation deficits also cannot be answered in a blanket manner, but can only be solved with the help of professional, expert-supported processing due to the economic-psychological realities of motivation. Identifying, analysing and remedying individual employee motivation deficits is, according to the authors, a problem and a challenge of great importance, especially in the context of rapidly changing ecosystems in modern companies, as motivation also influences other factors such as individual productivity. The authors therefore conclude that good motivation through the individual and customised promotion and further training of employees is an important point for achieving important corporate goals in order to remain competitive on the one hand and to create a productive and pleasant working environment on the other.}, language = {en} } @article{BiewendtBlaschkeBoehnert2021, author = {Biewendt, Marcel and Blaschke, Florian and B{\"o}hnert, Arno}, title = {A review of contemporary challenges in business culture}, series = {International Journal of Applied Research in Business and Management}, volume = {2}, journal = {International Journal of Applied Research in Business and Management}, number = {1}, publisher = {Wohllebe \& Ross Publishing}, address = {Hamburg}, issn = {2700-8983}, doi = {10.51137/ijarbm.2021.2.1.1}, pages = {1 -- 12}, year = {2021}, abstract = {The following article deals with the basic principles of intercultural management and possible improvements in terms of cultural, ethnic and gender diversification. First, a systematic literature review is carried out to outline (current) scientific models and theories. Research Question 1 follows with a mathematical introduction of the rebound effect, which shows the interdependence of consumer behaviour, technological progress, and interwoven effects for both. Thereupon, the research field is analysed for gaps and limitations by a systematic literature review. To ensure quantitative and qualitative results, a review protocol is used that integrates two different stages and covers all relevant publications released between 2000 and 2019. Accordingly, 392 publications were identified that deal with the rebound effect. These papers were reviewed to obtain relevant information on the two research questions. The literature review shows that research on the rebound effect is not yet comprehensive and focuses mainly on the effect itself rather than solutions to avoid it. Research Question 2 finds that the main gap, and thus the limitations, is that not much research has been published on the actual avoidance of the rebound effect yet. This is a major limitation for practical application by decision-makers and politicians. Therefore, a theoretical analysis was carried out to identify potential theories and ideas to avoid the rebound effect. In fact, Corporate Sustainability on the surface could seem to contradict the idea, which supports the understanding that it encourages the reduction of the heavy reliance on the use of natural resources, the overall environmental impact, and above all, their protection. To understand how the contradictory notion of CS came about, in this part of the paper, the emphasis is placed on providing useful insight to this regard. The first part of this paper summarizes various definitions, organizational theories, and measures used for CS and its derivatives like green controlling, IT, and manufacturing. Second, a case study is given that combines the aforementioned sustainability models. In addition to evaluating the hypothesis, the overarching objective of this paper is to demonstrate the use of green controlling, IT, and manufacturing in the corporate sector. Furthermore, this paper outlines the current challenges and possible directions for CS in the future.}, language = {en} } @article{BiewendtBoehnertBlaschke2020, author = {Biewendt, Marcel and B{\"o}hnert, Arno and Blaschke, Florian}, title = {The repercussions of the digital twin in the automotive industry on the new marketing logic}, series = {European Journal of Marketing and Economics}, volume = {4}, journal = {European Journal of Marketing and Economics}, number = {1}, publisher = {Revistia}, address = {London}, issn = {2601-8659}, doi = {10.26417/229eim64f}, pages = {68 -- 73}, year = {2020}, abstract = {Rapid development of virtual and data acquisition technology makes Digital Twin Technology (DT) one of the fundamental areas of research, while DT is one of the most promissory developments for the achievement of Industry 4.0. 48\% percent of organisations implementing the Internet of Things are already using DT or plan to use DT in 2020. Recently, large language models for the German language (such as GBERT and GPT-2-Wechsel) have become available, allowing to develop Deep Learning based approaches that promise to further improve automatic readability assessment. In this contribution, we studied the ability of ensembles of fine-tuned GBERT and GPT-2-Wechsel models to reliably predict the readability of German sentences. We combined these models with linguistic features and investigated the dependence of prediction performance on ensemble size and composition. Mixed ensembles of GBERT and GPT-2-Wechsel performed better than ensembles of the same size consisting of only GBERT or GPT-2-Wechsel models. They show a thermal optimal circular ring width of nearly zero. Hydraulically optimal is an inner to outer pipe radius ratio of 0.65 for turbulent and 0.68 for laminar fow types. In contrast, in this study, fow conditions in the circular ring are kept constant (a set of fxed Reynolds numbers) during optimization. This approach ensures fxed fow conditions and prevents inappropriately high or low mass fow rates. The optimization is carried out for three objectives: Maximum energy gain, minimum hydraulic efort and eventually optimum net-exergy balance. The optimization changes the inner pipe radius and mass fow rate but not the Reynolds number of the circular ring. The thermal calculations base on Hellstr{\"o}m's borehole resistance and the hydraulic optimization on individually calculated linear loss of head coefcients. Increasing the inner pipe radius results in decreased hydraulic losses in the inner pipe but increased losses in the circular ring. The net-exergy diference is a key performance indicator and combines thermal and hydraulic calculations. It is the difference between thermal exergy fux and hydraulic efort. The Reynolds number in the circular ring is instead of the mass fow rate constant during all optimizations. The result from a thermal perspective is an optimal width of the circular ring of nearly zero. The hydraulically optimal inner pipe radius is 54\% of the outer pipe radius for laminar fow and 60\% for turbulent fow scenarios. Net-exergetic optimization shows a predominant infuence of hydraulic losses, especially for small temperature gains. The exact result depends on the earth's thermal properties and the fow type. Conclusively, coaxial geothermal probes' design should focus on the hydraulic optimum and take the thermal optimum as a secondary criterion due to the dominating hydraulics.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{BlankeSchmidtGoettscheetal.2022, author = {Blanke, Tobias and Schmidt, Katharina S. and G{\"o}ttsche, Joachim and D{\"o}ring, Bernd and Frisch, J{\´e}r{\^o}me and van Treeck, Christoph}, title = {Time series aggregation for energy system design: review and extension of modelling seasonal storages}, series = {Energy Informatics}, volume = {5}, booktitle = {Energy Informatics}, number = {1, Article number: 17}, editor = {Weidlich, Anke and Neumann, Dirk and Gust, Gunther and Staudt, Philipp and Sch{\"a}fer, Mirko}, publisher = {Springer Nature}, issn = {2520-8942}, doi = {10.1186/s42162-022-00208-5}, pages = {14 Seiten}, year = {2022}, abstract = {Using optimization to design a renewable energy system has become a computationally demanding task as the high temporal fluctuations of demand and supply arise within the considered time series. The aggregation of typical operation periods has become a popular method to reduce effort. These operation periods are modelled independently and cannot interact in most cases. Consequently, seasonal storage is not reproducible. This inability can lead to a significant error, especially for energy systems with a high share of fluctuating renewable energy. The previous paper, "Time series aggregation for energy system design: Modeling seasonal storage", has developed a seasonal storage model to address this issue. Simultaneously, the paper "Optimal design of multi-energy systems with seasonal storage" has developed a different approach. This paper aims to review these models and extend the first model. The analysis of such matrices sometimes represents a challenging task. Using Aloe vera (A. vera) plant materials as an example, the performance of several spectro-scopic methods (80 MHz benchtop NMR, NIR, ATR-FTIR and UV-vis) for the simultaneous analysis of quality parameters of this plant material was compared. The determined parameters include (poly)saccharides such as aloverose, fructose and glucose as well as organic acids (malic, lactic, citric, isocitric, acetic, fumaric, benzoic and sorbic acids). 500 MHz NMR and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used as the reference methods. UV-vis data can be used only for identification of added preservatives (benzoic and sorbic acids) and drying agent (maltodextrin) and semiquantitative analysis of malic acid. NIR and MIR spectroscopies combined with multivariate regression can deliver more informative overview of A. vera extracts being able to additionally quantify glucose, aloverose, citric, isocitric, malic, lactic acids and fructose. Low-field NMR measurements can be used for the quantification of aloverose, glucose, malic, lactic, acetic, and benzoic acids. The benchtop NMR method was successfully validated in terms of robustness, stability, precision, reproducibility and limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ), respectively. All spectroscopic techniques are useful for the screening of (poly)saccharides and organic acids in plant extracts and should be applied according to its availability as well as information and confidence required for the specific analytical goal. The aim of this paper is to analyse and comparatively classify the resource consumption (land use, renewable energy and water) and costs of possible DAC implementation pathways for Germany. The paths are based on a selected, existing climate neutrality scenario that requires the removal of 20 Mt of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year by DACCS from 2045. The analysis focuses on the so-called "low-temperature" DAC process, which might be more advantageous for Germany than the "high-temperature" one. In four case studies, we examine potential sites in northern, central and southern Germany, thereby using the most suitable renewable energies for electricity and heat generation. We show that the deployment of DAC results in large-scale land use and high energy needs. The land use in the range of 167-353 km2 results mainly from the area required for renewable energy generation. The total electrical energy demand of 14.4 TWh per year, of which 46\% is needed to operate heat pumps to supply the heat demand of the DAC process, corresponds to around 1.4\% of Germany's envisaged electricity demand in 2045. 20 Mt of water are provided yearly, corresponding to 40\% of the city of Cologne's water demand (1.1 million inhabitants). The capture of CO2 (DAC) incurs levelised costs of 125-138 EUR per tonne of CO2, whereby the provision of the required energy via photovoltaics in southern Germany represents the lowest value of the four case studies. This does not include the costs associated with balancing its volatility. Taking into account transporting the CO2 via pipeline to the port of Wilhelmshaven, followed by transporting and sequestering the CO2 in geological storage sites in the Norwegian North Sea (DACCS), the levelised costs increase to 161-176 EUR/tCO2. Due to the longer transport distances from southern and central Germany, a northern German site using wind turbines would be the most favourable.}, language = {en} } @article{Blome1994, author = {Blome, Hans-Joachim}, title = {The scale of the universe: a unit of length}, series = {Comments on astrophysics. 17 (1994)}, journal = {Comments on astrophysics. 17 (1994)}, isbn = {0146-2970}, pages = {327 -- 335}, year = {1994}, language = {en} } @article{BlomeChiconeHehletal.2010, author = {Blome, Hans-Joachim and Chicone, Carmen and Hehl, Friedrich W. and Mashhoon, Bahram}, title = {Nonlocal modification of Newtonian gravity}, series = {Physical Review D}, volume = {81}, journal = {Physical Review D}, number = {6}, isbn = {0556-2821}, pages = {065020}, year = {2010}, language = {en} } @article{BlomeChuHoelletal.1988, author = {Blome, Hans-Joachim and Chu, Y. and Hoell, J and Priester, W.}, title = {On the observational discrimination of Friedmann-Lema{\^i}tre models}, series = {Large Scale Structures of the Universe: Proceedings of the 130th Symposium of the International Astronomical Union, dedicated to the memory of Marc A.
