Architectural remodeling of the gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscle is typically observed in the affected leg and may compensate force deficits caused by a longer tendon. Yet patients seem to retain functional limitations during—low-force—walking gait. To explore the potential limits imposed by the remodeled GM muscle-tendon unit (MTU) on walking gait, we examined the contractile behavior of muscle fascicles during the stance phase. In a cross-sectional design, we studied nine former patients (males; age: 45 ± 9 years; height: 180 ± 7 cm; weight: 83 ± 6 kg) with a history of complete unilateral ATR, approximately 4 years post-surgery. Using ultrasonography, GM tendon morphology, muscle architecture at rest, and fascicular behavior were assessed during walking at 1.5 m⋅s-1 on a treadmill. Walking patterns were recorded with a motion capture system. The unaffected leg served as control. Lower limbs kinematics were largely similar between legs during walking. Typical features of ATR-related MTU remodeling were observed during the stance sub-phases corresponding to series elastic element (SEE) lengthening (energy storage) and SEE shortening (energy release), with shorter GM fascicles (36 and 36\%, respectively) and greater pennation angles (8° and 12°, respectively). However, relative to the optimal fascicle length for force production, fascicles operated at comparable length in both legs. Similarly, when expressed relative to optimal fascicle length, fascicle contraction velocity was not different between sides, except at the time-point of peak series elastic element (SEE) length, where it was 39 ± 49\% lower in the affected leg. Concomitantly, fascicles rotation during contraction was greater in the affected leg during the whole stance-phase, and architectural gear ratios (AGR) was larger during SEE lengthening. Under the present testing conditions, former ATR patients had recovered a relatively symmetrical walking gait pattern. Differences in seen AGR seem to accommodate the profound changes in MTU architecture, limiting the required fascicle shortening velocity. Overall, the contractile behavior of the GM fascicles does not restrict length- or velocity-dependent force potentials during this locomotor task.}, language = {en} } @article{KotliarHauserOrtneretal.2017, author = {Kotliar, Konstantin and Hauser, Christine and Ortner, Marion and Muggenthaler, Claudia and Diehl-Schmid, Janine and Angermann, Susanne and Hapfelmeier, Alexander and Schmaderer, Christoph and Grimmer, Timo}, title = {Altered neurovascular coupling as measured by optical imaging: a biomarker for Alzheimer's disease}, series = {Scientific Reports}, volume = {7}, journal = {Scientific Reports}, number = {1}, publisher = {Springer Nature}, address = {Cham}, issn = {2045-2322}, doi = {10.1038/s41598-017-13349-5}, pages = {1 -- 11}, year = {2017}, language = {en} } @article{KotliarOrtnerConradietal.2022, author = {Kotliar, Konstantin and Ortner, Marion and Conradi, Anna and Hacker, Patricia and Hauser, Christine and G{\"u}nthner, Roman and Moser, Michaela and Muggenthaler, Claudia and Diehl-Schmid, Janine and Priller, Josef and Schmaderer, Christoph and Grimmer, Timo}, title = {Altered retinal cerebral vessel oscillation frequencies in Alzheimer's disease compatible with impaired amyloid clearance}, series = {Neurobiology of Aging}, volume = {120}, journal = {Neurobiology of Aging}, publisher = {Elsevier}, address = {Amsterdam}, issn = {0197-4580}, doi = {10.1016/j.neurobiolaging.2022.08.012}, pages = {117 -- 127}, year = {2022}, abstract = {Retinal vessels are similar to cerebral vessels in their structure and function. Moderately low oscillation frequencies of around 0.1 Hz have been reported as the driving force for paravascular drainage in gray matter in mice and are known as the frequencies of lymphatic vessels in humans. We aimed to elucidate whether retinal vessel oscillations are altered in Alzheimer's disease (AD) at the stage of dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Seventeen patients with mild-to-moderate dementia due to AD (ADD); 23 patients with MCI due to AD, and 18 cognitively healthy controls (HC) were examined using Dynamic Retinal Vessel Analyzer. Oscillatory temporal changes of retinal vessel diameters were evaluated using mathematical signal analysis. Especially at moderately low frequencies around 0.1 Hz, arterial oscillations in ADD and MCI significantly prevailed over HC oscillations and correlated with disease severity. The pronounced retinal arterial vasomotion at moderately low frequencies in the ADD and MCI groups would be compatible with the view of a compensatory upregulation of paravascular drainage in AD and strengthen the amyloid clearance hypothesis.}, language = {en} } @article{LopesLeandroCarvalhoetal.2017, author = {Lopes, Pedro and Leandro, Jorge and Carvalho, Rita F. and Bung, Daniel B.}, title = {Alternating skimming flow over a stepped spillway}, series = {Environmental Fluid Mechanics}, volume = {17}, journal = {Environmental Fluid Mechanics}, number = {2}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Berlin}, issn = {1573-1510}, doi = {10.1007/s10652-016-9484-x}, pages = {303 -- 322}, year = {2017}, language = {en} } @incollection{WolffSeefeldtBaueretal.2014, author = {Wolff, Nino and Seefeldt, Patric and Bauer, Wolfgang and Fiebig, Christopher and Gerding, Patrick and Parow-Souchon, Kai and Pongs, Anna and Reiffenrath, Matti and Ziemann, Thomas}, title = {Alternative application of solar sail technology}, series = {Advances in solar sailing}, booktitle = {Advances in solar sailing}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Berlin}, isbn = {978-3-642-34906-5 (Print) ; 978-3-642-34907-2 (E-Book)}, doi = {10.1007/978-3-642-34907-2_23}, pages = {351 -- 365}, year = {2014}, abstract = {The development of Gossamer sail structures for solar sails contributes to a large field of future space applications like thin film solar generators, membrane antennas and drag sails. The PMEIS sensor is, in principle, capable to detect any changes in bulk, surface and interface properties of the polymer induced by degradation processes. A faster degradation has been observed for PDLLA films exposed to alkaline solutions (pH 9, pH 11 and pH 13).}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{GoemmelKobNiendorfetal.2009, author = {G{\"o}mmel, Andreas and Kob, Malte and Niendorf, Thoralf and Butenweg, Christoph}, title = {An approach for numerical calculation of glottal flow during glottal closure}, series = {Proceedings / NAG/DAGA 2009, International Conference on Acoustics : Rotterdam, 23 - 26 March 2009 ; [including the 35th German Annual Conference on Acoustics (DAGA)] / [organisers: Acoustical Society of the Netherlands (NAG); German Acoustical Society (DEGA) ...]. The test and validation of ADAS/AD with real test drives, although important, involves huge costs and time. Simulation tools provide an alternative with the added advantage of reproducibility but often use ideal sensors, which do not reflect real sensor output accurately. This paper presents a new validation methodology using fault injection, as recommended by the ISO 26262 standard, to test software and system robustness. In our work, we investigated and developed a tool capable of inserting faults at different software and system levels to verify its robustness. The scope of this paper is to cover the fault injection test for the Visteon's DriveCore™ system, a centralized domain controller for Autonomous driving which is sensor agnostic and SoC agnostic. With this new approach, the validation of safety monitoring functionality and its behavior can be tested using real-world data instead of synthetic data from simulation tools resulting in having better confidence in system performance before proceeding with in-vehicle testing.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{PfaffLarkowskiBurnham2010, author = {Pfaff, Raphael and Larkowski, Tomasz and Burnham, Keith J.}, title = {An approach to adaptive control in the behavioural framework}, series = {UKACC International Conference on Control 2010 (CONTROL 2010) : Coventry, United Kingdom, 7 - 10 September 2010 ; Vol. 2. In this work, we present a new simple design for an array of on-chip integrated, individually electrically addressable EISCAPs with an additional control gate (CG-EISCAP). The existence of the CG enables an addressable activation or deactivation of on-chip integrated individual CG-EISCAPs by simple electrical switching the CG of each sensor in various setups, and makes the new design capable for multianalyte detection without cross-talk effects between the sensors in the array. The new designed CG-EISCAP chip was modelled in so-called floating/short-circuited and floating/capacitively-coupled setups, and the corresponding electrical equivalent circuits were developed. In addition, the capacitance-voltage curves of the CG-EISCAP chip in different setups were simulated and compared with that of a single EISCAP sensor. Moreover, the sensitivity of the CG-EISCAP chip to surface potential changes induced by biochemical reactions was simulated and an impact of different parameters, such as gate voltage, insulator thickness and doping concentration in Si, on the sensitivity has been discussed.}, language = {en} } @article{SpiessWilfriedAlvarezetal.2011, author = {Spiess, Elmar and Wilfried, Reichardt and Alvarez, Gerardo and Gottrup, Marcus and {\"O}hlschl{\"a}ger, Peter}, title = {An Artificial PAP Gene Breaks Self-tolerance and Promotes Tumor Regression in the TRAMP Model for Prostate Carcinoma}, series = {Molecular Therapy}, volume = {20}, journal = {Molecular Therapy}, number = {3}, publisher = {Elsevier}, address = {Amsterdam}, isbn = {1525-0016}, pages = {555 -- 564}, year = {2011}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{TippkoetterRoikaewUlber2008, author = {Tippk{\"o}tter, Nils and Roikaew, W. and Ulber, R.}, title = {An automated pilot plant for the bioengineering processing of concentrated whey}, series = {European BioPerspectives : in cooperation with BIOTECHNICA 2008 : 7 - 9 October 2008 Hannover, Germany ; book of abstracts ; abstracts, poster programme}, booktitle = {European BioPerspectives : in cooperation with BIOTECHNICA 2008 : 7 - 9 October 2008 Hannover, Germany ; book of abstracts ; abstracts, poster programme}, publisher = {Dechema}, address = {Frankfurt am Main}, pages = {98}, year = {2008}, language = {en} } @article{Hirschberg2002, author = {Hirschberg, Rainer}, title = {An die {\"U}bergabe gekoppelt.
