  abstract  = {b-Lactame geh{\"o}ren zu den wirkungsvollsten Antibiotika, jedoch lassen sich viele nur schwierig fermentativ erzeugen. Ein Problem bei der fermentativen Produktion ist die Hydrolyse des Lactamrings im w{\"a}ssrigen Milieu. Das Ziel des von der DBU gef{\"o}rderten Projekts ist die selektive In-situ-Adsorption der b-Lactamantibiotika unter anschließender magnetischer Separation. Durch die Isolation im Hochgradientenmagnetseparator (HGMS) ist eine Fest-fest-fl{\"u}ssig-Trennung und somit ein erheblicher Zeitgewinn im Downstreamprozess m{\"o}glich. Zus{\"a}tzlich kommt es zur Einsparung an L{\"o}sungsmittel und Energie, was neben Reduzierung der Antibiotikahydrolyse auch in {\"o}kologischer Hinsicht einen interessanten Aspekt darstellt. Als Tr{\"a}germaterial f{\"u}r die Adsorbermatrix werden magnetisierbare Eisenoxidpartikel eingesetzt, die in einer Silikamatrix eingebettet sind. Diese Adsorber sollen auf Selektivit{\"a}t in Wasser und verschiedenen Medien getestet werden. Zus{\"a}tzlich werden die Abbauprodukte des b-Lactams analysiert, um eine Aussage {\"u}ber die Stabilisierung des Antibiotikums durch die selektiven Adsorber treffen zu k{\"o}nnen. Diese Ergebnisse werden mit kommerziell erh{\"a}ltlichen Adsorbern verglichen. Die Aufreinigung der Antibiotika soll direkt aus der Fermentationsbr{\"u}he erfolgen. Um die Trennung der magnetischen, selektiven Adsorber von der Biomasse zu gew{\"a}hrleisten, soll der HGMS in die Fermentation integriert werden. Das filament{\"o}se Wachstum des Mikroorganismus erfordert eine Neuauslegung der Filtermatrix.},

  abstract  = {An increasing number of studies have reported on forest declines and vegetation shifts triggered by drought. In the Swiss Rhone valley (Valais), one of the driest inner-Alpine regions, the species composition in low elevation forests is changing: The sub-boreal Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) dominating the dry forests is showing high mortality rates. Concurrently the sub-Mediterranean pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens Willd.) has locally increased in abundance. However, it remains unclear whether this local change in species composition is part of a larger-scale vegetation shift. To study variability in mortality and regeneration in these dry forests we analysed data from the Swiss national forest inventory (NFI) on a regular grid between 1983 and 2003, and combined it with annual mortality data from a monitoring site. Pine mortality was found to be highest at low elevation (below 1000 m a.s.l.). Annual variation in pine mortality was correlated with a drought index computed for the summer months prior to observed tree death. A generalized linear mixed-effects model indicated for the NFI data increased pine mortality on dryer sites with high stand competition, particularly for small-diameter trees. Pine regeneration was low in comparison to its occurrence in the overstorey, whereas oak regeneration was comparably abundant. Although both species regenerated well at dry sites, pine regeneration was favoured at cooler sites at higher altitude and oak regeneration was more frequent at warmer sites, indicating a higher adaptation potential of oaks under future warming. Our results thus suggest that an extended shift in species composition is actually occurring in the pine forests in the Valais. The main driving factors are found to be climatic variability, particularly drought, and variability in stand structure and topography. Thus, pine forests at low elevations are developing into oak forests with unknown consequences for these ecosystems and their goods and services.},

  abstract  = {Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) have shown to be promising in disease studies and drug screenings [1]. Cardiomyocytes derived from hiPSCs have been extensively investigated using patch-clamping and optical methods to compare their electromechanical behaviour relative to fully matured adult cells. Mathematical models can be used for translating findings on hiPSCCMs to adult cells [2] or to better understand the mechanisms of various ion channels when a drug is applied [3,4]. Paci et al. (2013) [3] developed the first model of hiPSC-CMs, which they later refined based on new data [3]. The model is based on iCells® (Fujifilm Cellular Dynamics, Inc. (FCDI), Madison WI, USA) but major differences among several cell lines and even within a single cell line have been found and motivate an approach for creating sample-specific models. We have developed an optimisation algorithm that parameterises the conductances (in S/F=Siemens/Farad) of the latest Paci et al. model (2018) [5] using current-voltage data obtained in individual patch-clamp experiments derived from an automated patch clamp system (Patchliner, Nanion Technologies GmbH, Munich).},

  abstract  = {In addition to electromobility and alternative drive systems, a focus is set on electrically driven compressors (EDC), with a high potential for increasing the efficiency of internal combustion engines (ICE) and fuel cells [01]. The primary objective is to increase the ICE torque, provided independently of the ICE speed by compressing the intake air and consequently the ICE filling level supported by the compressor. For operation independent from the ICE speed, the EDC compressor is decoupled from the turbine by using an electric compressor motor (CM) instead of the turbine. ICE performances can be increased by the use of EDC where individual compressor parameters are adapted to the respective application area [02] [03]. This task contains great challenges, increased by demands with regard to pollutant reduction while maintaining constant performance and reduced fuel consumption. The FH-Aachen is equipped with an EDC test bench which enables EDC-investigations in various configurations and operating modes. Characteristic properties of different compressors can be determined, which build the basis for a comparison methodology. Subject of this project is the development of a comparison methodology for EDC with an associated evaluation method and a defined overall evaluation method. For the application of this comparison methodology, corresponding series of measurements are carried out on the EDC test bench using an appropriate test device.},

  abstract  = {In this work, a cell-based biosensor to evaluate the sterilization efficacy of hydrogen peroxide vapor sterilization processes is characterized. The transducer of the biosensor is based on interdigitated gold electrodes fabricated on an inert glass substrate. Impedance spectroscopy is applied to evaluate the sensor behavior and the alteration of test microorganisms due to the sterilization process. These alterations are related to changes in relative permittivity and electrical conductivity of the bacterial spores. Sensor measurements are conducted with and without bacterial spores (Bacillus atrophaeus), as well as after an industrial sterilization protocol. Equivalent two-dimensional numerical models based on finite element method of the periodic finger structures of the interdigitated gold electrodes are designed and validated using COMSOL® Multiphysics software by the application of known dielectric properties. The validated models are used to compute the electrical properties at different sensor states (blank, loaded with spores, and after sterilization). As a final result, we will derive and tabulate the frequency-dependent electrical parameters of the spore layer using a novel model that combines experimental data with numerical optimization techniques.},

  abstract  = {Today's society is undergoing a paradigm shift driven by the megatrend of sustainability. This undeniably affects all areas of Western life. This paper aims to find out how the luxury industry is dealing with this change and what adjustments are made by the companies. For this purpose, interviews were conducted with managers from the luxury industry, in which they were asked about specific measures taken by their companies as well as trends in the industry. In a subsequent evaluation, the trends in the luxury industry were summarized for the areas of ecological, social, and economic sustainability. It was found that the area of environmental sustainability is significantly more focused than the other sub-areas. Furthermore, the need for a customer survey to validate the industry-based measures was identified.},

  abstract  = {This paper considers a paired data framework and discusses the question of marginal homogeneity of bivariate high-dimensional or functional data. The related testing problem can be endowed into a more general setting for paired random variables taking values in a general Hilbert space. To address this problem, a Cram{\´e}r-von-Mises type test statistic is applied and a bootstrap procedure is suggested to obtain critical values and finally a consistent test. The desired properties of a bootstrap test can be derived that are asymptotic exactness under the null hypothesis and consistency under alternatives. Simulations show the quality of the test in the finite sample case. A possible application is the comparison of two possibly dependent stock market returns based on functional data. The approach is demonstrated based on historical data for different stock market indices.},

  abstract  = {Mikrobielle Verunreinigungen von Oberfl{\"a}chen in technischen und medizinischen Systemen sind allgegenw{\"a}rtig. Sie basieren {\"u}blicherweise auf adsorptiven Oberfl{\"a}chenbindungen organischer Komponenten (Proteine und Fette) oder Membrankomponenten aerogener sowie wassergebundener Mikroorganismen. In laufenden Forschungsarbeiten wird eine aktive sowie passive Biomodifikation von Oberfl{\"a}chen zu deren Schutz vor Adsorption von Proteinen und Mikroorganismen verfolgt. Der antimikrobielle Schutz soll dabei sowohl durch die Mikrostrukturierung bzw. Rauheitsanpassung der Oberfl{\"a}chen durch deren Beschichtung mit Mikro-und Nanopartikeln erfolgen. Ferner werden antimikrobielle Enzyme und funktionelle Gruppen auf den Mikropartikeln gebunden, um den Oberfl{\"a}chenschutz zu verst{\"a}rken. In ersten Versuchen wurden quart{\"a}re Ammoniumverbindungen auf eigens synthetisierten superparamagnetischen Eisenoxid-Nanopartikeln (Durchmesser 10 - 30 nm) immobilisiert und die wachstumshemmende Wirkung untersucht. Erste Ergebnisse zeigten, dass eine Konzentration von 10 mg mL⁻¹ der Ammoniumverbindung in einer Wachstumshemmung des verwendeten Gram-negativen Modell-Mikroorganismus E. coli GFPmut2 resultiert. Zurzeit werden synergistisch wirkende Kombinationen von Partikeln mit Proteasen, quart{\"a}ren Ammoniumverbindungen, hydrophoben Oberfl{\"a}chen und mikrostrukturierten Oberfl{\"a}chen als antimikrobieller Schutz untersucht.},

  abstract  = {Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a biopolymer produced by different microorganisms, but in biotechnological practice, Komagataeibacter xylinus is used. The micro- and nanofibrillar structure of BC, which forms many different-sized pores, creates prerequisites for the introduction of other polymers into it, including those synthesized by other microorganisms. The study aims to develop a cocultivation system of BC and prebiotic producers to obtain BC-based composite material with prebiotic activity. In this study, pullulan (PUL) was found to stimulate the growth of the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG better than the other microbial polysaccharides gellan and xanthan. BC/PUL biocomposite with prebiotic properties was obtained by cocultivation of Komagataeibacter xylinus and Aureobasidium pullulans, BC and PUL producers respectively, on molasses medium. The inclusion of PUL in BC is proved gravimetrically by scanning electron microscopy and by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. Cocultivation demonstrated a composite effect on the aggregation and binding of BC fibers, which led to a significant improvement in mechanical properties. The developed approach for "grafting" of prebiotic activity on BC allows preparation of environmentally friendly composites of better quality.},

  abstract  = {The following article deals with the basic principles of intercultural management and possible improvements in terms of cultural, ethnic and gender diversification. The results are exemplarily applied to a bank located in Germany. The aim of this paper is to find out to what extent intercultural management could improve the productivity of Relatos-Bank in dealing with foreign employees or employees with a different cultural background. To achieve this goal, the authors con-duct a literature research. The main sources of information are books, journal articles and internet sources. It becomes clear that especially the different perceptions of different generations have a potential for conflict, which can be counteracted by applying presented scientific models. Equalizing the salaries of female and male employees and equalizing the rights and distribution of power could also be the key to becoming an open-minded, dynamic and fair organization that is pre-pared for the rapidly changing environment in which it operates.},

  abstract  = {Breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) is expressed in various tissues, such as the gut, liver, kidney and blood brain barrier (BBB), where it mediates the unidirectional transport of substrates to the apical/luminal side of polarized cells. Thereby BCRP acts as an efflux pump, mediating the elimination or restricting the entry of endogenous compounds or xenobiotics into tissues and it plays important roles in drug disposition, efficacy and safety. Bcrp knockout mice (Bcrp-/-) have been used widely to study the role of this transporter in limiting intestinal absorption and brain penetration of substrate compounds. Here we describe the first generation and characterization of a mouse line humanized for BCRP (hBCRP), in which the mouse coding sequence from the start to stop codon was replaced with the corresponding human genomic region, such that the human transporter is expressed under control of the murine Bcrp promoter. We demonstrate robust human and loss of mouse BCRP/Bcrp mRNA and protein expression in the hBCRP mice and the absence of major compensatory changes in the expression of other genes involved in drug metabolism and disposition. Pharmacokinetic and brain distribution studies with several BCRP probe substrates confirmed the functional activity of the human transporter in these mice. Furthermore, we provide practical examples for the use of hBCRP mice to study drug-drug interactions (DDIs). The hBCRP mouse is a promising model to study the in vivo role of human BCRP in limiting absorption and BBB penetration of substrate compounds and to investigate clinically relevant DDIs involving BCRP.},

  abstract  = {In der Reihe der nachwachsenden Rohstoffe besitzt Holz als erneuerbare und umweltfreundliche Ressource ein großes Potenzial. {\"U}ber 11 Mio. ha Holz, das laut der Fachagentur f{\"u}r nachwachsende Rohstoffe (FNR) auch f{\"u}r industrielle Zwecke genutzt werden kann, wuchsen im Jahr 2013 allein auf bundesdeutscher Fl{\"a}che. 56,8 Mio. m³ j{\"a}hrlicher Holzeinschlag in den letzten zehn Jahren wurde zu knapp der H{\"a}lfte stofflich und der Rest energetisch verwertet. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit konnte auf der Basis vom Holz der Buche, die nach Fichte und Kiefer die dritth{\"a}ufigste Baumart in Deutschland ist und 15\% der deutschen Waldfl{\"a}che ausmacht, die Fraktionierung der polymeren Hauptbestandteile mit niedrigem energetischen Einsatz erreicht werden. Hierbei werden in einem nachgeschalteten Extraktionsprozess die beiden Komponenten Hemicellulose und Lignin in fl{\"u}ssiger Form von der finalen festen Cellulosefraktion abgetrennt. Die Extraktion der Hemicellulose erfolgt durch eine Liquid Hot Water (LHW)-Behandlung. Untersucht wird der katalytische Zusatz anorganischer S{\"a}uren wie H₃PO₄ und H₂SO₄. Im Hinblick auf die weitere Verwertung von Lignin zu aromatischen Synthesebausteinen kommt die Organosolv-Extraktion mit einem Ethanol/Wasser-Gemisch zum Einsatz. Von Vorteil ist die weitere Verwendung beider Stoffstr{\"o}me ohne F{\"a}llungsschritt und nachteiliger Verd{\"u}nnung der Hemicellulose.},

  abstract  = {A stabilized version of the fundamental solution method to catch ill-conditioning effects is investigated with focus on the computation of complex-valued elastic interior transmission eigenvalues in two dimensions for homogeneous and isotropic media. Its algorithm can be implemented very shortly and adopts to many similar partial differential equation-based eigenproblems as long as the underlying fundamental solution function can be easily generated. We develop a corroborative approximation analysis which also implicates new basic results for transmission eigenfunctions and present some numerical examples which together prove successful feasibility of our eigenvalue recovery approach.},

  abstract  = {Hypertension describes the pathological increase of blood pressure, which is most commonly associated with the increase of vascular wall stiffness [1]. Referring to the "Deutsche Bluthochdruck Liga" this pathology shows a growing trend in our aging society. In order to find novel pharmacological and probably personalized treatments, we want to present a functional approach to study biomechanical properties of a human aortic vascular model. In this method review we will give an overview of recent studies which were carried out with the CellDrum technology [2] and underline the added value to already existing standard procedures known from the field of physiology. Herein described CellDrum technology is a system to measure functional mechanical properties of cell monolayers and thin tissue constructs in-vitro. Additionally, the CellDrum enables to elucidate the mechanical response of cells to pharmacological drugs, toxins and vasoactive agents. Due to its highly flexible polymer support, cells can also be mechanically stimulated by steady and cyclic biaxial stretching.},
