Durch die Verbindung von Techniken des Grafikdesigns und der klassischen Illustration verbindet der Stil sowohl die moderne, ausdrucksstarke und sehr grafische Bildsprache mit der Eigenschaft, kreativen Interpretationsspielraum zu lassen und tiefe Emotionen zu erzeugen. Die besondere Innovation des Projekts zeigt sich durch das Konzept des illustrativen Baukastensystems, welches erm{\"o}glicht, die einzelnen Illustrationen effizient und intuitiv zu gestalten.},

Bis dato wird keine K{\"u}chenmaschine angeboten, die von blinden Menschen bedient werden kann, obwohl gerade solche Produkte den Alltag dieser Gruppe enorm vereinfachen k{\"o}nnten. „Clu." ist ein modulares K{\"u}chensystem, welches von einer App unterst{\"u}tzt wird. Die Basis besteht aus einer K{\"u}chenmaschine, die {\"u}ber Sprache und haptische Bedienelemente gesteuert wird. Durch die Anwendung des Mehr-Sinne-Prinzip, der Simplifizierung von Funktionen und der Einbindung von Smart Home Komponenten werden nicht nur Menschen mit Sehbeeintr{\"a}chtigungen profitieren. Beispielsweise funktioniert das Kochen nach Rezept nun {\"a}hnlich wie das H{\"o}ren eines H{\"o}rbuches und die User k{\"o}nnen sich dem in ihrem favorisierten Tempo annehmen. „Clu." ist ein Ansatz f{\"u}r eine neue Kategorie von Produkten, die zeigen, wie attraktiv inklusivere Produktl{\"o}sungen aussehen k{\"o}nnen.},

Umso wichtiger ist es f{\"u}r Bio-Marken wie ALNATURA, sich zu definieren, um neben innovativen, nachhaltigen Start-up-Marken noch aufzufallen. Aktuell ist ALNATURA vorwiegend aufgrund der hochwertigen Produkte sowie einer transparenten Kommunikation bekannt. Jedoch fehlt es den Produkten an einheitlichem Design mit Wiedererkennungswert. Diese Arbeit zeigt einen Ansatz f{\"u}r ein neues, zeitgem{\"a}ßes Gestaltungskonzept. Im Zuge dessen wurde das Unternehmenslogo modifiziert sowie Farben, Schrift und Gestaltungsraster neu definiert. Um das neue Image der Marke bekannt zu machen, wurde zudem eine Plakatkampagne entwickelt. Das Projekt zeigt, wie sich eine Bio-Marke weg vom {\"O}ko-Image und hin zu einer modernen Lifestyle-Marke mit Relevanz entwickeln kann.},

Der Krankheitsverlauf ist gepr{\"a}gt von pl{\"o}tzlichen, z.T. lebensbedrohlichen Verschlechterungen und Krankenhauseinweisungen, nach denen die Leistung des Herzen vermindert bleibt. Diese Dekompensationen lassen sich bisher im heimischen Umfeld nicht durch Messwerte vorhersehen. Dieses Ger{\"a}t bestimmt die Fl{\"u}ssigkeitsansammlungen in der Lunge, die ein mittelfristiges Symptom einer Dekompensation sind. Außerdem misst es {\"u}ber einen Hautsensor die im Schweiß enthaltene Menge eines Proteins, das bei {\"U}berdehnung des Herzmuskels vermehrt im Blutplasma zu finden ist. So k{\"o}nnen Dekompensationen bis zu zwei Wochen vor einem akuten Ereignis detektiert und behandelt werden. Außerdem gibt es tagesformabh{\"a}ngige Tipps f{\"u}r die Alltagsgestaltung mit der Erkrankung.},

  abstract  = {In this study, we show that synthetic sapphire (Al₂O₃), an established implant material, can also serve as a platform material for biosensors comparable to nanocrystalline diamond. Sapphire chips, beads, and powder were first modified with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES), followed by succinic anhydride (SA), and finally single-stranded probe DNA was EDC coupled to the functionalized layer. The presence of the APTES-SA layer on sapphire powders was confirmed by thermogravimetric analyis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Using planar sapphire chips as substrates and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as surface-sensitive tool, the sequence of individual layers was analyzed with respect to their chemical state, enabling the quantification of areal densities of the involved molecular units. Fluorescence microscopy was used to demonstrate the hybridization of fluorescently tagged target DNA to the probe DNA, including denaturation- and re-hybridization experiments. Due to its high thermal conductivity, synthetic sapphire is especially suitable as a chip material for the heat-transfer method, which was employed to distinguish complementary- and non-complementary DNA duplexes containing single-nucleotide polymorphisms. These results indicate that it is possible to detect mutations electronically with a chemically resilient and electrically insulating chip material.},

Die Installation wurde haupts{\"a}chlich f{\"u}r Museumsausstellungen konzipiert und besteht aus einer Wandprojektion, die durch iPads im Raum von mehreren Nutzern gleichzeitig gesteuert werden kann. Auf der Projektion sind alle 145 von Noto Sans unterst{\"u}tzten Schriftsysteme zu finden, die nach ihrer {\"o}rtlichen Entstehung auf einer Weltkarte platziert wurden. Die Arbeit beruht auf dem wissenschaftlichen Datensatz aus dem Projekt „The World's Writing Systems" aufrufbar unter www.worldswritingsystems.org. Heute bilden die epigraphisch {\"u}berlieferten Schriftzeichen eine unverzichtbare Informationsquelle f{\"u}r die Entwicklung der germanischen Sprachen. Sie stellen die Grundlage immer umfangreicherer wissenschaftlicher Studien dar. Die digitale Schriftsippe „Runica" ist als Universalrunenschrift f{\"u}r das wissenschaftliche Publizieren konzipiert. Im Rahmen dieser Masterarbeit wurde die erste Schriftfamilie der Runica zur Darstellung der Zeichen der {\"a}lteren Runenreihe (Futhark) sowie eine begleitende Publikation als Ergebnis einer umfangreichen Recherche entwickelt. Verschiede Bestandteile der Kollektion unterst{\"u}tzen bei der Forderung zur Ruhe und verringern den visuellen L{\"a}rm. Geschlossene Staur{\"a}ume sorgen f{\"u}r mehr Ordnung und Neutralit{\"a}t. Die Station bietet Komfort in der Form von Sitzfl{\"a}che und ausreichender Ablagefl{\"a}che.},

Ziel war es, diese Welt und eine dort spielende Geschichte zu erschaffen und beides visuell in einer Graphic Novel zum Leben zu erwecken. In „Traumspiel" werden Menschen unwissentlich nachts in ein Traumland entf{\"u}hrt, wo ihnen die Tr{\"a}ume als Marionettentheater vorgespielt werden. Erz{\"a}hlt wird die Geschichte eines Kindes, das auf diese Weise je einen Traum und Albtraum erlebt. Die Illustrationen sind mit Tusche gemalt. Durch die Beschr{\"a}nkung auf drei Farben werden verschiedene Aspekte der Geschichte visuell unterschieden. Entstanden ist eine Graphic Novel, in der alle konzeptionellen und gestalterischen Entscheidungen aufeinander aufbauen, um eine spannende Geschichte zu erz{\"a}hlen.},

This chapter explores the particular role of research within architectural education in general by discussing two different cases for the implementation of undergraduate research in architecture: during the late 1990s and early 2000s at the University of Sheffield, UK, and during the 2010s at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. These examples illustrate the asynchronous beginnings of similar developments, and also contextualize differences in disciplinary habitus and pedagogical approaches between Sheffield, where research impulses stemmed from within the Architectural Humanities, and Aachen with its strong tradition as a technical university.},

The study investigates the functional affordances of ECS, particularly Slack, and examines its potential as a virtual office environment for cultural development in digital startups. Through a case study and based on affordance theoretical considerations, the paper explores how ECS facilitates remote collaboration, communication, and socialization within digital startups.   abstract  = {The successful implementation and continuous development of sustainable corporate-level solutions is a challenge. These are endeavours in which social, environmental, and financial aspects must be weighed against each other. They can prove difficult to handle and, in some cases, almost unrealistic. Concepts such as green controlling, IT, and manufacturing look promising and are constantly evolving. This paper aims to achieve a better understanding of the field of corporate sustainability (CS). It will evaluate the hypothesis by which Corporate Sustainability thrives, via being efficient, increasing the performance, and raising the value of the input of the enterprises to the resources used. In fact, Corporate Sustainability on the surface could seem to contradict the idea, which supports the understanding that it encourages the reduction of the heavy reliance on the use of natural resources, the overall environmental impact, and above all, their protection. To understand how the contradictory notion of CS came about, in this part of the paper, the emphasis is placed on providing useful insight to this regard. The first part of this paper summarizes various definitions, organizational theories, and measures used for CS and its derivatives like green controlling, IT, and manufacturing. Second, a case study is given that combines the aforementioned sustainability models. In addition to evaluating the hypothesis, the overarching objective of this paper is to demonstrate the use of green controlling, IT, and manufacturing in the corporate sector. Furthermore, this paper outlines the current challenges and possible directions for CS in the future.},

  abstract  = {We conducted a scoping review for active learning in the domain of natural language processing (NLP), which we summarize in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines as follows: Objective: Identify active learning strategies that were proposed for entity recognition and their evaluation environments (datasets, metrics, hardware, execution time). Design: We used Scopus and ACM as our search engines. We compared the results with two literature surveys to assess the search quality. We included peer-reviewed English publications introducing or comparing active learning strategies for entity recognition. Results: We analyzed 62 relevant papers and identified 106 active learning strategies. We grouped them into three categories: exploitation-based (60x), exploration-based (14x), and hybrid strategies (32x). We found that all studies used the F1-score as an evaluation metric. Information about hardware (6x) and execution time (13x) was only occasionally included. The 62 papers used 57 different datasets to evaluate their respective strategies. Most datasets contained newspaper articles or biomedical/medical data. Our analysis revealed that 26 out of 57 datasets are publicly accessible. Conclusion: Numerous active learning strategies have been identified, along with significant open questions that still need to be addressed. Researchers and practitioners face difficulties when making data-driven decisions about which active learning strategy to adopt. Conducting comprehensive empirical comparisons using the evaluation environment proposed in this study could help establish best practices in the domain.},

  abstract  = {As researchers continue to seek the expansion of the material base for additive manufacturing, there is a need to focus attention on the Ni-Cu group of alloys which conventionally has wide industrial applications. In this work, the G-NiCu30Nb casting alloy, a variant of the Monel family of alloys with Nb and high Si content is, for the first time, processed via the laser powder bed fusion process (LPBF). Being novel to the LPBF processes, optimum LPBF parameters were determined, and hardness and tensile tests were performed in as-built conditions and after heat treatment at 1000 °C. Microstructures of the as-cast and the as-built condition were compared. Highly dense samples (99.8\% density) were achieved after varying hatch distance (80 µm and 140 µm) with scanning speed (550 mm/s-1500 mm/s). There was no significant difference in microhardness between varied hatch distance print sets. Microhardness of the as-built condition (247 HV0.2) exceeded the as-cast microhardness (179 HV0.2.). Tensile specimens built in vertical (V) and horizontal (H) orientations revealed degrees of anisotropy and were superior to conventionally reported figures. Post heat treatment increased ductility from 20\% to 31\% (V), as well as from 16\% to 25\% (H), while ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength (YS) were considerably reduced.},

The hypotheses are evaluated by applying structural equation modelling on survey data containing 127 relevant participants.   abstract  = {Architects and civil engineers work together regularly during their professional days and are irreplaceable for each other. This co-operation is sometimes made more difficult by the differences in their disciplinary languages and approaches. Structures are evaluated by architects on the basis of criteria such as spatial impact and usability, while civil engineers analyze them more closely by their bearing and deformation properties, as well as by constructive aspects. This diversity of assessment criteria and approaches is often continued in both academic disciplines in the view on structures. Within the framework of the Exploratory Teaching Space (ETS), a funding program to improve teaching at RWTH Aachen University and to promote new teaching concepts, a project was carried out jointly by the Junior Professorship of Tool-Culture at the Faculty of Architecture and the Institute of Structural Concrete at the Faculty of Civil Engineering. The aim of the project is to present buildings in such a way that the differences in perception between architects and civil engineers are reduced and the common understanding is promoted. The project develops a database, which contains a collection of striking buildings from Aachen and the surrounding area. The buildings are categorized according to terms that come from both disciplinary areas. The collection can be freely explored or crossed through learning trails. The medium of film plays a special role in presenting the buildings. The buildings are assigned to different categories of load bearing structures as linear, planar and spatial structures, and further to different types of material, functional programs and spatial characteristics. Since the buildings are located in the direct vicinity of Aachen, they can be visited by the students. This makes them more sensitive to their environment. Intrinsic motivation, as well as implicit learning is encouraged. The paper will provide a detailed report of the project, its implementation, the feedback of the students and the plans for further development.},

Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari deplore the inflationary and trivialised use of the term concept: "Finally, the most shameful moment came when computer science, marketing, design and advertising, all the disciplines of communication, seized hold of the word concept itself and said: 'This is our concern, we are the creative ones, we are the ideas men! We are the friends of the concept, we put in our computers.' " This doctoral thesis shares the concern of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, but still, it is a thesis in architecture and thus collocated within the field of the representatives of the "ideas men". It engages in architectural design theory, and refers in particular to the investigation of methodological approaches within the design process. Therefore, the thesis will not contribute to the philosophical dimension of the term, but intends to overcome its imprecise use within the architectural discourse, in compliance with Eug{\`e}ne Viollet-le-Duc's admonition relative to vague definitions: "Dans les arts, et dans l'architecture en particulier, les d{\´e}finitions vagues ont caus{\´e} bien des erreurs, ont laiss{\´e} germer bien des pr{\´e}jug{\´e}s, enraciner bien des id{\´e}es fausses. On met un mot en avant, chacun y attache un sens diff{\´e}rent." The term concept in architecture is very often used as pure marketing collateral, it serves to sell an idea, a product, a design. Its functional applicability is reduced to a special manner of illustration, produced as one of the various design presentation documents at the end of the design process. In contrast, the original contribution of this thesis aims to give a precise, instrumental dimension to the term concept: the concept is the expression of a specific logic, capable to guide the decisional sequences of the process and thus to improve the quality of the designed projects. The motivation to define a specific instrumentality of the concept is closely connected to the issue of interdisciplinarity in the architects' profession. The interdisciplinary character of the architectural field is widely accepted and discussed as such, but the thesis intends to give a more precise definition of the various kinds of competences involved by classifying them into either the internal or the external group. The traditional notion of interdisciplinarity, predominantly seen as collaboration between architects and technical experts, and, most notably, the historical, sometimes contentious, relationship between architects and engineers is described. Referring to recent developments, the transformation of the architect's role within the professional sphere, marked by an increasing importance of diverse influences and linked to a growing risk of marginalisation, is illustrated. The thesis describes different ways to adapt to this specific kind of interdisciplinarity, which generally requires the architect's ability to connect and to integrate various contents, different points of view and diverse scales. On the other hand, the big potential which is implicit in the interdisciplinary field is exposed: architects can inform their core competence, the design, by extracting contents of different disciplinary competences, pertaining or not pertaining to their own professional field. They have the possibility to cross fields of external competences in a selective way and by doing so they can build up a corpus of knowledge capable to generate and communicate guidelines and systematic methodologies for their design. At the end, the analysis of these two aspects allows the definition of a more specific professional profile of the architect as specialist of interdisciplinarity. The thesis is concerned with the theories around the design process. The design process is seen as open to inspection and critical evaluation, with major focus on the decisional sequences which characterise it. It concentrates on the process' descriptiveness and the degree of self-conscious approaches applied within it. The importance of regulative, strategic mechanisms is illustrated by testimonies taken from a series of design researches and leads to the functional definition of the figure of the concept as representation of a coherent set of ideas, as generator of a project-specific system of rules and as communicator of decisional strategies. The concept's function is furthermore defined as communicative interface which generates and transmits the system of rules authoritative for all the disciplinary competences involved in the design process, a communicative interface which constitutes a basis of shared convictions capable to increase the efficiency of collaboration. Furthermore, the concept's capacity to explore and elaborate the contents of external disciplines is identified as a possible methodological approach to innovative design thinking. The approach to a specific functional definition of the concept is continued by the description of a series of instruments that are simultaneously generating and communicating it. It is outlined to which degree the concept itself is already the result of an ideational process, collocated within the initial phase of the design proceedings, serving as a guideline to them, but still continuously evolving and adapting in its progression. In addition, it is illustrated how all the diverse instruments of the concept are operational media through which the knowledge transition between different disciplines can occur. The considerations about the concept as operational instrument of design are elaborated with regard to a number of examples of didactical applications that are particularly involved in the development and teaching of specific design methods. These examples illustrate the interrelations between design theory and design education. They are derived from very different schools of architecture and diverse mindsets, but all of them transmit models of conceptual design thinking.},

Das Projekt soll nicht nur die Erinnerungen und das kulturelle Gut bewahren, es soll auch die Familiengeschichte erforschen, die Vergangenheit verst{\"a}ndlich gestalten und die beteiligten Personen in Ehren halten.},

While success factors for non-IT start-ups have already been extensively researched, this study sheds light on digital entrepreneurs, whose business model relies primarily on services based on digital technologies. Applying the Grounded Theory method, we identify relevant environmental success factors for digital entrepreneurs. The study's research contribution is threefold. First, we provide 16 relevant and less relevant environmental success factors, which enables a comparison with prior identified factors. We found out that several prior environmental success factors, such as accessibility to transportation or the availability of land and facilities are less relevant for a digital entrepreneur. Second, we derive and discuss hypotheses for the influence of these factors on digital start-up success. Third, we present a theoretical model that lays the foundation for explaining the environmental influence on digital entrepreneurship success.},

  abstract  = {In light of emerging challenges in energy systems, markets are prone to changing dynamics and market design. Simulation models are commonly used to understand the changing dynamics of future electricity markets. However, existing market models were often created with specific use cases in mind, which limits their flexibility and usability. This can impose challenges for using a single model to compare different market designs. This paper introduces a new method of defining market designs for energy market simulations. The proposed concept makes it easy to incorporate different market designs into electricity market models by using relevant parameters derived from analyzing existing simulation tools, morphological categorization and ontologies. These parameters are then used to derive a market abstraction and integrate it into an agent-based simulation framework, allowing for a unified analysis of diverse market designs. Furthermore, we showcase the usability of integrating new types of long-term contracts and over-the-counter trading. To validate this approach, two case studies are demonstrated: a pay-as-clear market and a pay-as-bid long-term market. These examples demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed framework.},
