In the Swiss Rhone valley (Valais), one of the driest inner-Alpine regions, the species composition in low elevation forests is changing: The sub-boreal Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) dominating the dry forests is showing high mortality rates. Concurrently the sub-Mediterranean pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens Willd.) has locally increased in abundance. However, it remains unclear whether this local change in species composition is part of a larger-scale vegetation shift. To study variability in mortality and regeneration in these dry forests we analysed data from the Swiss national forest inventory (NFI) on a regular grid between 1983 and 2003, and combined it with annual mortality data from a monitoring site. Pine mortality was found to be highest at low elevation (below 1000 m a.s.l.). Annual variation in pine mortality was correlated with a drought index computed for the summer months prior to observed tree death. A generalized linear mixed-effects model indicated for the NFI data increased pine mortality on dryer sites with high stand competition, particularly for small-diameter trees. Pine regeneration was low in comparison to its occurrence in the overstorey, whereas oak regeneration was comparably abundant. Although both species regenerated well at dry sites, pine regeneration was favoured at cooler sites at higher altitude and oak regeneration was more frequent at warmer sites, indicating a higher adaptation potential of oaks under future warming. Our results thus suggest that an extended shift in species composition is actually occurring in the pine forests in the Valais. The main driving factors are found to be climatic variability, particularly drought, and variability in stand structure and topography. Thus, pine forests at low elevations are developing into oak forests with unknown consequences for these ecosystems and their goods and services.}, language = {en} } @article{HartungKesiciCatrein2011, author = {Hartung, Frank and Kesici, Sinan and Catrein, Daniel}, title = {DRM protected Dynamic Adaptive HTTP Streaming}, series = {Proceedings of the 2011 ACM Multimedia Systems Conference [Elektronische Ressource] : February 23 - 25, 2011, San Jose, CA, USA / sponsored by: ACM SIGMM}, journal = {Proceedings of the 2011 ACM Multimedia Systems Conference [Elektronische Ressource] : February 23 - 25, 2011, San Jose, CA, USA / sponsored by: ACM SIGMM}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York, NY}, isbn = {9781450305181}, pages = {277 -- 282}, year = {2011}, language = {en} } @article{EilmannZweifelBuchmannetal.2011, author = {Eilmann, Britta and Zweifel, Roman and Buchmann, Nina and Graf Pannatier, Elisabeth and Rigling, Andreas}, title = {Drought alters timing, quantity, and quality of wood formation in Scots pine}, series = {Journal of Experimental Botany}, volume = {62}, journal = {Journal of Experimental Botany}, number = {8}, publisher = {Oxford University Press}, address = {Oxford}, issn = {1460-2431 (Online)}, doi = {10.1093/jxb/erq443}, pages = {2763 -- 2771}, year = {2011}, language = {en} } @article{LevesqueSaurerSiegwolfetal.2013, author = {L{\´e}vesque, Mathieu and Saurer, Matthias and Siegwolf, Rolf and Eilmann, Britta and Brang, Peter and Bugmann, Harald and Rigling, Andreas}, title = {Drought response of five conifer species under contrasting water availability suggests high vulnerability of Norway spruce and European larch}, series = {Global Change Biology}, volume = {19}, journal = {Global Change Biology}, number = {10}, publisher = {Wiley-Blackwell}, address = {Oxford}, issn = {1365-2486 (Online)}, doi = {10.1111/gcb.12268}, pages = {3184 -- 3199}, year = {2013}, language = {en} } @article{EilmannZweifelBuchmannetal.2009, author = {Eilmann, Britta and Zweifel, Roman and Buchmann, Nina and Fonti, Patrick and Rigling, Andreas}, title = {Drought-induced adaptation of the xylem in Scots pine and pubescent oak}, series = {Tree Physiology}, volume = {29}, journal = {Tree Physiology}, number = {8}, publisher = {Heron}, address = {Victoria, BC}, issn = {0829-318X (Print)}, doi = {10.1093/treephys/tpp035}, pages = {1011 -- 1020}, year = {2009}, language = {en} } @article{StanleyHorsburghRossetal.2009, author = {Stanley, Lesley A. and Horsburgh, Brian C. and Ross, Jillian and Scheer, Nico and Wolf, C. The two empirical friction parameters μ and  correspond to a dry Coulomb friction and a viscous resistance, respectively. Although μ and  lack a proper physical explanation, 60 years of acquired avalanche data in the Swiss Alps made a systematic calibration possible. RAMMS can therefore successfully model avalanche flow depth, velocities, impact pressure and run out distances. Pudasaini and Hutter (2003) have proposed extended, rigorously derived model equations that account for local curvature and twist. A coordinate transformation into a reference system, applied to the actual mountain topography of the natural avalanche path, is performed. The local curvature and the twist of the avalanche path induce an additional term in the overburden pressure. This leads to a modification of the Coulomb friction, the free-surface pressure gradient, the pressure induced by the channel, and the gravity components along and normal to the curved and twisted reference surface. This eventually guides the flow dynamics and deposits of avalanches. In the present study, we investigate the influence of curvature on avalanche flow in real mountain terrain. Simulations of real avalanche paths are performed and compared for the different models approaches. An algorithm to calculate curvature in real terrain is introduced in RAMMS. This leads to a curvature dependent friction relation in an extended version of the Voellmy-Salm model equations. Our analysis provides yet another step in interpreting the physical meaning and significance of the friction parameters used in the RAMMS computational environment.}, language = {en} } @article{HueningWilkeNakielskietal.1997, author = {H{\"u}ning, Felix and Wilke, I. and Nakielski, G. and Kotzler, J.}, title = {Dynamic conductivity of YBCO thin films from low to very high frequencies / Wilke, I. ; Nakielski, G. ; Kotzler, J. ; Subke, K. The protection of the environment and the health of the population is the highest priority of our society. For the transport companies that operate these buses, not only ecological issues but also economic issues are of great importance. Due to the high purchase costs of electric buses compared to conventional buses, operators are forced to use electric vehicles in a targeted manner in order to ensure amortization over the service life of the vehicles. A compromise between ecology and economy must be found in order to both protect the environment and ensure economical operation of the buses. In this study, we present a new methodology for optimizing the vehicles' charging time as a function of the parameters CO₂eq emissions and electricity costs. Based on recorded driving profiles in daily bus operation, the energy demands of conventional and electric buses are calculated for the passenger transportation in the city of Aachen in 2017. Different charging scenarios are defined to analyze the influence of the temporal variability of CO₂eq intensity and electricity price on the environmental impact and economy of the bus. For every individual day of a year, charging periods with the lowest and highest costs and emissions are identified and recommendations for daily bus operation are made. To enable both the ecological and economical operation of the bus, the parameters of electricity price and CO₂ are weighted differently, and several charging periods are proposed, taking into account the priorities previously set. A sensitivity analysis is carried out to evaluate the influence of selected parameters and to derive recommendations for improving the ecological and economic balance of the battery-powered electric vehicle. In all scenarios, the optimization of the charging period results in energy cost savings of a maximum of 13.6\% compared to charging at a fixed electricity price. The savings potential of CO₂eq emissions is similar, at 14.9\%. From an economic point of view, charging between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. results in the lowest energy costs on average. The CO₂eq intensity is also low in this period, but midday charging leads to the largest savings in CO₂eq emissions. From a life cycle perspective, the electric bus is not economically competitive with the conventional bus. This paper presents a study on the effect of the drying method on BC films produced by Medusomyces gisevii using two different procedures: room temperature drying (RT, (24 ± 2 °C, humidity 65 ± 1\%, dried until a constant weight was reached) and freeze-drying (FD, treated at - 75 °C for 48 h). BC was synthesized using one of two different carbon sources—either glucose or sucrose. Structural differences in the obtained BC films were evaluated using atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction. Macroscopically, the RT samples appeared semi-transparent and smooth, whereas the FD group exhibited an opaque white color and sponge-like structure. SEM examination showed denser packing of fibrils in FD samples while RT-samples displayed smaller average fiber diameter, lower surface roughness and less porosity. AFM confirmed the SEM observations and showed that the FD material exhibited a more branched structure and a higher surface roughness. The samples cultivated in a glucose-containing nutrient medium, generally displayed a straight and ordered shape of fibrils compared to the sucrose-derived BC, characterized by a rougher and wavier structure. The BC films dried under different conditions showed distinctly different crystallinity degrees, whereas the carbon source in the culture medium was found to have a relatively small effect on the BC crystallinity.}, language = {en} } @article{FoersterSchaepersKruegeretal.1995, author = {F{\"o}rster, Arnold and Sch{\"a}pers, T. and Kr{\"u}ger, M. and Appenzeller, J.}, title = {Effect of electron-electron interaction on hot ballistic electron beams / Th. To assess the impact of drought on tree growth and survival, an irrigation experiment was initiated in 2003 in a mature pine forest, approximately doubling the annual precipitation. Tree crown transparency (lack of foliage) and leaf area index (LAI) were annually assessed. Seven irrigated and six control trees were felled in 2006, and needles, stem discs and branches were taken for growth analysis. Irrigation in 2004 and 2005, both with below-average precipitation, increased needle size, area and mass, stem growth and, with a 1-year delay, shoot length. This led to a relative decrease in tree crown transparency (-14\%) and to an increase in stand LAI (+20\%). Irrigation increased needle length by 70\%, shoot length by 100\% and ring width by 120\%, regardless of crown transparency. Crown transparency correlated positively with mean needle size, shoot length and ring width and negatively with specific leaf area. Trees with high crown transparency (low growth, short needles) experienced similar increases in needle mass and growth with irrigation than trees with low transparency (high growth, long needles), indicating that seemingly declining trees were able to 'recover' when water supply became sufficient. A simple drought index before and during the irrigation explained most of the variation found in the parameters for both irrigated and control trees.}, language = {en} }
