In the first model, hemoglobin (Hb) release is described as a permeation procedure across the membrane, assuming a shear stress-dependent process (sublethal model). The second model only accounts for hemoglobin release that is caused by cell membrane breakdown, which occurs when red blood cells (RBC) undergo mechanically induced shearing for a period longer than the threshold time (nonuniform threshold model). In this paper, we introduce a model that considers the hemolysis generated by both these possible phenomena. Methods Since hemolysis can possibly be caused by permeation of hemoglobin through the RBC functional membrane as well as by release of hemoglobin from RBC membrane breakdown, our proposed model combines both these models. An experimental setup consisting of a Couette device was utilized for validation of our proposed model. Results A comparison is presented between the damage index (DI) predicted by the proposed model vs. the sublethal model vs. the nonthreshold model and experimental datasets. This comparison covers a wide range of shear stress for both human and porcine blood. An appropriate agreement between the measured DI and the DI predicted by the present model was obtained. Conclusions The semiempirical hemolysis model introduced in this paper aims for significantly enhanced conformity with experimental data. While isolated spores in water are highly stable, even at elevated temperatures of 70 °C, exposure to H₂O₂ leads to a loss of spore integrity characterized by the release of the key spore biomarker dipicolinic acid (DPA) in a concentration-dependent manner, which indicates damage to the inner membrane of the spore. Brittle behaviour of the masonry infills in combination with the ductile behaviour of the RC frames makes infill walls prone to damage during earthquakes. Interstory deformations lead to an interaction between the infill and the RC frame, which affects the structural response. The result of this interaction is significant damage to the infill wall and sometimes to the surrounding structural system too. In most design codes, infill walls are considered as non-structural elements and neglected in the design process, because taking into account the infills and considering the interaction between frame and infill in software packages can be complicated and impractical. A good way to avoid negative aspects arising from this behavior is to ensure no or low-interaction of the frame and infill wall, for instance by decoupling the infill from the frame. This paper presents the numerical study performed to investigate new connection system called INODIS (Innovative Decoupled Infill System) for decoupling infill walls from surrounding frame with the aim to postpone infill activation to high interstory drifts thus reducing infill/frame interaction and minimizing damage to both infills and frames. The experimental results are first used for calibration and validation of the numerical model, which is then employed for investigating the influence of the material parameters as well as infill's and frame's geometry on the in-plane behaviour of the infilled frames with the INODIS system. For all the investigated situations, simulation results show significant improvements in behaviour for decoupled infilled RC frames in comparison to the traditionally infilled frames.}, language = {en} } @article{BungErpicumTullis2020, author = {Bung, Daniel Bernhard and Erpicum, S{\´e}bastien and Tullis, Blanke P.}, title = {Advances in hydraulic structures engineering}, series = {Journal of Hydraulic Engineering}, volume = {147}, journal = {Journal of Hydraulic Engineering}, number = {1}, publisher = {ASCE}, address = {Reston, Va.}, issn = {0733-9429 (Druckausgabe)}, doi = {10.1061/(ASCE)HY.1943-7900.0001851}, pages = {1 Seite}, year = {2020}, language = {en} } @article{PeloniDachwaldCeriotti2017, author = {Peloni, Alessandro and Dachwald, Bernd and Ceriotti, Matteo}, title = {Multiple near-earth asteroid rendezvous mission: Solar-sailing options}, series = {Advances in Space Research}, journal = {Advances in Space Research}, number = {In Press, Corrected Proof}, publisher = {Elsevier}, address = {Amsterdam}, issn = {0273-1177}, doi = {10.1016/j.asr.2017.10.017}, year = {2017}, language = {en} } @article{Bung2011, author = {Bung, Daniel Bernhard}, title = {Fließcharakteristik und Sauerstoffeintrag bei selbstbel{\"u}fteten Gerinnestr{\"o}mungen auf Kaskaden mit gem{\"a}ßigter Neigung}, series = {{\"O}sterreichische Wasser- und Abfallwirtschaft}, volume = {Vol. 63}, journal = {{\"O}sterreichische Wasser- und Abfallwirtschaft}, number = {Iss. 3-4}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Berlin}, issn = {1613-7566 (E-Journal); 0945-358X (Print)}, pages = {76 -- 81}, year = {2011}, language = {de} } @article{MichelButenwegKlinkel2020, author = {Michel, P. and Butenweg, Christoph and Klinkel, S.}, title = {Einfluss der dynamischen Steifigkeit von Flach-und Pfahlgr{\"u}ndungen auf die Dynamik von Onshore-Windenergieanlagen}, series = {Bauingenieur}, volume = {95}, journal = {Bauingenieur}, number = {4}, publisher = {VDI Fachmedien}, address = {D{\"u}sseldorf}, issn = {0005-6650}, pages = {139 -- 146}, year = {2020}, language = {de} } @article{ValeroChansonBung2019, author = {Valero, Daniel and Chanson, Hubert and Bung, Daniel Bernhard}, title = {Robust estimators for turbulence properties assessment}, pages = {1 -- 24}, year = {2019}, language = {en} } @article{DachwaldSeboldtLoebetal.2008, author = {Dachwald, Bernd and Seboldt, Wolfgang and Loeb, H. TEE are semi-conductor devices that can provide heating and cooling via a heat pump effect without direct noise emissions and no refrigerant use. An efficiency evaluation of the optimal operating mode is carried out for different numbers of TEE, ambient temperatures, and heating loads. The influence of an additional heat recovery unit on system efficiency and an unevenly distributed heating demand are examined. The results show that TEE can provide heat at a coefficient of performance (COP) greater than one especially for small heating demands and high ambient temperatures. The efficiency increases with the number of elements in the system and is subject to economies of scale. The best COP exceeds six at optimal operating conditions. An additional heat recovery unit proves beneficial for low ambient temperatures and systems with few TEE. It makes COPs above one possible at ambient temperatures below 0 ∘C. The effect increases efficiency by maximal 0.81 (from 1.90 to 2.71) at ambient temperature 5 K below room temperature and heating demand Q˙h=100W but is subject to diseconomies of scale. Thermoelectric technology is a valuable option for electricity-based heat supply and can provide cooling and ventilation functions. A careful system design as well as an additional heat recovery unit significantly benefits the performance. This makes TEE superior to direct current heating systems and competitive to heat pumps for small scale applications with focus on avoiding noise and harmful refrigerants.}, language = {en} } @article{DachwaldOhndorfSeboldt2005, author = {Dachwald, Bernd and Ohndorf, A. and Seboldt, Wolfgang}, title = {Optimierung der Lageregelung von Raumfahrzeugen mit Niedrigschubantrieb mittels evolution{\"a}rer neuronaler Regler / A. It is well adapted to living in loose sand by virtue of a combination of morphological and behavioural specializations. We investigated the bodyform of the sandfish using 3D-laserscanning and explored its locomotion in loose desert sand using fast nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging. The sandfish exhibits an in-plane meandering motion with a frequency of about 3 Hz and an amplitude of about half its body length accompanied by swimming-like (or trotting) movements of its limbs. No torsion of the body was observed, a movement required for a digging-behaviour. Simple calculations based on the Janssen model for granular material related to our findings on bodyform and locomotor behaviour render a local decompaction of the sand surrounding the moving sandfish very likely. Thus the sand locally behaves as a viscous fluid and not as a solid material. In this study, the multi-faceted and complex coal biosolubilization process by Bacillus sp. RKB 7 isolate from the Kazakhstan coal-mining soil is reported, and the derived products are characterized. Lignite solubilization tests performed for surface and suspension cultures testify to the formation of numerous soluble lignite-derived substances. Almost 24\% of crude lignite (5\% w/v) was solubilized within 14 days under slightly alkaline conditions (pH 8.2). FTIR analysis revealed various functional groups in the obtained biosolubilization products. Analyses of the lignite-derived humic products by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectrometry as well as elemental analysis yielded compatible results indicating the emerging products had a lower molecular weight and degree of aromaticity. Furthermore, XRD and SEM analyses were used to evaluate the biosolubilization processes from mineralogical and microscopic points of view. The findings not only contribute to a deeper understanding of microbe-mineral interactions in coal environments, but also contribute to knowledge of coal biosolubilization and bioconversion with regard to sustainable production of humic substances.
