N2  - Im Rahmen des Forschungsschwerpunkts 3 wurde experimentell und theoretisch die NO{sub x}-Bildung und -Reduktion bei der Druckkohlenstaubverbrennung untersucht. Der zuvor beschriebene Einfluss der Kohlemahlung auf die Flamme konnte auch anhand der NO{sub x}-Messungen an der DKSF-Anlage Aachen bestaetigt werden. Waehrend mit Braunkohle im Staubfeuerungsbetrieb noch keine eindeutige Druckabhaengigkeit nachgewiesen werden konnte, haben vom Lehrstuhl durchgefuehrte NO{sub x}-Messungen an der DKSF-Anlage Dorsten im Schmelzkammerfeuerungsbetrieb mit der Steinkohle Spitzbergen zwischen 9 und 13 bar ein Absinken der Stickoxidkonzentrationen mit steigendem Druck ergeben. Fuer die rheinische Braunkohle soll dieser Druckeinfluss in den naechsten Versuchsfahrten ausfuehrlicher untersucht werden. Es wurde anhand von numerischen Simulationen zu einer Braunkohleflamme der 6. Versuchsfahrt ein Vergleich zwischen der NO{sub x}-Modellierung im Standard-FLUENT-Code und in dem mit User Defined Subroutines der international flame research foundation (IFRF), Ijmuiden, erweiterten FLUENT-Code vorgenommen. Es zeigte sich, dass bei der Modellierung der Stickoxidbildung die unterschiedlich vorhergesagten Flammentemperaturen eine entscheidende Rolle spielen. Eine genauere Analyse der NO{sub x}-Modelle im Vergleich zu Messergebnissen ist bei einer Schmelzkammerfeuerung mit einer stabilen Flamme vorzunehmen. Es wurden zusaetzlich Messungen zur Untersuchung der Kinetik homogener Gasphasenreaktionen in Rauchgasen an einem Stahlreaktor durchgefuehrt. Dabei wurde sowohl der thermisch bedingte als auch der durch zudosierte Additive katalysierte Abbau nitroser Komponenten betrachtet. Vergleichend wurden mit einem am Lehrstuhl entwickelten Programm die Kinetik beschrieben. Hierbei wird mit einer Sensitivitaetsanalyse eine Reduzierung der detaillierten Darstellung der Reaktionskinetik erreicht, die es erlaubt, mit einem CFD-Code wie FLUENT zwei- und dreidimensionale Rechnungen zum Abbau verschiedener Rauchgaskomponenten durchzufuehren. Die Uebereinstimmung zwischen ein- und zweidimensionalen Rechnungen und den Messungen ist gut.
N2  - NOx formation and reduction in the coal combustion process was investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The influence of coal grain size described in earlier publications was proved by the measurements at the DKSF test facility at Aachen. While no pressure dependence was established so far for lignite, measurements on Spitzbergen coal at 9 - 13 bar showed a decrease in NOx concentrations with increasing pressure. This effect will be investigated for Rhenish brown coal in further experiments. Modelling by the standard FLUENT code and by the user defined subroutines of the FLUENT code developed by the International Flame Research Foundation (IFRF), Ijmuiden, showed that the different predictions of flame temperatures have a decisive role in the modelling of NOx formation. A more accurate analysis of the NOx models as compared to ther measurements will be carried out in a melting chamber furnace with a stable flame. Additionally, measurements were carried out for investigating the kinetics of homogeneous gaseous phase reactions in flue gases, i.e. the thermal and additive-catalysed degradation of nitrous components was investigated. The kinetics of the process was also described by a code developed at Aachen University. On the base of a sensitivity analysis, a reduction of the detailed modelling of the reaction kinetics is achieved which permits 2D and 3D calculations on the decomposition of different flue gas components using a CFD code like FLUENT. The 1D and 2D calculations and the measurements were found to be in good agreement.

N2  - Cement augmentation is an emerging surgical procedure in which bone cement is used to infiltrate and reinforce osteoporotic vertebrae. Although this infiltration procedure has been widely applied, it is performed empirically and little is known about the flow characteristics of cement during the injection process. We present a theoretical and experimental approach to investigate the intertrabecular bone permeability during the infiltration procedure. The cement permeability was considered to be dependent on time, bone porosity, and cement viscosity in our analysis. In order to determine the time-dependent permeability, ten cancellous bone cores were harvested from osteoporotic vertebrae, infiltrated with acrylic cement at a constant flow rate, and the pressure drop across the cores during the infiltration was measured. The viscosity dependence of the permeability was determined based on published experimental data. The theoretical model for the permeability as a function of bone porosity and time was then fit to the testing data. Our findings suggest that the intertrabecular bone permeability depends strongly on time. For instance, the initial permeability (60.89 mm4/N.s) reduced to approximately 63% of its original value within 18 seconds. This study is the first to analyze cement flow through osteoporotic bone. The theoretical and experimental models provided in this paper are generic. Thus, they can be used to systematically study and optimize the infiltration process for clinical practice.

N2  - Das von Texas-Instruments (TI) vertriebene Interface CBL2 wird über einige TI-Grafik-Rechner (TI-92, TI-89 usw.) angesteuert. Wegen seiner Handlichkeit wird dieses System beim Unterricht in wechselnden Räumen »großen« Messwerterfassungssystemen oft vorgezogen. Das CBL2 bietet drei analoge Eingänge, die immerhin mit 10 Bit Auflösung und bis zu einer Frequenz von 50 kHz arbeiten. Weiterhin besitzt das CBL2 eine Buchse für angeblich nur einen digitalen Ein- bzw. Ausgang. An diesem Eingang wird standardmäßig hauptsächlich der Bewegungssensor CBR betrieben. In diesem Beitrag werden Erweiterungsmöglichkeiten dieses Anschlusses beschrieben.

N2  - Recently, SHARP corporation has developed the world’s first “Plasma Cluster Ions (PCI)” air purification technology, which uses plasma discharge to generate cluster ions. The new plasma cluster device releases into the air positive and negative ions, which are harmless to humans and are able to decompose and deactivate airborne substances by chemical reactions. A lot of phenomenological tests of the PCI air purification technology on microbial cells have been conducted. And, in most cases, it has been shown that PCI demonstrate strongly pronounced killing effect. Although, the particular mechanisms of PCI action are still not evident. We studied variations in resistance to PCI among gram-positive airborne microorganisms, as well as some dose-dependent, spatial, cultural and biochemical properties of PCI action in respect of Staphylococcus spp, Enterococcus spp, Micrococcus spp.

N2  - Summary and Conclusions PCIs were clearly effective in terms of their antibacterial effects with the strains tested. This efficacy increased with the time the bacteries were exposed to PCIs. The bactericidal action has proved to be irreversible. PCIs were significantly less effective in shadowed areas. PCI exposure caused multiple protein damages as observed in SDS PAGE studies. There was no single but multiple molecular mechanism causing the bacterial death.

N2  - Recently, the SHARP Corporation, Japan, has developed the world’s first "Plasma Cluster Ions (PCI)" air purification technology using plasma discharge to generate cluster ions. The new plasma cluster device releases positive and negative ions into the air, which are able to decompose and deactivate harmful airborne substances by chemical reactions. Because cluster ions consist of positive and negative ions that normally exist in the natural world, they are completely harmless and safe to humans. The amount of ozone generated by cluster ions is less than 0.01 ppm, which is significantly less than the 0.05-ppm standard for industrial operations and consumer electronics. This amount, thus, has no harming effects whatsoever on the human body. But particular properties and chemical processes in PCI treatment are still under study. It has been shown that PCI in most cases show strongly pronounced irreversible killing effects in respect of airborne microflora due to free-radical induced reactions and can be considered as a potent technology to disinfect both home, medical and industrial appliances.

Das allgegenwärtige Konzept der Vernetzung dynamisiert Kunst, ihre Rezipienten und Ausstellungsorte. Die Beziehungen zwischen diesen Feldern werden mit Hilfe physiologischer Metaphern definiert und visualisiert. Frühere Speicher und Archive geraten in einen prozessualen Sog, in dem alles fluktuiert, sich kurzweilig verknüpft, auflöst und in permanente Dialoge mit seiner Umgebung tritt - das virtuelle Museum gerät in aktuellen Standortbestimmungen in die definitorische Nähe des Künstlichen Lebens.

N2  - Within the Crystal Clear Collaboration four centres are developing 2nd generation high performance small animal PET scanners for different kinds of animals and medical applications. The first prototypes are PMT-based systems including depth of interaction (DOI) detection by using a phoswich layer of LSO and LuYAP. The aim of these simulation studies is to optimize sensitivity and spatial resolution of given designs, which vary in FOVs caused by different detector configurations (ring/octagon) and sizes. For this purpose the simulation tool GEANT3 (CERN) was used. The simulations have shown that all PMT designs with one-to-one coupling of crystals have a very nonlinear axial sensitivity profile. By shifting every other PMT 1/4 of a PMT length in axial direction the sampling of the FOVs became more homogeneous. At an energy threshold of 350keV the regression coefficient increases from 0.818 for the non-shifted to 0.993 for the shifted design. Simulations of a point source centred in the FOV (threshold: 350keV) resulted in sensitivities of 4.2% for a 4×20PMT (LSO/LuYAP a 10mm) and 3.8% for a 4×16PMT (LSO/LuYAP a 8mm) ring design. The 3D-MLEM reconstruction of a point source shows the enormous improvement of resolution using a crystal double layer with DOI (3.1mm at 40mm from CFOV) instead of a 20mm single layer (11.9mm).
