N2  - This study has been performed to design the combination of the new ClearPET (ClearPET is a trademark of the Crystal Clear Collaboration), a small animal positron emission tomography (PET) system, with a micro-computed tomography (microCT) scanner. The properties of different microCT systems have been determined by simulations based on GEANT4. We will demonstrate the influence of the detector material and the X-ray spectrum on the obtained contrast. Four different detector materials (selenium, cadmium zinc telluride, cesium iodide and gadolinium oxysulfide) and two X-ray spectra (a molybdenum and a tungsten source) have been considered. The spectra have also been modified by aluminum filters of varying thickness. The contrast between different tissue types (water, air, brain, bone and fat) has been simulated by using a suitable phantom. The results indicate the possibility to improve the image contrast in microCT by an optimized combination of the X-ray source and detector material.

N2  - The ClearPET® scanners developed by the Crystal Clear Collaboration use multichannel PMTs as photodetectors with scintillator pixels coupled individually to each channel. In order to localize an event each channel anode is connected to a comparator that triggers when the anode signal exceeds a common predefined threshold. Two major difficulties here are crosstalk of light and the gain nonuniformity of the PMT channels. Crosstalk can generate false triggering in channels adjacent to the actual event. On the one hand this can be suppressed by sufficiently increasing the threshold, but on the other hand a threshold too high can already prevent valid events on the lower gain channels from being detected. Finally, both effects restrict the dynamic range of pulse heights that can be processed. The requirements to the dynamic range are not low as the ClearPET® scanners detect the depth of interaction by phoswich pixels consisting of LSO and Lu0.7Y0.3AP, two scintillators with different light yields. We will present a model to estimate the achievable dynamic range and show solutions to increase it.

N2  - Second generation high-performance PET scanners, called ClearPET™1, have been developed by working groups of the Crystal Clear Collaboration (CCC). High sensitivity and high spatial resolution for the ClearPET camera is achieved by using a phoswich arrangement combining two different types of lutetium-based scintillator materials: LSO from CTI and LuYAP:Ce from the CCC (ISTC project). In a first ClearPET prototype, phoswich arrangements of 8×8 crystals of 2×2×10 mm3 are coupled to multi-channel photomultiplier tubes (Hamamatsu R7600). A unit of four PMTs arranged in-line represents one of 20 sectors of the ring design. The opening diameter of the ring is 120 mm, the axial detector length is 110 mm.The PMT pulses are digitized by free-running ADCs and digital data processing determines the gamma energy, the phoswich layer and even the exact pulse starting time, which is subsequently used for coincidence detection. The gantry allows rotation of the detector modules around the field of view.

Preliminary data shows a correct identification of the crystal layer about (98±1)%. Typically the energy resolution is (23.3±0.5)% for the luyap layer and (15.4±0.4)% for the lso layer. early studies showed the timing resolution of 2 ns FWHM and 4.8 ns FWTM. the intrinsic spatial resolution ranges from 1.37 mm to 1.61 mm full-width of half-maximum (FWHM) with a mean of 1.48 mm FWHM. further improvements in image and energy resolution are expected when the system geometry is fully modeled.

N2  - Die Ausbildung in Hochtechnologien wie beispielsweise der Mikrosystemtechnik ist oft durch einen hohen Grad an Komplexität charakterisiert. Damit verbunden sind hohe Kosten für die Errichtung und den Betrieb der speziellen Laborräume und ihre häufig geringe Verfügbarkeit für die Studierenden. Zukünftige Ingenieure sammeln während ihrer Ausbildung aus diesen Gründen nur in beschränktem Umfang praktische Erfahrungen. Die Industrie hingegen fordert Personal mit hoher fachlicher Kompetenz, also fundiertem theoretischen Wissen und umfangreichen praktischen Kenntnissen. Dieser Diskrepanz – qualifizierte Ingenieure auf der einen Seite und eine eher theoretisch ausgerichtete Ausbildung auf der anderen Seite – wird mit einem neuen Blended-Learning-Konzept für MST-Technologiepraktika begegnet. Lernende werden über ein virtuelles Labor, das einen echten Reinraum mit realen Anlagen simuliert, intensiv auf reale Laborpraktika vorbereitet. Dabei geht es im virtuellen Labor gleichermaßen um die Vermittlung von Theorie und Praxis. Nur trainierte Teilnehmer mit einer intensiven Vorbereitung sind in der Lage, relativ eigenständig ein echtes MST-Bauteil innerhalb des anschließenden einwöchigen Laborkurses zu fertigen. Die Wirksamkeit des Konzeptes und die Steigerung des Lernerfolges durch die kombinierten virtuellen und realen Laborkurse wurden im Rahmen der Dissertation begleitend untersucht. Die Ergebnisse flossen direkt in die Weiterentwicklung der Technologiepraktika ein. Die Konzepte und Erkenntnisse sind zudem sehr interessant für die Entwicklung von Blended-Learning-Angeboten in ähnlichen oder anderen Fachgebieten sowie für weitere Bildungseinrichtungen. <b>(Die Dissertation liegt hier in 2 Fassungen vor: Die Originalfassung ist nur bei guter Rechnerausstattung und guter Netzanbindung nutzbar, die konvertierte Fassung ist unverändert, allerdings sind Qualitätseinbußen beim Ausdruck einiger Grafiken möglich)</b>
N2  - Education in high technologies, like e.g. Microsystems technology, is usually characterized by a high degree of complexity. In addition it is usually connected with large economic efforts for invest, operation and maintenance of the special laboratory facilities. The access to such facilities for educational purposes is often quite limited. Therefore engineering students rather rarely gather practical experience in such technologies during their university studies. In contrast, industry has a large demand for engineers with high professional competence, i.e. profound theoretical knowledge combined with substantial practical experience. The newly developed blended learning concept for MST laboratory training tries to bridge the gap between the need for qualified engineers and the more theoretical university education. The learners prepare intensively for real hands-on clean room trainings with a virtual technology laboratory, i.e. a computer simulation of the clean room machines and the corresponding processes. In the virtual technology laboratory the students brush up their theoretical knowledge and at the same time learn to operate the complex clean room machines. Only well trained and intensively prepared students are capable to produce a fully functional MST component within a compact clean room laboratory course of only one week duration and an only modest amount of supervision. The effectivity of this concept and the increase of the learning success due to the specific mixture of virtual and real laboratory sessions has been accompanied and analysed by this dissertation. The results have been used to further improve the laboratory courses. Concepts and results are also very attractive for comparable blended learning proposals in other technical disciplines.

N2  - Physische Prototypen, also Anschauungs- und Funktionsmodelle nach den generativen oder Rapid Prototyping (RP) Verfahren haben sich in diesem Zusammenhang vor allem als Hilfsmittel zur effektiven Kommunikation und zur Evaluierung von Produkteigenschaften einen festen Platz in der Produktentstehung erworben. Die positiven Effekte der etablierten RP Verfahren sind unumstritten. Einfachere, schnellere und wirtschaftlichere Maschinen (Prototyper, Fabrikator), vor allem auch für die Büroumgebung, geben neue Impulse im Sinne der Optimierung der heutigen Verfahren. Eine neue Dimension verspricht die Option „Farbe“ der bisher fast ausschließlich monochromen Modelle. Ist Farbe nur „nice to have“ oder welchen Effekt haben farbige Modelle als Werkzeug von Konstrukteuren und Produktenwicklern? Welche Perspektiven bietet „Farbe“ darüber hinaus?

N2  - Limit loads can be calculated with the finite element method (FEM) for any component, defect geometry, and loading. FEM suggests that published long crack limit formulae for axial defects under-estimate the burst pressure for internal surface defects in thick pipes while limit loads are not conservative for deep cracks and for pressure loaded crack-faces. Very deep cracks have a residual strength, which is modelled by a global collapse load. These observations are combined to derive new analytical local and global collapse loads. The global collapse loads are close to FEM limit analyses for all crack dimensions.

N2  - In the new European standard for unfired pressure vessels, EN 13445-3, there are two approaches for carrying out a Design-by-Analysis that cover both the stress categorization method (Annex C) and the direct route method (Annex B) for a check against global plastic deformation and against progressive plastic deformation. This paper presents the direct route in the language of limit and shakedown analysis. This approach leads to an optimization problem. Its solution with Finite Element Analysis is demonstrated for mechanical and thermal actions. One observation from the examples is that the so-called 3f (3Sm) criterion fails to be a reliable check against progressive plastic deformation. Precise conditions are given, which greatly restrict the applicability of the 3f criterion.
