N2  - The main objective of the BATIMASS project was to address how the energy balance in relatively lightweight steel buildings can be improved by building in ‘active thermal mass’ (ATM) into the building fabric. This was achieved through concept design, dynamic thermal modelling and testing of a number of potentially viable systems and concepts. A significant programme of thermal simulation modelling was undertaken utilising the thermally equivalent slab (TES) concept to model the passive thermal capacity effect of profiled, composite metal floor decks. It is apparent from the modelling results that thermal mass is a highly complex phenomenon which is highly dependent upon building type, occupancy patterns, climate and many other aspects of the building design and servicing strategy. The ATM systems developed, both conceptually and for prototype testing, focussed on water-cooled composite slabs, the Cofradal floor system and the phase change material (PCM) Energain. In addition to laboratory testing of prototypes, whole building monitoring was undertaken at the Kubik building in Spain and the RWTH test building in Germany. Advanced thermal modelling was also undertaken to estimate the likely benefits of the ATM concept designs developed and for comparison with the test results. In addition to thermal testing, structural tests were conducted on composite floor specimens incorporating embedded water pipes. This Final Report presents the results of the activities carried out under this RFCS contract RFSR CT 2012 00033. The work carried out is reported in six major sections corresponding to the technical Work Packages of the project. Only summaries of the work carried out are provided in this report; all work undertaken is fully reported in the formal project deliverables.

N2  - The first and last mile of a railway journey, in both freight and transit applications, constitutes a high effort and is either non-productive (e.g. in the case of depot operations) or highly inefficient (e.g. in industrial railways). These parts are typically managed on-sight, i.e. with no signalling and train protection systems ensuring the freedom of movement. This is possible due to the rather short braking distances of individual vehicles and shunting consists. The present article analyses the braking behaviour of such shunting units. For this purpose, a dedicated model is developed. It is calibrated on published results of brake tests and validated against a high-definition model for low-speed applications. Based on this model, multiple simulations are executed to obtain a Monte Carlo simulation of the resulting braking distances. Based on the distribution properties and established safety levels, the risk of exceeding certain braking distances is evaluated and maximum braking distances are derived. Together with certain parameters of the system, these can serve in the design and safety assessment of driver assistance systems and automation of these processes.

Es gibt sowohl sehr persönliche, subjektive Beschäftigung mit dem Thema als auch eine objektive, wissenschaftliche Herangehensweise. Das Buch ist vor allem mit typografischen Elementen gestaltet worden, wobei in Inhalt und Typografie viel Wert auf Niedrigschwelligkeit gelegt wurde. Außen ist ein partieller Relieflack aufgetragen worden, innen hat das Buch bedrucktes Vorsatzpapier. Ziel des Projektes war es, Männlichkeit und die verschiedenen Meinungen dazu möglichst verständlich wiedergeben zu können, um so einen Dialog zum Thema anzuregen.

The text is motivated by practical examples and the implementations of the corresponding algorithms are always given directly in R in a comprehensible form. Overall, R is given great importance throughout. Each chapter includes a section of exercises and, for the more mathematically inclined readers, concludes with rigorous proofs. The intended audience is graduate students who already have a prior knowledge of probability theory and mathematical statistics.

Es wird im Wesentlichen auf die Bodenbeschreibung und Klassifikation nach DIN 18196 sowie nach DIN 18300 eingegangen, welche sowohl für die weiteren Berechnungen als auch für die Kalkulation von großer Bedeutung sind.

Die aus der Praxis aufgeführten Beispiele verdeutlichen verschiedene Untersuchungs- und Auswertungsmethoden für direkte und indirekte Aufschlüsse, diese enthalten Labor- und Feldversuche, mit denen man die Verdichtbarkeit von Böden auswertet und quantifiziert, sowie viele andere Themenbereiche wie Erddruckberechnungen sowie Spannungs- und Setzungsberechnungen.

Darüber hinaus werden exemplarisch bestimmte Verbauarten bezüglich ihrer Bemessung erläutert. Es wird ebenfalls auf das Thema Wasserhaltung eingegangen und die erforderlichen Maßnahmen beschrieben, um bestimmte Versagensmechanismen - wie z.B. den hydraulischen Grundbruch - zu verhindern.

Dies gilt auch für die Einwirkung von Blitzeinschlägen. Die bisherige Nachweisführung zu Blitz- und Überspannungsschutz eines KKW in Deutschland ist deterministisch. In diesem Bericht werden das Vorgehen für einen entsprechenden Nachweis für leittechnische Einrichtungen der Sicherheitstechnik von KKW, der zur geforderten Zielgröße der Eintrittshäufigkeit führt. Die Ergebnisse werden zusammenfassend bewertet.

N2  - Im Computerspiel „blind – invisible connection“ taucht der Spieler in eine Fantasiewelt ein, die die sozialen Medien widerspiegelt und von einer Maschine beherrscht wird. Um zu erfahren, was in dieser Welt geschehen ist, muss die Geschichte Schritt für Schritt erspielt und wie ein Puzzle zusammengesetzt werden. Dabei interagieren die Spieler:innen mittels Dialogen mit den Bewohner:innen der Fantasiewelt und lösen Rätsel, die die Geschichte enthüllen. Durch Analogien zwischen der Fantasiewelt und den sozialen Medien wird die Funktionsweise und der Einfluss der Plattformen auf die Menschen und die Gesellschaft verdeutlicht. So wird eine Reflexion des eigenen Umgangs mit den sozialen Medien angeregt und Gesprächsstoff für Diskussionen unter den Spieler:innen und Mitmenschen geliefert.

N2  - Das Einkaufen in Einkaufszentren oder Ladenstraßen ist für Menschen ohne Sehbehinderung eine selbstverständliche Tätigkeit. Für Menschen mit Sehbehinderung gibt es bis heute keine Möglichkeit, sich ohne Hilfe von Familienmitgliedern, Freund:innen oder Pflegepersonal in einem Einkaufszentrum zurechtzufinden. Genau dieses Problem löst "NAVON.". Er ist ein intelligenter und smarter Blindenstock, welcher durch Ultraschalldistanzsensoren frühzeitig Hindernisse erkennt und die Möglichkeit bietet, den Betroffenen durch das Einkaufszentrum zu lotsen. Die Logik des Systems liegt innerhalb des Handgriffs, welcher die wichtigsten Einstellungen bzgl. Sprache und haptischer Bedienelemente steuert. Ebenfalls gibt er dem Betroffenen auch ein haptisches Feedback, um Hindernisse frühzeitig umgehen zu können. "NAVON." ist ein wichtiger Ansatz für eine neue Kategorie von Produkten und Blindenstöcken. Darüber hinaus birgt das Konzept auch weitere Potenziale für öffentliche Gebäude (Ämter, Krankenhäuser, etc..).

N2  - In many historical centers in Europe, stone masonry is part of building aggregates, which developed when the layout of the city or village was densified. The analysis of such building aggregates is very challenging and modelling guidelines missing. Advances in the development of analysis methods have been impeded by the lack of experimental data on the seismic response of such aggregates. The SERA project AIMS (Seismic Testing of Adjacent Interacting Masonry Structures) provides such experimental data by testing an aggregate of two buildings under two horizontal components of dynamic excitation. With the aim to advance the modelling of unreinforced masonry aggregates, a blind prediction competition is organized before the experimental campaign. Each group has been provided a complete set of construction drawings, material properties, testing sequence and the list of measurements to be reported. The applied modelling approaches span from equivalent frame models to Finite Element models using shell elements and discrete element models with solid elements. This paper compares the first entries, regarding the modelling approaches, results in terms of base shear, roof displacements, interface openings, and the failure modes.

N2  - It was generally believed that coal sources are not favorable as live-in habitats for microorganisms due to their recalcitrant chemical nature and negligible decomposition. However, accumulating evidence has revealed the presence of diverse microbial groups in coal environments and their significant metabolic role in coal biogeochemical dynamics and ecosystem functioning. The high oxygen content, organic fractions, and lignin-like structures of lower-rank coals may provide effective means for microbial attack, still representing a greatly unexplored frontier in microbiology. Coal degradation/conversion technology by native bacterial and fungal species has great potential in agricultural development, chemical industry production, and environmental rehabilitation. Furthermore, native microalgal species can offer a sustainable energy source and an excellent bioremediation strategy applicable to coal spill/seam waters. Additionally, the measures of the fate of the microbial community would serve as an indicator of restoration progress on post-coal-mining sites. This review puts forward a comprehensive vision of coal biodegradation and bioprocessing by microorganisms native to coal environments for determining their biotechnological potential and possible applications.

Based on empirical methods, in particular for the production of foodstuffs and daily commodities, these disciplines have become one of the most innovative future issues. Due to the increasing detailed understanding of cellular processes, production strains can now be optimized. In combination with modern bioprocesses, a variety of bulk and fine chemicals as well as pharmaceuticals can be produced efficiently. In this article, some of the current trends in biotechnology are discussed.

N2  - Der nachwachsende Rohstoff Raps ist in großen Mengen verfügbar und eine Quelle für Biomoleküle mit hohem Wertschöpfungspotenzial. Entwicklungen zur biotechnologischen Wertstoffgewinnung werden dabei schwerpunktmäßig in den Bereichen Aufarbeitung und Funktionalisierung von Polyphenolen und Fetten betrieben. Bei der Verarbeitung der Pflanzenmaterialien werden dabei insbesondere Verfahren zur adsorptiven Aufreinigung und Auftrennung mittels Materialien mit modifizierten Bleicherden und anderen organischen oder anorganischen Adsorbentien untersucht. Ferner wurden für die Aufreinigung von Polyphenolen adsorptive sowie extraktive Prozesse entwickelt. Bei den Entwicklungen wird berücksichtigt, dass Bioraffinerien auf eine fortwährende Gewährleistung eines hohen Produktions- bzw. Lieferbedarfs nachwachsender Rohstoffe angewiesen sind. Somit werden Optionen dezentraler regionaler Vorbehandlungs- und Wertschöpfungsketten in der Nähe landwirtschaftlicher Betriebe einbezogen. Neben neuen Aufreinigungsverfahren werden mikrobielle und enzymatische Prozesse zur wertsteigernden Umsetzung von Glycerin, Polyphenolen und Zuckermonomeren vorgestellt sowie Limitierungen nachwachsender Rohstoffe der 2. Generation diskutiert.
