N2  - Heparin is a natural polysaccharide, which plays essential role in many biological processes. Alterations in building blocks can modify biological roles of commercial heparin products, due to significant changes in the conformation of the polymer chain. The variability structure of heparin leads to difficulty in quality control using different analytical methods, including infrared (IR) spectroscopy. In this paper molecular modelling of heparin disaccharide subunits was performed using quantum chemistry. The structural and spectral parameters of these disaccharides have been calculated using RHF/6-311G. In addition, over-sulphated chondroitin sulphate disaccharide was studied as one of the most widespread contaminants of heparin. Calculated IR spectra were analyzed with respect to specific structure parameters. IR spectroscopic fingerprint was found to be sensitive to substitution pattern of disaccharide subunits. Vibrational assignments of calculated spectra were correlated with experimental IR spectral bands of native heparin. Chemometrics was used to perform multivariate analysis of simulated spectral data.

N2  - Numerical avalanche dynamics models have become an essential part of snow engineering. Coupled with field observations and historical records, they are especially helpful in understanding avalanche flow in complex terrain. However, their application poses several new challenges to avalanche engineers. A detailed understanding of the avalanche phenomena is required to construct hazard scenarios which involve the careful specification of initial conditions (release zone location and dimensions) and definition of appropriate friction parameters. The interpretation of simulation results requires an understanding of the numerical solution schemes and easy to use visualization tools. We discuss these problems by presenting the computer model RAMMS, which was specially designed by the SLF as a practical tool for avalanche engineers. RAMMS solves the depth-averaged equations governing avalanche flow with accurate second-order numerical solution schemes. The model allows the specification of multiple release zones in three-dimensional terrain. Snow cover entrainment is considered. Furthermore, two different flow rheologies can be applied: the standard Voellmy–Salm (VS) approach or a random kinetic energy (RKE) model, which accounts for the random motion and inelastic interaction between snow granules. We present the governing differential equations, highlight some of the input and output features of RAMMS and then apply the models with entrainment to simulate two well-documented avalanche events recorded at the Vallée de la Sionne test site.

N2  - Recent Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) design procedures rely on full aircraft steady-state Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) analyses in early design stages. Small sensor turrets are included in such simulations, even though their aerodynamic properties show highly unsteady behavior. Very little is known about the effects of this approach on the simulation outcomes of small turrets. Therefore, the flow around a model turret at a Reynolds number of 47,400 is simulated with a steady-state RANS approach and compared to experimental data. Lift, drag, and surface pressure show good agreement with the experiment. The RANS model predicts the separation location too far downstream and shows a larger recirculation region aft of the body. Both characteristic arch and horseshoe vortex structures are visualized and qualitatively match the ones found by the experiment. The Reynolds number dependence of the drag coefficient follows the trend of a sphere within a distinct range. The outcomes indicate that a steady-state RANS model of a small sensor turret is able to give results that are useful for UAV engineering purposes but might not be suited for detailed insight into flow properties.

N2  - Als um 1987 ein Verfahren namens Stereolithographie und ein Stereolithography Apparatus (SLA) vorgestellt wurden, war der Traum von der Herstellung beliebiger dreidimensionaler Bauteile direkt aus Computerdaten und ohne bauteilspezifische Werkzeuge Realität geworden. Ein Anwendungs-Szenario wurde gleich mitgeliefert. Diese Technologie würde es möglich machen, die gesamte Ersatzteilversorgung der Amerikanischen Pazifikflotte mittels ein paar dieser Maschinen, umfangreicher Datenstätze und genügend Rohmaterial vor Ort auf einem Flugzeugträger direkt nach Bedarf zu fertigen. Diese Vorstellung definierte schon damals die direkte digitale Fertigung, das Rapid Manufacturing. In der Realität bestanden die mit diesem Verfahren hergestellten Bauteile nur aus Kunststoff, waren ungenau, bruchempfindlich und klebrig und allein in der Produktentwicklung, eben als Prototypen zu benutzen. Sie waren schnell verfügbar, weil zu Ihrer Herstellung keine Werkzeuge benötigt wurden. Folgerichtige und zudem modern hießen sie: Rapid Prototyping. Rapid Prototyping wurde schnell zum Synonym eines neuen Zweiges der Fertigungstechnik, der Generativen Fertigungstechnik. Die weitere Entwicklung brachte neue Verfahren, höhere Genauigkeiten, verbesserte Werkstoffe und neue Anwendungen. Die Herstellung von Negativen, also Werkzeugen, mit dem gleichen Verfahren wurde marketing-getrieben Rapid Tooling genannt und als die ersten Bauteile nicht mehr als Prototypen, sondern als Endprodukte eingesetzt wurden, nannte man dies Rapid Manufacturing - das Ziel war erreicht. War das Ziel wirklich erreicht? Ist es Rapid Manufacturing, wenn ein generativ gefertigtes Bauteil die gewünschte Spezifikation erreicht? Was muss passieren, damit aus dem Phänomen Rapid Prototyping eine Strategie wird, die geeignet ist, einen Paradigmenwechsel von der heutigen Hersteller-induzierten Massenproduktion von Massenartikeln zur Verbraucher-induzierten (und verantworteten) Massenproduktion von Einzelteilen für jedermann ermöglichen und möglicherweise unsere Arbeits- und Lebensformen tiefgreifend zu beeinflussen? Im Beitrag wird der Begriff der (Fertigungs-) Strategie „Rapid Manufacturing“ näher beleuchtet. Es wird diskutiert, welche Maßnahmen auf der technischen und der operative Ebene getroffen werden müssen, damit die generative Fertigungstechnik im Sinne dieser Strategie umgesetzt werden kann. Beispiele belegen, dass diese Entwicklung bereits begonnen hat und geben Anregungen für eine konstruktive Diskussion auf der RapidTech 2006.
N2  - As a process called stereolithography and a stereolithography apparatus (SLA) was presented in 1987, the dream of manufacturing any three-dimensional component directly from computer data and without component-specific tools became reality. An application scenario was supplied at the same time. This technology would make it possible to produce the entire spare parts requirement of the American Pacific Fleet merely through the use of a couple of such machines, extensive datasets and enough raw material on board an aircraft carrier directly as required. This image defined direct digital fabrication, rapid manufacturing, even at that time. In reality, this procedure only managed to produce components in plastic which were imprecise, fragile and sticky and only usable as prototypes in product development. They were rapidly available, because no tools were required for their manufacture. Consequentially, they are now known as Rapid Prototyping in modern jargon. Rapid Prototyping quickly became a synonym for a new branch of production engineering known as generative production engineering. Continued development brought new processes, improved accuracy, improved materials and new applications. The manufacturing of negatives, in other words tools, using the same procedure was quickly named rapid tooling by the marketing sector, and once the first components were used as final products instead of just prototypes the process was renamed "rapid manufacturing" - the goal had been reached. Was the goal really reached? Is it rapid manufacturing if a generatively manufactured component reaches the required specifications? What has to happen so that the rapid prototyping phenomenon becomes a strategy which is suitable for enabling the paradigm change from current manufacture-induced mass production of mass articles to consumer-induced (and consumer-responsible) mass production of single parts for anyone, and in all possibility makes dramatic changes in our way of working and living? The lecture includes detailed information about the (production) strategy term "rapid manufacturing". We will be discussing which measures need to be taken on the technical and operative level so that generative production engineering can be implemented in the sense of this strategy. Examples will show that this development has already started, and should provoke stimulation leading to constructive discussion during RapidTech 2006.

N2  - Die generative Herstellung von Kunststoffbauteilen hat im Gewand des Rapid Prototyping die Produktentwicklung nachhaltig positiv beeinflusst und ist im Begriff als Rapid Manufacturing die Fertigung zu revolutionieren. Je mehr sich die besonderen Eigenschaften generativ gefertigter Kunststoffbauteile herumsprechen, desto lauter wird der Ruf nach Metallbauteilen. Die Entwicklung entsprechender Prozesse läuft auf Hochtouren, kann aber bisher aber erst vereinzelt Erfolge vorweisen. Dabei wären es gerade die Metallbauteile, die ausgestattet mit den besonderen Merkmalen generativ gefertigter Werkstücke, in vielen Branchen einen deutlichen Entwicklungsschub auslösen könnten. Für den potenziellen Anwender ist dabei besonders verwirrend, dass die unterschiedlichsten Ansätze nebeneinander verfolgt werden. Im Folgenden soll daher der Versuche unternommen werden, dieses weite Feld systematisiert darzustellen und Möglichkeiten und Trends zu erläutern.
N2  - The generative manufacturing of plastic components via rapid prototyping has positively affected the product development. As 'rapid manufacturing' the method is about to revolutionize the manufacturing in general. The more the special characteristics of generative manufactured plastic components are getting about, the louder becomes the call for generative manufactured metal components. The development of analogical processes runs on full speed. So far however, only sporadic successes can be registered. Though there are in particular the metal components which could, equipped with the special characteristics of generative manufactured components, initiate a developmental boost in many industries. For the potential operator it is particularly confusing that the different approaches are traced parallel. Therefore in the following contribution the attempt is undertaken not only to represent this wide field in a systematic way but to describe possibilities and trends as well.

N2  - Ein 34-jähriger männlicher Patient stellte sich zur Abklärung einer seit dem 9. Lebensjahr bestehenden und im letzten Jahr rasch progredienten Visusminderung beider Augen bei uns vor. Er beschrieb eine subjektiv zunehmende, im Spiegel für ihn selbst sichtbare, weißliche Trübung in der Pupille beidseits und eine starke Blendempfindlichkeit. Nebenbefundlich gab er rezidivierende Konjunktivitiden und morgens verklebte Lider an. Eine Allergie auf Gräserpollen und eine Unverträglichkeit auf Alkohol sowie mehrere Lebensmittel seien ebenfalls bekannt.

Zusätzlich leidet der Patient an stark ausgeprägtem atopischem Ekzem. Dieses wurde nie systemisch, sondern nur bei Bedarf mit kortisonhaltiger Salbe therapiert.

N2  - REM sleep without atonia (RSWA) is a key feature for the diagnosis of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder (RBD). We introduce RBDtector, a novel open-source software to score RSWA according to established SINBAR visual scoring criteria. We assessed muscle activity of the mentalis, flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), and anterior tibialis (AT) muscles. RSWA was scored manually as tonic, phasic, and any activity by human scorers as well as using RBDtector in 20 subjects. Subsequently, 174 subjects (72 without RBD and 102 with RBD) were analysed with RBDtector to show the algorithm’s applicability. We additionally compared RBDtector estimates to a previously published dataset. RBDtector showed robust conformity with human scorings. The highest congruency was achieved for phasic and any activity of the FDS. Combining mentalis any and FDS any, RBDtector identified RBD subjects with 100% specificity and 96% sensitivity applying a cut-off of 20.6%. Comparable performance was obtained without manual artefact removal. RBD subjects also showed muscle bouts of higher amplitude and longer duration. RBDtector provides estimates of tonic, phasic, and any activity comparable to human scorings. RBDtector, which is freely available, can help identify RBD subjects and provides reliable RSWA metrics.

N2  - As with most high-velocity free-surface flows, stepped spillway flows become self-aerated when the drop height exceeds a critical value. Due to the step-induced macro-roughness, the flow field becomes more turbulent than on a similar smooth-invert chute. For this reason, cascades are oftentimes used as re-aeration structures in wastewater treatment. However, for stepped spillways as flood release structures downstream of deoxygenated reservoirs, gas transfer is also of crucial significance to meet ecological requirements. Prediction of mass transfer velocities becomes challenging, as the flow regime differs from typical previously studied flow conditions. In this paper, detailed air-water flow measurements are conducted on stepped spillway models with different geometry, with the aim to estimate the specific air-water interface. Re-aeration performances are determined by applying the absorption method. In contrast to earlier studies, the aerated water body is considered a continuous mixture up to a level where 75% air concentration is reached. Above this level, a homogenous surface wave field is considered, which is found to significantly affect the total air-water interface available for mass transfer. Geometrical characteristics of these surface waves are obtained from high-speed camera investigations. The results show that both the mean air concentration and the mean flow velocity have influence on the mass transfer. Finally, an empirical relationship for the mass transfer on stepped spillway models is proposed.

N2  - Oxorhenium(V) complexes [ReOX3(PPh3)2] (X = Cl, Br) react with phenylacetylene under formation of complexes with ylide-type ligands. Compounds of the compositions [ReOCl3(PPh3){C(Ph)C(H)(PPh3)}] (1), [ReOBr3(OPPh3){C(Ph)C(H)(PPh3)}] (2), and [ReOBr3(OPPh3){C(H)C(Ph)(PPh3)}] (3) were isolated and characterized by X-ray diffraction. They contain a ligand, which was formed by a nucleophilic attack of released PPh3 at coordinated phenylacetylene. The structures of the products show that there is no preferable position for this attack. Cleavage of the Re–C bond in 3 and dimerization of the organic ligand resulted in the formation of the [{(PPh3)(H)CC(Ph)}2]2+ cation, which crystallized as its [(ReOBr4)(OReO3)]2– salt.

N2  - Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), a strong oxidizer, is a commonly used sterilization agent employed during aseptic food processing and medical applications. To assess the sterilization efficiency with H₂O₂, bacterial spores are common microbial systems due to their remarkable robustness against a wide variety of decontamination strategies. Despite their widespread use, there is, however, only little information about the detailed time-resolved mechanism underlying the oxidative spore death by H₂O₂. In this work, we investigate chemical and morphological changes of individual Bacillus atrophaeus spores undergoing oxidative damage using optical sensing with trapping Raman microscopy in real-time. The time-resolved experiments reveal that spore death involves two distinct phases: (i) an initial phase dominated by the fast release of dipicolinic acid (DPA), a major spore biomarker, which indicates the rupture of the spore’s core; and (ii) the oxidation of the remaining spore material resulting in the subsequent fragmentation of the spores’ coat. Simultaneous observation of the spore morphology by optical microscopy corroborates these mechanisms. The dependence of the onset of DPA release and the time constant of spore fragmentation on H₂O₂ shows that the formation of reactive oxygen species from H₂O₂ is the rate-limiting factor of oxidative spore death.

N2  - A calorimetric gas sensor is presented for the monitoring of vapour-phase H2O2 at elevated temperature during sterilisation processes in aseptic food industry. The sensor was built up on a flexible polyimide foil (thickness: 25 μm) that has been chosen due to its thermal stability and low thermal conductivity. The sensor set-up consists of two temperature-sensitive platinum thin-film resistances passivated by a layer of SU-8 photo resist and catalytically activated by manganese(IV) oxide. Instead of an active heating structure, the calorimetric sensor utilises the elevated temperature of the evaporated H2O2 aerosol. In an experimental test rig, the sensor has shown a sensitivity of 4.78 °C/(%, v/v) in a H2O2 concentration range of 0%, v/v to 8%, v/v. Furthermore, the sensor possesses the same, unchanged sensor signal even at varied medium temperatures between 210 °C and 270 °C of the gas stream. At flow rates of the gas stream from 8 m3/h to 12 m3/h, the sensor has shown only a slightly reduced sensitivity at a low flow rate of 8 m3/h. The sensor characterisation demonstrates the suitability of the calorimetric gas sensor for monitoring the efficiency of industrial sterilisation processes.

N2  - The radio-based wireless data communication has made the realization of new technical solutions possible in many fields of the automation technology (AT). For about ten years, a constant disproportionate growth of wireless technologies can be observed in the automation technology.
However, it shows that especially for the AT, conventional technologies of office automation are unsuitable and/or not manageable. The employment of mobile services in the industrial automation technology has the potential of significant cost and time savings. This leads to an increased productivity in various fields of the AT, for example in the factory and process automation or in production logistics. In this paper technologies and solutions for an automation-suited supply of mobile wireless services will be introduced under the criteria of real time suitability, IT-security and service orientation.
Emphasis will be put on the investigation and development of wireless convergence layers for different radio technologies, on the central provision of support services for an easy-to-use, central, backup enabled management of combined wired / wireless networks and on the study on integrability in a Profinet real-time Ethernet network.

N2  - The light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) is an electrochemical sensor with a field-effect structure to detect the variation of the Nernst potential at its sensor surface, the measured area on which is defined by illumination. Thanks to this light-addressability, the LAPS can be applied to chemical imaging sensor systems, which can visualize the two-dimensional distribution of a particular target ion on the sensor surface. Chemical imaging sensor systems are expected to be useful for analysis of reaction and diffusion in various electrochemical and biological samples. Recent developments of LAPS-based chemical imaging sensor systems, in terms of the spatial resolution, measurement speed, image quality, miniaturization and integration with microfluidic devices, are summarized and discussed.

N2  - Biologically sensitive field-effect devices (BioFEDs) advantageously combine the electronic field-effect functionality with the (bio)chemical receptor’s recognition ability for (bio)chemical sensing. In this review, basic and widely applied device concepts of silicon-based BioFEDs (ion-sensitive field-effect transistor, silicon nanowire transistor, electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor capacitor, light-addressable potentiometric sensor) are presented and recent progress (from 2019 to early 2021) is discussed. One of the main advantages of BioFEDs is the label-free sensing principle enabling to detect a large variety of biomolecules and bioparticles by their intrinsic charge. The review encompasses applications of BioFEDs for the label-free electrical detection of clinically relevant protein biomarkers, deoxyribonucleic acid molecules and viruses, enzyme-substrate reactions as well as recording of the cell acidification rate (as an indicator of cellular metabolism) and the extracellular potential.
