Currently, most workflow management systems in Grid environments provide push-oriented job distribution strategies, where jobs are explicitly delegated to resources. In those scenarios the dedicated resources execute submitted jobs according to the request of a workflow engine or Grid wide scheduler. This approach has various limitations, particularly if human interactions should be integrated in workflow execution. To support human interactions with the benefit of enabling inter organizational computation and community approaches, this poster paper proposes the idea of a pull-based task distribution strategy. Here, heterogeneous resources, including human interaction, should actively select tasks for execution from a central repository. This leads to special demands regarding security issues like access control. In the established push-based job execution the resources are responsible for granting access to workflows and job initiators. In general this is done by access control lists, where users are explicitly mapped to local accounts according to their policies. In the pull-based approach the resources actively apply for job executions by sending requests to a central task repository. This means that every resource has to be able to authenticate against the repository to be authorized for task execution. In other words the authorization is relocated from the resources to the repository. The poster paper introduces current work regarding to the mentioned security aspects in the pull-based approach within the scope of the project “HiX4AGWS”.
We consider recent reports on small-world topologies of interaction networks derived from the dynamics of spatially extended systems that are investigated in diverse scientific fields such as neurosciences, geophysics, or meteorology. With numerical simulations that mimic typical experimental situations, we have identified an important constraint when characterizing such networks: indications of a small-world topology can be expected solely due to the spatial sampling of the system along with the commonly used time series analysis based approaches to network characterization.
The Newtonian regime of a recent nonlocal extension of general relativity is investigated. Nonlocality is introduced via a scalar “constitutive” kernel in a special case of the translational gauge theory of gravitation, namely, the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity. In this theory, the nonlocal aspect of gravity simulates dark matter. A nonlocal and nonlinear generalization of Poisson’s equation of Newtonian gravitation is presented. The implications of nonlocality for the gravitational physics in the solar system are briefly studied.
In this contribution, we focus on the detection of toxic gases with living eukaryotic cells. A cell-based gas sensor system, able to measure the effects of direct exposure of gases to cells in real-time, was set up. Impedance data as well as oxygen consumption of Chinese hamster lung fibroblast cells (V79) were analysed upon exposure to carbon monoxide (CO). The CO (diluted in wet synthetic air) affects the cell respiration as indicated by an attenuated respiration signal after the CO exposure as well as an instant increase of the capacitive part of the impedance signal during the gas exposure.
Latente Steuern stellen eine Schnittstelle zwischen handelsrechtlicher Rechnungslegung und Steuerrecht dar. Das Verhältnis von Handels- und Steuerrecht ist dabei keinesfalls stetig; vielmehr fordert die Dynamik des deutschen Steuerrechts in vielen Bereichen regelmäßige Anpassungen in der Bilanzierung in Handels- und Steuerbilanz. Dies gilt insbesondere für die Bilanzierung latenter Steuern im handelsrechtlichen Jahresabschluss, welche durch das BilMoG deutlich an Bedeutung gewonnen hat. Neben latenten Steuern auf temporäre Differenzen ist es nunmehr erforderlich, Verlustvorträge und die Folgen der Zinsschranke bei der Berechnung latenter Steuern zu berücksichtigen. Der nachfolgende Beitrag geht auf die Berücksichtigung von Verlust- und Zinsvorträgen und die Berücksichtigungsfähigkeit von EBITDA-Vorträgen bei der Berechnung latenter Steuern ein und beleuchtet dabei insbesondere auch praktische Fragestellungen.
Lightning safety guidelines

This paper introduces lightning to the layman, noting the right behaviour in front of thunderstorms as well as protective measures against lightning. It also contributes to the prevention of lightning injuries and damages. This report was prepared by the authors inside the AHG1 Group for IEC TC81 (Lightning Protection).
The continuously growing amount of renewable sources starts compromising the stability of electrical grids. Contradictory to fossil fuel power plants, energy production of wind and photovoltaic (PV) energy is fluctuating. Although predictions have significantly improved, an outage of multi-MW offshore wind farms poses a challenging problem. One solution could be the integration of storage systems in the grid. After a short overview, this paper focuses on two exemplary battery storage systems, including the required power electronics. The grid integration, as well as the optimal usage of volatile energy reserves, is presented for a 5- kW PV system for home application, as well as for a 100- MW medium-voltage system, intended for wind farm usage. The efficiency and cost of topologies are investigated as a key parameter for large-scale integration of renewable power at medium- and low-voltage.
pH-sensitive properties of barium strontium titanate (BST) high-k thin films as alternative gate material for field-effect capacitive (bio-)chemical sensors based on an electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor system have been investigated. The BST films of different compositions (Ba0.31Sr0.69TiO3, Ba0.25Sr0.75TiO3 and Mg-doped Ba0.8Sr0.2Mg0.1Ti0.9O3) were deposited by pulsed laser deposition technique from targets fabricated by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. The realised sensors have been electrochemically characterised by means of impedance-spectroscopy, capacitance–voltage and constant-capacitance method. The sensors possess a Nernstian-like pH sensitivity in the concentration range between pH 3 and 11 with a response time of 5–10 s. An equivalent circuit model for the BST-based capacitive field-effect sensor is discussed.
Moderne Bauwerke müssen heute eine hohe energetische Leistungsfähigkeit aufweisen und gleichzeitig alle einwirkenden Lasten sicher abtragen. Dies stellt insbesondere in Erdbebengebieten hohe Anforderungen an die verwendeten Baustoffe. Am baupraktischen Beispiel einer Doppelhaushälfte wird demonstriert, dass die Symbiose aus energieeffizientem und gleichzeitig erdbebensicherem Bauen in der höchsten deutschen Erdbebenzone mit monolithischem Ziegelmauerwerk gut realisierbar ist. Als Ziegelmauerwerk werden für die Außenwände wärmetechnisch optimierte Hochlochziegel verwendet, die sowohl die Anforderungen der Energieeinsparverordnung 2009 als auch die Anforderungen an Mauerwerkbaustoffe nach den aktuellen Erdbebennormen erfüllen. Der Erdbebennachweis der Doppelhaushälfte erfolgt mit einem nichtlinearen Nachweisverfahren, das für eine einfache praktische Anwendung programmtechnisch umgesetzt wurde. Für den Nachweis wurden aus zyklischen Schubwandversuchen ermittelte Last-Verformungskurven verwendet. Das gesamte in Deutschland noch nicht normativ geregelte Nachweiskonzept wurde im Rahmen einer Zustimmung im Einzelfall geprüft und genehmigt.
Die Erdbebensicherheit von Gebäuden aus Kalksandsteinmauerwerk ist aktuell nach DIN 4149 mit linearen Verfahren nachzuweisen. Dies führt in der praktischen Anwendung zu großen Problemen, da selbst traditionell übliche Grundrisse teilweise nicht mehr ohne zusätzliche Maßnahmen nachweisbar sind. Zur Lösung dieser Problematik wurden von der deutschen Mauerwerksindustrie auf nationaler und europäischer Ebene Forschungsprojekte initiiert, deren Ergebnisse in Form von statisch nichtlinearen Verfahren Eingang in den Nationalen Anhang zur DIN EN 1998-1 [12] gefunden haben. Mit den Verfahren wird die Nachweissituation zukünftig grundlegend verbessert, da mit diesen die Tragwerksreserven wesentlich besser ausgenutzt werden können. Im Folgenden wird die Anwendung der Verfahren am Beispiel einer Reihenhauszeile aus Kalksandsteinmauerwerk demonstriert. Der Nachweis der Reihenhäuser wurde im Rahmen einer Zustimmung im Einzelfall, die vom Bundesverband Kalksandsteinindustrie eV in Hannover koordiniert wurde, durch unabhängige Gutachter und die Bauaufsicht eingehend geprüft und für richtig befunden. Die Durchführung des Nachweises erfolgte auf Grundlage eines an der RWTH Aachen entwickelten neuen Nachweiskonzeptes. Die baupraktische Anwendbarkeit und einfache Nachvollziehbarkeit dieses Konzepts ist durch eine softwaretechnische Umsetzung sichergestellt.
Capacitive field-effect electrolyte-diamond-insulator-semiconductor (EDIS) structures with O-terminated nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) as sensitive gate material have been realized and investigated for the detection of pH, penicillin concentration, and layer-by-layer adsorption of polyelectrolytes. The surface oxidizing procedure of NCD thin films as well as the seeding and NCD growth process on a Si-SiO2 substrate have been improved to provide high pH-sensitive, non-porous thin films without damage of the underlying SiO2 layer and with a high coverage of O-terminated sites. The NCD surface topography, roughness, and coverage of the surface groups have been characterized by SEM, AFM and XPS methods. The EDIS sensors with O-terminated NCD film treated in oxidizing boiling mixture for 45 min show a pH sensitivity of about 50 mV/pH. The pH-sensitive properties of the NCD have been used to develop an EDIS-based penicillin biosensor with high sensitivity (65-70 mV/decade in the concentration range of 0.25-2.5 mM penicillin G) and low detection limit (5 μM). The results of label-free electrical detection of layer-by-layer adsorption of charged polyelectrolytes are presented, too.
In diesem Beitrag werden Ergebnisse der Entwicklung eines modularen festkörperbasierten Sensorsystems für die Überwachung von Zellkulturfermentationen präsentiert. Zur Messung der Elektrolytleitfähigkeit wurde das Layout von Interdigitalelektroden angepasst, um in vergleichsweise gut leitenden Elektrolyten zu messen. Durch Quervernetzung von Glucose-Oxidase mit Glutaraldehyd und Immobilisierung auf einer Platinelektrode wurde ein amperometrischer Glucosesensor mit einem linearen Messbereich von bis zu 2 mM und einer Sensitivität von 168 nA/mM realisiert.
Two- and three-dimensional avalanche dynamics models are being increasingly used in hazard-mitigation studies. These models can provide improved and more accurate results for hazard mapping than the simple one-dimensional models presently used in practice. However, two- and three-dimensional models generate an extensive amount of output data, making the interpretation of simulation results more difficult. To perform a simulation in three-dimensional terrain, numerical models require a digital elevation model, specification of avalanche release areas (spatial extent and volume), selection of solution methods, finding an adequate calculation resolution and, finally, the choice of friction parameters. In this paper, the importance and difficulty of correctly setting up and analysing the results of a numerical avalanche dynamics simulation is discussed. We apply the two-dimensional simulation program RAMMS to the 1968 extreme avalanche event In den Arelen. We show the effect of model input variations on simulation results and the dangers and complexities in their interpretation.
Numerical avalanche dynamics models have become an essential part of snow engineering. Coupled with field observations and historical records, they are especially helpful in understanding avalanche flow in complex terrain. However, their application poses several new challenges to avalanche engineers. A detailed understanding of the avalanche phenomena is required to construct hazard scenarios which involve the careful specification of initial conditions (release zone location and dimensions) and definition of appropriate friction parameters. The interpretation of simulation results requires an understanding of the numerical solution schemes and easy to use visualization tools. We discuss these problems by presenting the computer model RAMMS, which was specially designed by the SLF as a practical tool for avalanche engineers. RAMMS solves the depth-averaged equations governing avalanche flow with accurate second-order numerical solution schemes. The model allows the specification of multiple release zones in three-dimensional terrain. Snow cover entrainment is considered. Furthermore, two different flow rheologies can be applied: the standard Voellmy–Salm (VS) approach or a random kinetic energy (RKE) model, which accounts for the random motion and inelastic interaction between snow granules. We present the governing differential equations, highlight some of the input and output features of RAMMS and then apply the models with entrainment to simulate two well-documented avalanche events recorded at the Vallée de la Sionne test site.

The potential of electronic markets in enabling innovative product bundles through flexible and sustainable partnerships is not yet fully exploited in the telecommunication industry. One reason is that bundling requires seamless de-assembling and re-assembling of business processes, whilst processes in telecommunication companies are often product-dependent and hard to virtualize. We propose a framework for the planning of the virtualization of processes, intended to assist the decision maker in prioritizing the processes to be virtualized: (a) we transfer the virtualization pre-requisites stated by the Process Virtualization Theory in the context of customer-oriented processes in the telecommunication industry and assess their importance in this context, (b) we derive IT-oriented requirements for the removal of virtualization barriers and highlight their demand on changes at different levels of the organization. We present a first evaluation of our approach in a case study and report on lessons learned and further steps to be performed.
Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis are widely used for the large-scale industrial production of proteins. These strains can efficiently secrete proteins into the culture medium using the general secretion (Sec) pathway. A characteristic feature of all secreted proteins is their N-terminal signal peptides, which are recognized by the secretion machinery. Here, we have studied the production of an industrially important secreted protease, namely, subtilisin BPN′ from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. One hundred seventy-three signal peptides originating from B. subtilis and 220 signal peptides from the B. licheniformis type strain were fused to this secretion target and expressed in B. subtilis, and the resulting library was analyzed by high-throughput screening for extracellular proteolytic activity. We have identified a number of signal peptides originating from both organisms which produced significantly increased yield of the secreted protease. Interestingly, we observed that levels of extracellular protease were improved not only in B. subtilis, which was used as the screening host, but also in two different B. licheniformis strains. To date, it is impossible to predict which signal peptide will result in better secretion and thus an improved yield of a given extracellular target protein. Our data show that screening a library consisting of homologous and heterologous signal peptides fused to a target protein can identify more-effective signal peptides, resulting in improved protein export not only in the original screening host but also in different production strains.
In Valais, Switzerland, Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) are declining, mainly following drought. To assess the impact of drought on tree growth and survival, an irrigation experiment was initiated in 2003 in a mature pine forest, approximately doubling the annual precipitation. Tree crown transparency (lack of foliage) and leaf area index (LAI) were annually assessed. Seven irrigated and six control trees were felled in 2006, and needles, stem discs and branches were taken for growth analysis. Irrigation in 2004 and 2005, both with below-average precipitation, increased needle size, area and mass, stem growth and, with a 1-year delay, shoot length. This led to a relative decrease in tree crown transparency (−14%) and to an increase in stand LAI (+20%). Irrigation increased needle length by 70%, shoot length by 100% and ring width by 120%, regardless of crown transparency. Crown transparency correlated positively with mean needle size, shoot length and ring width and negatively with specific leaf area. Trees with high crown transparency (low growth, short needles) experienced similar increases in needle mass and growth with irrigation than trees with low transparency (high growth, long needles), indicating that seemingly declining trees were able to ‘recover’ when water supply became sufficient. A simple drought index before and during the irrigation explained most of the variation found in the parameters for both irrigated and control trees.
• Most of the edible forest mushrooms are mycorrhizal and depend on carbohydrates produced by the associated trees. Fruiting patterns of these fungi are not yet fully understood since climatic factors alone do not completely explain mushroom occurrence.
• The objective of this study was to retrospectively find out if changing tree growth following an increment thinning has influenced the diversity patterns and productivity of associated forest mushrooms in the fungus reserve La Chanéaz, Switzerland.
• The results reveal a clear temporal relationship between the thinning, the growth reaction of trees and the reaction of the fungal community, especially for the ectomycorrhizal species. The tree-ring width of the formerly suppressed beech trees and the fruit body number increased after thinning, leading to a significantly positive correlation between fruit body numbers and tree-ring width.
• Fruit body production was influenced by previous annual tree growth, the best accordance was found between fruit body production and the tree-ring width two years previously.
• The results support the hypothesis that ectomycorrhizal fruit body production must be linked with the growth of the associated host trees. Moreover, the findings indicate the importance of including mycorrhizal fungi as important players when discussing a tree as a carbon source or sink.
Fast response of Scots pine to improved water availability reflected in tree-ring width and δ13C

Drought-induced forest decline, like the Scots pine mortality in inner-Alpine valleys, will gain in importance as the frequency and severity of drought events are expected to increase. To understand how chronic drought affects tree growth and tree-ring δ13C values, we studied mature Scots pine in an irrigation experiment in an inner-Alpine valley. Tree growth and isotope analyses were carried out at the annual and seasonal scale. At the seasonal scale, maximum δ13C values were measured after the hottest and driest period of the year, and were associated with decreasing growth rates. Inter-annual δ13C values in early- and latewood showed a strong correlation with annual climatic conditions and an immediate decrease as a response to irrigation. This indicates a tight coupling between wood formation and the freshly produced assimilates for trees exposed to chronic drought. This rapid appearance of the isotopic signal is a strong indication for an immediate and direct transfer of newly synthesized assimilates for biomass production. The fast appearance and the distinct isotopic signal suggest a low availability of old stored carbohydrates. If this was a sign for C-storage depletion, an increasing mortality could be expected when stressors increase the need for carbohydrate for defence, repair or regeneration.
Low emission zones and truck bans, the rising price of diesel and increases in road tolls: all of these factors are putting serious pressure on the transport industry. Commercial vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers are in the process of identifying new solutions to these challenges as part of their efforts to meet the EEV (enhanced environmentally friendly vehicle) limits, which are currently the most robust European exhaust and emissions standards for trucks and buses.

This paper proposes an approach to the choice and evaluation of engineering models with the aid of a typical application in geotechnics. An important issue in the construction of shallow tunnels, especially in weak ground conditions, is the tunnel face stability. Various theoretical and numerical models for predicting the necessary support pressure have been put forth in the literature. In this paper, we combine laboratory experiments performed at the University of Innsbruck with current methods of uncertainty and sensitivity analysis for assessing adequacy, predictive power and robustness of the models. The major issues are the handling of the twofold uncertainty of test results and of model predictions as well as the decision about what are the influential input parameters.
In this extended abstract we describe the robot programming and planning language READYLOG, a GOLOG dialect which was developed to support the decision making of robots acting in dynamic real-time domains like robotic soccer. The formal framework of READYLOG, which is based on the situation calculus, features imperative control structures like loops and procedures, allows for decision-theoretic planning, and accounts for a continuously changing world. We developed high-level controllers in READYLOG for our soccer robots in RoboCup’s Middle-size league, but also for service robots and for autonomous agents in interactive computer games.
Hybrid control for autonomous systems — Integrating learning, deliberation and reactive control

We analyze the influence of dipole-dipole interactions in an electromagnetically induced transparency set up for a density at the onset of cooperative effects. To this end, we include mean-field models for the influence of local-field corrections and radiation trapping into our calculation. We show both analytically and numerically that the polarization contribution to the local field strongly modulates the phase of a weak pulse. We give an intuitive explanation for this local-field-induced phase modulation and demonstrate that it distinctively differs from the nonlinear self-phase-modulation that a strong pulse experiences in a Kerr medium.
Studying global change through investigation of the plastic responses of xylem anatomy in tree rings

Variability in xylem anatomy is of interest to plant scientists because of the role water transport plays in plant performance and survival. Insights into plant adjustments to changing environmental conditions have mainly been obtained through structural and functional comparative studies between taxa or within taxa on contrasting sites or along environmental gradients. Yet, a gap exists regarding the study of hydraulic adjustments in response to environmental changes over the lifetimes of plants. In trees, dated tree-ring series are often exploited to reconstruct dynamics in ecological conditions, and recent work in which wood-anatomical variables have been used in dendrochronology has produced promising results. Environmental signals identified in water-conducting cells carry novel information reflecting changes in regional conditions and are mostly related to short, sub-annual intervals. Although the idea of investigating environmental signals through wood anatomical time series goes back to the 1960s, it is only recently that low-cost computerized image-analysis systems have enabled increased scientific output in this field. We believe that the study of tree-ring anatomy is emerging as a promising approach in tree biology and climate change research, particularly if complemented by physiological and ecological studies. This contribution presents the rationale, the potential, and the methodological challenges of this innovative approach.
Background
To demonstrate the applicability of acoustic cardiac triggering (ACT) for imaging of the heart at ultrahigh magnetic fields (7.0 T) by comparing phonocardiogram, conventional vector electrocardiogram (ECG) and traditional pulse oximetry (POX) triggered 2D CINE acquisitions together with (i) a qualitative image quality analysis, (ii) an assessment of the left ventricular function parameter and (iii) an examination of trigger reliability and trigger detection variance derived from the signal waveforms.
Results
ECG was susceptible to severe distortions at 7.0 T. POX and ACT provided waveforms free of interferences from electromagnetic fields or from magneto-hydrodynamic effects. Frequent R-wave mis-registration occurred in ECG-triggered acquisitions with a failure rate of up to 30% resulting in cardiac motion induced artifacts. ACT and POX triggering produced images free of cardiac motion artefacts. ECG showed a severe jitter in the R-wave detection. POX also showed a trigger jitter of approximately Δt = 72 ms which is equivalent to two cardiac phases. ACT showed a jitter of approximately Δt = 5 ms only. ECG waveforms revealed a standard deviation for the cardiac trigger offset larger than that observed for ACT or POX waveforms.
Image quality assessment showed that ACT substantially improved image quality as compared to ECG (image quality score at end-diastole: ECG = 1.7 ± 0.5, ACT = 2.4 ± 0.5, p = 0.04) while the comparison between ECG vs. POX gated acquisitions showed no significant differences in image quality (image quality score: ECG = 1.7 ± 0.5, POX = 2.0 ± 0.5, p = 0.34).
Conclusions
The applicability of acoustic triggering for cardiac CINE imaging at 7.0 T was demonstrated. ACT's trigger reliability and fidelity are superior to that of ECG and POX. ACT promises to be beneficial for cardiovascular magnetic resonance at ultra-high field strengths including 7.0 T.
Glasfaserbasierte Breitbandnetze werden in Deutschland auch aufgrund der Wirtschaftskrise nur sehr zögerlich ausgebaut. Markus Fredebeul-Krein hält eine staatliche Subventionierung der Breitbandnetze nur bedingt für gerechtfertigt. Private Investoren benötigen jedoch dringend Planungssicherheit durch verlässliche Regulierungsvorschriften.
In den letzten Jahren haben in Deutschland mehrere Bundesländer Studiengebühren eingeführt. Seitdem wird in der Politik heftig über das Für und Wider diskutiert. Von den Gegnern wird häufig das Argument vorgebracht, Studiengebühren seien sozial ungerecht und würden insbesondere einkommensschwache Bevölkerungsschichten von einem Studium abhalten. Bestätigt werden sie von den Zahlen aus Umfragen, denen zufolge über 70 Prozent derjenigen, die sich gegen ein Studium entscheiden, finanzielle Gründe für einen Studienverzicht anführen. Befürworter halten dem entgegen, Studiengebühren seien angesichts knapper öffentlicher Kassen unbedingt notwendig, da nur so die Qualität der Lehre aufrechterhalten bzw. verbessert werden könne. Zudem würden Studiengebühren die sozialen Bildungsbarrieren keineswegs erhöhen, was auch daran erkennbar sei, dass infolge der Studiengebühren die Zahl der Studierenden nicht zurückgegangen ist. Der vorliegende Artikel leistet einen Beitrag zu dieser Debatte, indem er die an einer Hochschule in Nordrhein-Westfalen gesammelten Erfahrungen mit Studiengebühren auswertet
This paper develops an investment/pricing model for the deployment of basic broadband networks which, along with other applications, is applicable to public–private partnership projects. In particular, a new investment model is suggested to be used for finance deployment over a longer term by enabling both private and public investors to participate in the roll-out of next generation access (NGA) infrastructure. This so-called “long-term risk sharing concept” has several notable benefits compared with the traditional regulatory approach. Above all, the model enables both private operators and public authorities to share the risk of investing in NGA infrastructure. Thus the model offers a way for public authorities to achieve a timely and countrywide roll-out of NGA networks, including in areas where NGA investment would otherwise not occur.
The present article describes a standard instrument for the continuous online determination of retinal vessel diameters, the commercially available retinal vessel analyzer. This report is intended to provide informed guidelines for measuring ocular blood flow with this system. The report describes the principles underlying the method and the instruments currently available, and discusses clinical protocol and the specific parameters measured by the system. Unresolved questions and the possible limitations of the technique are also discussed.
Additive Manufacturing of metal parts by Selective Laser Melting has become a powerful tool for the direct manufacturing of complex parts mainly for the aerospace and medical industry. With the introduction of its desktop machine, Realizer targeted the dental market. The contribution describes the special features of the machine, discusses details of the process and shows manufacturing results focused on metal dental devices.
The Solar-Institute Jülich (SIJ) has initiated the construction of the first and only German solar tower power plant and is now involved in the accompanying research. The power plant for experimental and demonstration purposes in the town of Jülich started supplying electric energy in the beginning of 2008. The central receiver plant features as central innovation an open volumetric receiver, consisting of porous ceramic elements that simultaneously absorb the concentrated sunlight and transfer the heat to ambient air passing through the pores so that an average temperature of 680°C is reached. The subsequent steam cycle generates up to 1.5 MWe. A main field of research at the SIJ is the optimization of the absorber structures. To analyze the capability of new absorber specimens a special test facility was developed and set up in the laboratory. A high-performance near-infrared radiator offers for single test samples a variable and repeatable beam with a power of up to 320 kW/m² peak. The temperatures achieved on the absorber surface can reach more than 1000°C. To suck ambient air through the open absorber - like on the tower - it is mounted on a special blower system. An overview about the test facility and some recent results will be presented.
The importance of validating and reproducing the outcome of computational processes is fundamental to many application domains. Assuring the provenance of workflows will likely become even more important with respect to the incorporation of human tasks to standard workflows by emerging standards such as WS-HumanTask. This paper addresses this trend by an actor-based workflow approach that actively support provenance. It proposes a framework to track and store provenance information automatically that applies for various workflow management systems. In particular, the introduced provenance framework supports the documentation of workflows in a legally binding way. The authors therefore use the concept of layered XML documents, i.e. history-tracing XML. Furthermore, the proposed provenance framework enables the executors (actors) of a particular workflow task to attest their operations and the associated results by integrating digital XML signatures.
Die Spritzbetonbauweise hat sich im Tunnelbau seit Jahren bewährt. Spritzbeton wird als unbewehrter Beton, in Verbindung mit Bewehrung sowie als Stahlfaserspritzbeton eingesetzt. Bei den meisten Tunnelschalen aus Stahlfaserspritzbeton werden Stahlfasern derzeit nur als konstruktive Bewehrung verwendet. Die Faserzugabe führt zu einer nennenswerten Erhöhung der Bruchenergie und somit zu einer höheren Zähigkeit des sonst spröden Materials und damit zu einer höheren Sicherheit.
Stahlfaserspritzbeton kann auch anstelle von Spritzbeton mit statisch erforderlicher Mattenbewehrung eingesetzt werden. Die Bemessung erfolgt dann unter Berücksichtigung der Nachrisszugfestigkeit. Diese kann wie bei Stahlfaserbeton an Biegebalken ermittelt werden, die aus größeren Proben herausgesägt werden. Anhand von verschiedenen Beispielen werden die unterschiedlichen Anwendungen aufgezeigt und die dafür erforderlichen Prüfungen vorgestellt.
Recently, we introduced and mathematically analysed a new method for grid deformation (Grajewski et al., 2009) [15] we call basic deformation method (BDM) here. It generalises the method proposed by Liao et al. (Bochev et al., 1996; Cai et al., 2004; Liao and Anderson, 1992) [4], [6], [20]. In this article, we employ the BDM as core of a new multilevel deformation method (MDM) which leads to vast improvements regarding robustness, accuracy and speed. We achieve this by splitting up the deformation process in a sequence of easier subproblems and by exploiting grid hierarchy. Being of optimal asymptotic complexity, we experience speed-ups up to a factor of 15 in our test cases compared to the BDM. This gives our MDM the potential for tackling large grids and time-dependent problems, where possibly the grid must be dynamically deformed once per time step according to the user's needs. Moreover, we elaborate on implementational aspects, in particular efficient grid searching, which is a key ingredient of the BDM.
Background: To elaborate the impact of new haemostatic agents we developed an instrument for the pressure-controlled induction of blunt liver injuries in a porcine animal model. Materials and Methods: A dilutional coagulopathy of 80% of animal blood volume was induced in 9 anaesthetized pigs. Animals were randomly assigned to be injured with a force of 112 Newton (N) (n = 1), 224 ± 19 N (n = 4) or 355 ± 35 N (n = 4). The impact of injury was measured by blood loss, survival time and coagulation parameters. Liver histology was obtained to evaluate the degree of liver injury. Results: The profound haemodilution resulted in a significant alteration of all coagulation parameters. After inflicting the injury with 355 ± 35 N, both the survival time (30 ± 9 min; p = 0.006) and blood loss (68 ± 16 ml min–1, p = 0.002) were significantly different as compared to injuries with 224 ± 19 N (survival time: 76 ± 20 min, blood loss: 23 ± 4 ml min–1). In contrast, an injury with 112 N led to an insignificant blood loss of only 239 ml. Conclusion: We developed a pressure-controlled clamp that allows for the induction of blunt liver traumas with highly reproducible injuries with a positive correlation with blood loss and survival.
The cost of solar tower power plants is dominated by the heliostat field making up roughly 50% of investment costs. Classical heliostat design is dominated by mirrors brought into position by steel structures and drives that guarantee high accuracies under wind loads and thermal stress situations. A large fraction of costs is caused by the stiffness requirements of the steel structure, typically resulting in ~ 20 kg/m² steel per mirror area. The typical cost figure of heliostats (figure mentioned by Solucar at Solar Paces Conference, Seville, 2006) is currently in the area of 150 €/m² caused by the increasing price of the necessary raw materials. An interesting option to reduce costs lies in a heliostat design where all moving parts are protected from wind loads. In this way, drives and mechanical layout may be kept less robust, thereby reducing material input and costs. In order to keep the heliostat at an appropriate size, small mirrors (around 10x10 cm²) have to be used, which are placed in a box with a transparent cover. Innovative drive systems are developed in order to obtain a cost-effective design. A 0,5x0,5 m² demonstration unit will be constructed. Tests of the unit are carried out with a high-precision artificial sun unit that imitates the sun’s path with an accuracy of less than 0.5 mrad and creates a beam of parallel light with a divergence of less than 4 mrad.
During the development process of a complex technical product, one widely used and important technique is accelerated testing where the applied stress on a component is chosen to exceed the reference stress, i.e. the stress encountered in field operation, in order to reduce the time to failure. For that, the reference stress has to be known. Since a complex technical product may fail regarding numerous failure modes, stress in general is highly dimensional rather than scalar. In addition, customers use their products individually, i.e. field operation should be described by a distribution rather than by one scalar stress value. In this paper, a way to span the customer usage space is shown. It allows the identification of worst case reference stress profiles in significantly reduced dimensions with minimal loss of information. The application example shows that even for a complex product like a combustion engine, stress information can be compressed significantly. With low measurement effort it turned out that only three reference stress cycles were sufficient to cover a broad range of customer stress variety.
Background: One of the most prominent neurobiological models of alexithymia assumes an altered function of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) as the crucial neural correlate of alexithymia. So far functional imaging studies have yielded inconclusive results. Therefore, we tested this hypothesis in healthy alexithymics and nonalexithymics in an event-related fMRI study.
Methods: Thirty high- and 30 low-alexithymic right-handed male subjects (selected by the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale, TAS-20) were investigated with event-related fMRI using a picture viewing paradigm. The stimuli consisted of happy, fearful and neutral facial expressions (Ekman-Friesen) as well as positive, negative and neutral pictures from the International Affective Picture System.
Results: Contrasting the high-alexithymic with the low-alexithymic group we observed increased activation of the supragenual ACC for different emotional valences as well as for different emotional stimuli. Moreover, there was a positive correlation of the ACC with the individual TAS-20 scores but no correlations with the individual Beck Depression Inventory scores. Additionally, there was no difference in activity of the amygdala.
Conclusions: We demonstrated that the supragenual ACC is constantly activated more strongly in alexithymic subjects and that this activation is related to the symptoms of alexithymia and not to associated symptoms such as depression. Therefore, our findings support the hypothesis of an altered function of the ACC in alexithymia.
Differential modulation of valence and arousal in high-alexithymic and low-alexithymic individuals

High-alexithymic individuals are characterized by an impaired ability to identify and communicate emotions whereas low-alexithymic individuals have a wide-ranging ability to deal with emotions. This study examined the hypothesis that valence and arousal modifications of emotional stimuli differentially modulate cortical regions in high-alexithymic and low-alexithymic individuals. To this end, 28 high-alexithymic and 25 low-alexithymic individuals were investigated with event-related fMRI using visual emotional stimuli. We found differential neural activations in the dorsal anterior cingulate, the insula and the amygdala. We suggest that these differences may account for the impaired ability of high-alexithymic individuals to appropriately handle emotional stimuli.
Following the success of PET/CT during the last decade and the recent increasing proliferation of SPECT/CT, another hybrid imaging instrument has been gaining more and more interest: MR-PET. First combined, simultaneous PET and MR studies carried out in small animals demonstrated the feasibility of the new approach. Concurrently, some prototypes of an MR-PET scanner for simultaneous human brain studies have been built, their performance is being tested and preliminary applications have already been shown. Through this pioneering work, it has become clear that advances in the detector design are necessary for further optimization.
Recently, the different issues related to the present state and future prospects of MR-PET were presented and discussed during an international 2-day workshop at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, held after, and in conjunction with, the 2008 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference in Dresden, Germany on October 27–28, 2008. The topics ranged from small animal MR-PET imaging to human MR-BrainPET imaging, new detector developments, challenges/opportunities for ultra-high field MR-PET imaging and considerations of possible future research and clinical applications. This report presents a critical summary of the contributions made to the workshop.

Unter Energieeffizienz wird verstanden, dass ein definiertes Ziel mit möglichst wenig Energie erreicht wird. Im Beitrag wird zunächst eine Formel zur Berechnung der Gesamtenergieeffizienz eines Gebäudes angegeben. Darauf aufbauend wird ein 3-Säulen-Modell zur Energieeinsparung vorgeschlagen. Es beinhaltet vereinfachte Verfahren zur Berechnung der Betriebseigenschaften von Heizanlagen, raumlufttechnischen Anlagen und Kühl- und Kaltwasseranlagen. Am Beispiel einer RLT-Anlage wird die Vorgehensweise der Bewertung näher erläutert. Zusammenfassend wird festgestellt, dass das vereinfachte Verfahren eine schnelle und sichere energetische Bewertung der genannten Anlagen erlaubt,, zu Präsenzwissen führt, die Haupteinflussgrößen aufzeigt und eine Anlagenbewertung ohne Gebäudebewertung gewährleistet. Das vereinfachte Verfahren wird im Frühjahr 2011 verfügbar sein. Es soll Bestandteil der DIN V 18599 werden, und die EnEV 2012 soll darauf Bezug nehmen.
A novel scheme for precise diagnostics and effective stabilization of currents in a fuel cell stack

A novel scheme for detecting inhomogeneous internal currents in a fuel cell stack is presented. In this paper the scheme is investigated for the case that the flow field plates consist of graphite. Then plates of high conductivity, e.g. aluminium between the flow field plates together with small slits in these plates have three effects: (a) Whenever a local inhomogeneity of the electric current occurs at a particular cell in the stack, this will induce a surface current close to that cell perpendicular to the averaged current. This current can be detected. (b) The plates of high conductivity completely prevent the inhomogeneities from spreading to neighbouring cells. (c) Even at the particular cell the inhomogeneity is suppressed as far as possible. Thus this scheme leads to much better diagnostic possibilities and at the same time reduces electric instabilities to an extent, where they probably become harmless. This scheme will first be explained for a simple model to clarify the idea. However, very precise three dimensional computations using realistic parameters are presented, corroborating the results of the simple model.
A novel tomographic scheme for analysing the state of any single membrane electrode assembly (MEA) in a stack is suggested. Plates of very high conductivity placed between every fuel cell and slitted in an appropriate manner cause surface currents at well-defined locations of the stack. We show that knowing these surface currents, information about anomalies of the currents in a MEA can be obtained using the methods of tomography. The results are mathematically not unique. However, when assuming plausible defect structures, one can exclude improbable deficiencies by applying a special form of simulated annealing. We present numerical calculations of typical examples demonstrating that the essential defects of the MEA in any single cell of the stack can be detected and their extent can be determined.
Durch rapide gesellschaftliche Veränderungen und neue Anforderungen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt gewinnt die akademische berufliche Weiterbildung zunehmend an Bedeutung. Die Nachfrage nach entsprechenden Angeboten ist sowohl seitens der Unternehmen als auch der Arbeitnehmer/-innen hoch. Die Hochschulen sind aufgefordert, darauf zu reagieren und Wege für lebenslanges Lernen aufzuzeigen, indem sie außerhalb der Hochschule erworbene Kenntnisse auf Hochschulabschlüsse anerkennen und Möglichkeiten schaffen, diese Kenntnisse mit dem Ziel weiterzuentwickeln, einen akademischen Abschluss zu erreichen. Dieser Beitrag stellt einen Studiengang vor, der es Berufstätigen ermöglicht, durch die Anrechnung beruflich erworbener Kompetenzen bis zu 50 Prozent der zu erbringenden Studienleistung abzugelten.
Objective
To investigate whether functional brain networks of epilepsy patients treated with antiepileptic medication differ from networks of healthy controls even during the seizure-free interval.
Methods
We applied different rules to construct binary and weighted networks from EEG and MEG data recorded under a resting-state eyes-open and eyes-closed condition from 21 epilepsy patients and 23 healthy controls. The average shortest path length and the clustering coefficient served as global statistical network characteristics.
Results
Independent on the behavioral condition, epileptic brains exhibited a more regular functional network structure. Similarly, the eyes-closed condition was characterized by a more regular functional network structure in both groups. The amount of network reorganization due to behavioral state changes was similar in both groups. Consistent findings could be achieved for networks derived from EEG but hardly from MEG recordings, and network construction rules had a rather strong impact on our findings.
Conclusions
Despite the locality of the investigated processes epileptic brain networks differ in their global characteristics from non-epileptic brain networks. Further methodological developments are necessary to improve the characterization of disturbed and normal functional networks.
Significance
An increased regularity and a diminished modulation capability appear characteristic of epileptic brain networks.
Der folgende Bericht fasst Erfahrungen zusammen, die in großen Entwicklungsprojekten der Firma Ericsson über mehrere Jahre gesammelt wurden. Ziel war dabei nicht, agile Methoden und Techniken einzusetzen - Agilität war zu der Zeit noch kein Hype-Thema. Vielmehr wurden Schwächen in den eigenen Projekten identifiziert und verbessert. Der Erfahrungsbericht vergleicht Verbesserungen in diesen Projekten mit den Ansätzen der agilen Entwicklung. Als Ergebnis werden folgende Punkte festgehalten: Erstens, einige Praktiken und Werte der agilen Entwicklung lassen sich auch in Großprojekten einsetzen. Zweitens, bei der Skalierung für Großprojekte werden diese Praktiken langsamer getaktet. Drittens, agile Entwicklung ist nicht nur eine Reihe von Praktiken und Werten, agile Entwicklung ist vielmehr auch eine Frage der Entwicklungs- und Projektkultur. Diese kulturelle Änderung lässt sich in Großprojekten deutlich langsamer umsetzen.
Large power plants can be endangered by lightning strikes with possible consequences regarding their safety and availability. A special scenario is a lightning strike to the HV overhead transmission line close to the power plant's connection to the power grid. If then additionally a so-called shielding failure of the overhead ground wire on top of the overhead transmission line is assumed, i.e. the lightning strikes directly into a phase conductor, this is an extreme electromagnetic disturbance. The paper deals with the numerical simulation of such a lightning strike and the consequences on the components of the power plant's auxiliary power network connected to different voltage levels.
Planning the air-terminations for a structure to be protected the use of the rolling-sphere method (electro-geometrical model) is the best way from the physics of lightning point-of-view. Therefore, international standards prefer this method. However, using the rolling-sphere method only results in possible point-of-strikes on a structure without giving information about the probability of strikes at the individual points compared to others.
Realization of a calorimetric gas sensor on polyimide foil for applications in aseptic food industry

A calorimetric gas sensor is presented for the monitoring of gas-phase H2O2 at elevated temperature during sterilization processes in aseptic food industry. The sensor consists of two temperature-sensitive thin-film resistances built up on a polyimide foil with a thickness of 25 μm, which are passivated with a layer of SU-8 photo resist and catalytically activated with manganese(IV) oxide. Instead of an active heating structure, the calorimetric sensor utilizes the elevated temperature of an evaporated H2O2 aerosol. In an experimental set-up, the sensor has shown a sensitivity of 4.78 °C/(%v/v) in a H2O2 concentration range of 0 to 10% v/v at an evaporation temperature of 240 ∘C. Furthermore, the sensor possesses the same, unchanged sensor signal even at varied evaporation temperatures of the gas stream. The sensor characterization demonstrates the suitability of the calorimetric gas sensor for monitoring the efficiency of sterilization processes.
In aseptischen Abfüllsystemen wird Wasserstoffperoxid in der Gasphase aufgrund der stark oxidativen Wirkung zur Packstoffentkeimung eingesetzt. Dabei wird die Effizienz der Entkeimung im Wesentlichen von der vorliegenden H2O2-Konzentration im Packstoff bestimmt. Zur Inline-Überwachung der H2O2-Konzentration wurde ein kalorimetrischer Gassensor auf Basis einer flexiblen Polyimidfolie aus temperatursensitiven Dünnschicht-Widerständen und Mangan(IV)-oxid als katalytische Transducerschicht realisiert. Der Sensor weist ein lineares Ansprechverhalten mit einer Sensitivität von 7,15 °C/Vol.-% in einem H2O2-Konzentrationsbereich von 0 bis 8 Vol.-% auf. Weiterhin wurde zur Auslesung des Sensorsignals eine RFID-Elektronik, bestehend aus einem Sensor-Tag und einer Sende-/Empfangseinheit ausgelegt, sowie eine Abfolge des Messzyklus aufgestellt. Im weiteren Verlauf soll der kalorimetrische Gassensor mit der RFID-Elektronik gekoppelt und in eine Testverpackung zur Inline-Überwachung der H2O2-Konzentration in aseptischen Abfüllsystemen implementiert werden.
Various models have been proposed for the prediction of the necessary support pressure at the face of a shallow tunnel. To assess their quality, the collapse of a tunnel face was modelled with small-scale model tests at single gravity. The development of the failure mechanism and the support force at the face in dry sand were investigated. The observed displacement patterns show a negligible influence of overburden on the extent and evolution of the failure zone. The latter is significantly influenced, though, by the initial density of the sand: in dense sand a chimney-wedge-type collapse mechanism developed, which propagated towards the soil surface. Initially, loose sand did not show any discrete collapse mechanism. The necessary support force was neither influenced by the overburden nor the initial density. A comparison with quantitative predictions by several theoretical models showed that the measured necessary support pressure is overestimated by most of the models. Those by Vermeer/Ruse and Léca/Dormieux showed the best agreement to the measurements.

Sie können die Beziehungen zwischen den Disziplinen fördern, indem sie bereits erzielte Arbeitsergebnisse disziplinenübergreifend bekannt machen und dadurch dazu beitragen, Synergiepotenziale und mögliche Kooperationspartner zu identifizieren.
Purpose: Image analysis by the retinal vessel analyzer (RVA) observes retinal vessels in their dynamic state online noninvasively along a chosen vessel segment. It has been found that high-frequency diameter changes in the retinal artery blood column along the vessel increase significantly in anamnestically healthy volunteers with increasing age and in patients with glaucoma during vascular dilation. This study was undertaken to investigate whether longitudinal sections of the retinal artery blood column are altered in systemic hypertension.
Methods: Retinal arteries of 15 untreated patients with essential arterial hypertension (age, 50.9 ± 11.9 years) and of 15 age-matched anamnestically healthy volunteers were examined by RVA. After baseline assessment, a monochromatic luminance flicker (530–600 nm; 12.5 Hz; 20 s) was applied to evoke retinal vasodilation. Differences in amplitude and frequency of spatial artery blood column diameter change along segments (longitudinal arterial profiles) of 1 mm in length were measured and analyzed using Fourier transformation.
Results: In the control group, average reduced power spectra (ARPS) of longitudinal arterial profiles did not differ when arteries changed from constriction to dilation. In the systemic hypertension group, ARPS during constriction, baseline, and restoration were identical and differed from ARPS during dilation (P < 0.05). Longitudinal arterial profiles in both groups showed significant dissimilitude at baseline and restoration (P < 0.05).
Conclusions: The retinal artery blood column demonstrates microstructural alterations in systemic hypertension and is less irregular along the vessel axis during vessel dilation. These microstructural changes may be an indication of alterations in vessel wall rigidity, vascular endothelial function, and smooth muscle cells in this disease, leading to impaired perfusion and regulation.
In der biopharmazeutischen Industrie werden rekombinante Proteine und monoklonale Antikörper in Zellkulturfermentationen produziert, da nur humane oder tierische Zelllinien über die Fähigkeit der Glykosylierung verfügen. Um hohe Produktausbeuten in ausgezeichneter Qualität zu erzielen, ist eine funktionstüchtige Prozesskontrolle unerlässlich. Hierzu wurde in Kooperation mit der Firma Hitec Zang GmbH die HiSense Präzisionsabgasanalytik entwickelt, die auf Basis der vollautomatischen Ermittlung des Respirationsquotienten (RQ; Verhältnis vonKohlendioxidbildungsrate (CER) zu Sauerstoffaufnahmerate (OTR)) einen Fermentationsprozess nicht-invasiv überwacht. Der RQ kann in Hybridoma- und CHO-Zellen (s. Abb.) in sowohl serumhaltigen als auch serumfreien Medien erfolgreich ermittelt werden. Hier spiegeln die CER und die OTR das Wachstumsverhalten der kultivierten CHO-Zellen wider. Der RQ nimmt dabei Werte zwischen 0,9 und 1,2 an. Dies lässt auf verschiedene Stoffwechselaktivitäten schließen. Da die momentane industrielle Prozesskontrolle auf gemessenen Sauerstoffaufnahmeraten oder entsprechende Offline-Analytiken der Metaboliten basieren, soll durch die vollautomatische RQ-Ermittlung ein neues Verfahren zur Fermentationsüberwachung etabliert werden. Bisher war diese, in bakteriellen Kultivierungen standardisierte Methode, aufgrund der schwierigen CER-Berechnung bei Zellkulturen keine adäquate Alternative.
Purpose:
MRI plays a leading diagnostic role in assessing the musculoskeletal (MSK) system and is well established for most questions at clinically used field strengths (up to 3 T). However, there are still limitations in imaging early stages of cartilage degeneration, very fine tendons and ligaments, or in locating nerve lesions, for example. 7 T MRI of the knee has already received increasing attention in the current published literature, but there is a strong need to develop new radiofrequency (RF) coils to assess more regions of the MSK system. In this work, an eight-channel transmit/receive RF array was built as a multipurpose coil for imaging some of the thus far neglected regions. An extensive coil characterization protocol and first in vivo results of the human wrist, shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle imaged at 7 T will be presented.
Methods:
Eight surface loop coils with a dimension ofurn:x-wiley:00942405:media:mp7176:mp7176-math-0001 were machined from FR4 circuit board material. To facilitate easy positioning, two coil clusters, each with four loop elements, were combined to one RF transmit/receive array. An overlapped and shifted arrangement of the coil elements was chosen to reduce the mutual inductance between neighboring coils. A phantom made of body-simulating liquid was used for tuning and matching on the bench. Afterward, the S-parameters were verified on a human wrist, elbow, and shoulder. For safety validation, a detailed compliance test was performed including full wave simulations of the RF field distribution and the corresponding specific absorption rate (SAR) for all joints. In vivo images of four volunteers were assessed with gradient echo and spin echo sequences modified to obtain optimal image contrast, full anatomic coverage, and the highest spatial resolution within a reasonable acquisition time. The performance of the RF coil was additionally evaluated by in vivo B1 mapping.
Results:
A comparison of B1 per unit power, flip angle distribution, and anatomic images showed a fairly homogeneous excitation for the smaller joints (elbow, wrist, and ankle), while for the larger joints, the shoulder and especially the knee, B1 inhomogeneities and limited penetration depth were more pronounced. However, the greater part of the shoulder joint could be imaged.In vivo images rendered very fine anatomic details such as fascicles of the median nerve and the branching of the nerve bundles. High-resolution images of cartilage, labrum, and tendons could be acquired. Additionally, turbo spin echo (TSE) and inversion recovery sequences performed very well.
Conclusions:
This study demonstrates that the concept of two four-channel transmit/receive RF arrays can be used as a multipurpose coil for high-resolutionin vivo MR imaging of the musculoskeletal system at 7 T. Not only gradient echo but also typical clinical and SAR-intensive sequences such as STIR and TSE performed well. Imaging of small structures and peripheral nerves could in particular benefit from this technique.
Das verbraucherschützende Widerrufsrecht ist in die Jahre gekommen. Als Ergebnis der zunehmenden Rechtszersplitterung im europäischen Richtlinienrecht hat sich eine unüberschaubare Bandbreite an Ausgestaltungsformen in den mitgliedstaatlichen Rechtssystemen herausgebildet. Effektivitätseinbußen, Wettbewerbsverzerrungen und ein hohes Maß an Rechtsunsicherheit sind die Folgen. Zurückführen lässt sich die kostenintensive Fragmentierung des Verbrauchervertragsrechts auf die bisherige Regelungspolitik der Mindestharmonisierung, die es den Mitgliedstaaten erlaubt, von dem durch die Richtlinien gesetzten Mindeststandard durch „überschießende Umsetzung” abzuweichen. Der Unionsgesetzgeber versucht dem vermehrt durch einen Prozess der Vollharmonisierung zu begegnen: Neben Reformen der Richtlinie über Verbraucherkredite (VerbrKrRL) sowie der Timesharing-Richtlinie (TimesharingRL), liegt seit dem 8. Oktober 2008 nunmehr auch der Entwurf einer Rahmenrichtlinie über die Rechte der Verbraucher (VRRL-E) vor. Danach sollen die bisherigen Richtlinien über Haustürgeschäfte (HaustürgeschäfteRL), Fernabsatzverträge (FARL), missbräuchliche Klauseln sowie Verbrauchsgüterkäufe vereinigt werden. Für das verbraucherschützende Widerrufsrecht ist damit zum einen die Herausbildung einheitlicher Kernelemente verbunden, zum anderen tritt es in Konkurrenz zu umfassenden Informationspflichten, die ebenfalls den Schutz des Verbrauchers vor dem unüberlegten Abschluss riskanter bzw. nachteiliger Verträge zum Ziel haben.
Angesichts dieser Entwicklung stellt sich im Folgenden die Frage nach der Zukunft des unionsrechtlichen Widerrufsrechts. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist dabei die Klärung des Verhältnisses zu den verbraucherschützenden Informationspflichten. Dazu bedarf es zunächst der Herausarbeitung einheitlicher Kernelemente des Widerrufsrechts im vollharmonisierten Richtlinienrecht (II.) sowie einer Systematisierung der sekundärrechtlichen Informationspflichten im Anschluss eine kritische Gegenüberstellung der Vor- und Nachteile beider Schutzinstrumente erfolgen kann (IV.).
Die Anforderungen an das energiesparende Bauen sind mit der Einführung der Energieeinsparverordnung (EnEV) 2009 auch im Industrie- und Gewerbebau deutlich verschärft worden. Einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Energieeinsparung liefert die Minimierung des Transmissionswärmetransfers. Analysiert man Gebäudehüllen in Metallleichtbauweise stellt man fest, dass eine Erhöhung der Wärmedämmstärke allein noch nicht zielführend ist, zusätzlich sind Wärmebrückeneffekte zu berücksichtigen und deren Einflüsse auf die Wärmetransmission zu reduzieren. Neben der Bedeutung für die Energieeinsparung ist eine wärmetechnisch optimierte Detailausbildung auch erforderlich, um einen ausreichenden Feuchteschutz (Vermeidung von Tauwasser und Schimmelpilz) zu realisieren und so Schäden zu vermeiden. Ein wichtiges Hilfsmittel stellt hierzu der vom Industrieverband für Bausysteme im Metallleichtbau (IFBS) herausgegebene Wärmebrückenatlas der Metall-Sandwichbauweise dar.
Im Herbst 2009 wurde das “Deutsche Gütesiegel Nachhaltiges Bauen” für die Gebäudetypen Industriebauten und Handelsbauten offiziell vorgestellt. Die Ökobilanz als wichtiger Baustein der Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung wird somit auch im Industrie- und Gewerbebau zukünftig stark an Bedeutung gewinnen.
Der vorliegende Beitrag beinhaltet einen Vergleich der Umweltleistung verschiedener Bauweisen des Industrie- und Gewerbebaus, die durch die Ökobilanzierung quantifizierbar wird, anhand von momentan verfügbaren Daten und Methoden. Es werden ausgewählte Ergebnisse sowie vorhandene Unsicherheiten und daraus resultierender Forschungsbedarf aufgezeigt.
The CellDrum technology (The term 'CellDrum technology' includes a couple of slightly different technological setups for measuring lateral mechanical tension in various types of cell monolayers or 3D-tissue constructs) was designed to quantify the contraction rate and mechanical tension of self-exciting cardiac myocytes. Cells were grown either within flexible, circular collagen gels or as monolayer on top of respective 1-mum thin silicone membranes. Membrane and cells were bulged outwards by air pressure. This biaxial strain distribution is rather similar the beating, blood-filled heart. The setup allowed presetting the mechanical residual stress level externally by adjusting the centre deflection, thus, mimicking hypertension in vitro. Tension was measured as oscillating differential pressure change between chamber and environment. A 0.5-mm thick collagen-cardiac myocyte tissue construct induced after 2 days of culturing (initial cell density 2 x 10(4) cells/ml), a mechanical tension of 1.62 +/- 0.17 microN/mm(2). Mechanical load is an important growth regulator in the developing heart, and the orientation and alignment of cardiomyocytes is stress sensitive. Therefore, it was necessary to develop the CellDrum technology with its biaxial stress-strain distribution and defined mechanical boundary conditions. Cells were exposed to strain in two directions, radially and circumferentially, which is similar to biaxial loading in real heart tissues. Thus, from a biomechanical point of view, the system is preferable to previous setups based on uniaxial stretching.
Bilaterale stromale Hornhauttrübungen sind für den Augenarzt eine differenzialdiagnostische Herausforderung. Im folgenden Beitrag werden 2 Patieninnen (30 und 36 Jahre) mit unterschiedlich stark ausgeprägter stromaler diffuser Hornhauttrübung vorgestellt. Patientin 1 war kleinwüchsig (114 cm) und Patientin 2 normal groß (172 cm). Beide Patientinnen wiesen veränderte Gelenkstrukturen an Hand und Fußgelenken sowie diffuse stromale Hornhauttrübungen auf. Des Weiteren lagen eine Mitral- und Aorteninsuffizienz (Patientin 1) bzw. eine Aorteninsuffizienz (Patientin 2) vor. Die stromalen diffusen Hornhauttrübungen ließen im Zusammenhang mit den Gelenkveränderungen ein Scheie-Syndrom vermuten. Therapeutisch ist bei Patienten mit Visusminderung eine (lamelläre) Keratoplastik sinnvoll.
Autonomous robotic systems for penetrating thick ice shells with simultaneous collecting of scientific data are very promising devices in both terrestrial (glacier, climate research) and extra-terrestrial applications. Technical challenges in development of such systems are numerous and include 3D-navigation, an appropriate energy source, motion control, etc. Not less important is the problem of forward contamination of the pristine glacial environments with microorganisms and biomolecules from the surface of the probe. This study was devoted to establishing a laboratory model for microbial contamination of a newly constructed ice-melting probe called IceMole and to analyse the viability and amount of the contaminating microorganisms as a function of distance. The used bacterial strains were Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6051) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 11775). The main objective was development of an efficient and reliable in-situ decontamination method of the melting probe. Therefore, several chemical substances were tested in respect of their efficacy to eliminate bacteria on the surface of the melting probe at low temperature (0 - 5 °C) and at continuous dilution by melted water. Our study has shown that at least 99.9% decontamination of the IceMole can be successfully achieved by the injection of 30% (v/v) hydrogen peroxide and 3% (v/v) sodium hypochlorite into the drilling site. We were able to reproduce this result in both time-dependent and depth-dependent experiments. The sufficient amount of 30% (v/v) H₂O₂ or 3% (v/v) NaClO has been found to be approximately 18 L per cm² of the probe’s surface.
In this paper, we will provide a feasible mission design for a multiple-rendezvous mission to Jupiter's Trojans. It is based on solar electric propulsion, as being currently used on the DAWN spacecraft, and other flight-proven technology. First, we have selected a set of mission objectives, the prime objective being the detection of water -especially subsurface water -to provide evidence for the Trojans' formation at large solar distances. Based on DAWN and other comparable missions, we have determined suitable payload instruments to achieve these objectives. Afterwards, we have designed a spacecraft that is able to carry the selected payload to the Trojan region and rendezvous successively with three target bodies within a maximum mission duration of 15 years. Accurate low-thrust trajectories have been obtained with a global low-thrust trajectory optimization program (InTrance). During the transfer from Earth to the first target, the spacecraft is propelled by two RIT-22 ion engines from EADS Astrium, whereas a single RIT-15 is used for transfers within the Trojan region to reduce the required power. For power generation, the spacecraft uses a multi-junction solar array that is supported by concentrators. To achieve moderate mission costs, we have restricted the launch mass to a maximum of 1600 kg, the maximum interplanetary injection capability of a Soyuz/Fregat launcher. Our final layout has a mass of 1400 kg, yielding a margin of about 14%. Nestor (a member of the L4-population) was determined as the first mission target. It can be reached within 4.6 years from launch. The fuel mass ratio for this transfer is about 35%. The stay time at Nestor is 1.2 years. Eurymedon was selected as the second target (transfer time 3.5 years, stay time 3.0 years) and Irus as the third target (transfer time 2.2 years). The transfers within the Trojan L4-population can be accomplished with fuel mass ratios of about 3% for each trajectory leg. Including the stay times in orbit around the targets, the mission can be accomplished within a total duration of about 14.5 years. According to our mission analysis, it is also feasible to fly to the L5-population with similar flight times. It has to be noted that -for a first analysis -we have taken only the named targets into account. Allowing also rendezvous with unnamed objects will very likely decrease the mission duration. Based on a scaling of DAWN's mission costs (due to comparable scientific instruments and mission objectives), and taking into account the longer mission duration and the potential re-use of already developed technology, we have estimated that these three rendezvous can be accomplished with a budget of about 250 Million Euros, i.e. about 25% of ROSETTA's budget.
The chemical imaging sensor is a semiconductor-based chemical sensor that can visualize the two-dimensional distribution of specific ions or molecules in the solution. In this study, we developed a miniaturized chemical imaging sensor system with an OLED display panel as a light source that scans the sensor plate. In the proposed configuration, the display panel is placed directly below the sensor plate and illuminates the back surface. The measured area defined by illumination can be arbitrarily customized to fit the size and the shape of the sample to be measured. The waveform of the generated photocurrent, the currentvoltage characteristics and the pH sensitivity were investigated and pH imaging with this miniaturized system was demonstrated.
The chemical imaging sensor is a semiconductor-based chemical sensor that can visualize the spatial distribution of chemical species. For the practical application of this sensor, artifacts in the chemical images due to defects of the semiconductor substrate and contamination of the sensing surface etc. have been a major problem. An image correction method was developed to eliminate the influence of nonuniformity of individual sensor plate.
The objectives of the present work are to characterize the Gas Metal Arc Welding process of DP 600 sheet steel and to summarize the modelling techniques. The time-temperature evolution during the welding cycle was measured experimentally and modelled with the softwaretool SimWeld. To model the phase transformations during the welding cycle dilatometer tests were done to quantify the parameters for phase field modelling by MICRESS®. The important input parameters are interface mobility, nucleation density, etc. A contribution was made to include austenite to bainite transformation in MICRESS®. This is useful to predict the microstructure in the fast cooling segments. The phase transformation model is capable to predict the microstructure along the heating and cooling cycles of welding. Tensile tests have shown the evidence of failure at the heat affected zone, which has the ferrite-tempered martensite microstructure.
Leon Battista Alberti, probably the most innovative architect of early Renaissance Italy, has always fascinated scholars by virtue of the striking interpenetration of theory and practice manifest in his work. As an architect, Alberti was an autodidact. Without the benefit of the formative influence of a master or design education, the roots of his conception of architecture lie in his intellectual formation through humanistic rhetoric. The present study demonstrates with reference to a specific project — the Tempietto of the Holy Sepulchre in Florence — how Alberti’s humanist approach conditioned his method of architectural design.
Kurzarbeit war und ist eines der wesentlichen Elemente der Unternehmen, um dem durch die Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise begründeten Arbeitskräfteüberhang begegnen zu können. Laut statistischer Mitteilung der Bundesagentur für Arbeit waren im Mai 2009 ca. 1,52 Mio. Arbeitnehmer in Kurzarbeit, im März 2010 waren es immer noch 830.000 Arbeitnehmer, die Kurzarbeitergeld bezogen haben. Bis Ende 2010 können Arbeitgeber Kurzarbeit noch für die verlängerte Höchstbezugsdauer von bis zu 18 Monaten beantragen. Zudem hat der Bundestag am 8.7.2010 eine nochmalige Verlängerung der Erstattung der Sozialversicherungsbeiträge bis März 2012 verabschiedet. Trotzdem müssen zahlreiche Arbeitgeber inzwischen feststellen, dass sie allein mit dem Mittel der Kurzarbeit nicht um einen Personalabbau herumkommen. Dies gilt insbesondere für diejenigen Unternehmen, die gleich zu Beginn der Krise im Herbst 2008 Kurzarbeit eingeführt haben und bei denen deshalb die damals noch geltende 24-monatige Höchstbezugsdauer im Herbst 2010 auslaufen wird
