Summary and Conclusions PCIs were clearly effective in terms of their antibacterial effects with the strains tested. This efficacy increased with the time the bacteries were exposed to PCIs. The bactericidal action has proved to be irreversible. PCIs were significantly less effective in shadowed areas. PCI exposure caused multiple protein damages as observed in SDS PAGE studies. There was no single but multiple molecular mechanism causing the bacterial death.
Masonry infill walls are the most traditional enclosure system that is still widely used in RC frame buildings all over the world, particularly in seismic active regions. Although infill walls are usually neglected in seismic design, during an earthquake event they are subjected to in-plane and out-of-plane forces that can act separately or simultaneously. Since observations of damage to buildings after recent earthquakes showed detrimental effects of in-plane and out-of-plane load interaction on infill walls, the number of studies that focus on influence of in-plane damage on out-of-plane response has significantly increased. However, most of the xperimental campaigns have considered only solid infills and there is a lack of combined in-plane and out-of-plane experimental tests on masonry infills with openings, although windows and doors strongly affect seismic performance. In this paper, two types of experimental tests on infills with window openings are presented. The first is a pure out-of-plane test and the second one is a sequential in-plane and out-of-plane test aimed at investigating the effects of existing in-plane damage on outof-plane response. Additionally, findings from two tests with similar load procedure that were carried out on fully infilled RC frames in the scope of the same project are used for comparison. Test results clearly show that window opening increased vulnerability of infills to combined seismic actions and that prevention of damage in infills with openings is of the utmost importance for seismic safety.
A new method for improved autoclave loading within the restrictive framework of helicopter manufacturing is proposed. It is derived from experimental and numerical studies of the curing process and aims at optimizing tooling positions in the autoclave for fast and homogeneous heat-up. The mold positioning is based on two sets of information. The thermal properties of the molds, which can be determined via semi-empirical thermal simulation. The second information is a previously determined distribution of heat transfer coefficients inside the autoclave. Finally, an experimental proof of concept is performed to show a cycle time reduction of up to 31% using the proposed methodology.
Physical interaction with small solar system bodies (SSSB) is key for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). The design of mining missions requires good understanding of SSSB properties, including composition, surface and interior structure, and thermal environment. But as the saying goes "If you've seen one asteroid, you've seen one Asteroid": Although some patterns may begin to appear, a stable and reliable scheme of SSSB classification still has to be evolved. Identified commonalities would enable generic ISRU technology and spacecraft design approaches with a high degree of re-use. Strategic approaches require much broader in-depth characterization of the SSSB populations of interest to the ISRU community. The DLR-ESTEC GOSSAMER Roadmap Science Working Groups identified target-flexible Multiple Near-Earth asteroid (NEA) Rendezvous (MNR) as one of the missions only feasible with solar sail propulsion, showed the ability to access any inclination and a wide range of heliocentric distances as well as continuous operation close to Earth's orbit where low delta-v objects reside.
Traglast- und Einspielanalysen sind vereinfachte doch exakte Verfahren der klassischen Plastizitätstheorie, die neben ausreichender Verformbarkeit keine einschränkenden Voraussetzungen beinhalten. Die Vereinfachungen betreffen die Beschaffung der Daten und Modelle für Details der Lastgeschichte und des Stoffverhaltens. Eine FEM-basierte Traglast- und Einspielanalyse für ideal plastisches Material wurde auf ein kinematisch verfestigendes Materialgesetz erweitert und in das Finite Element Programm PERMAS implementiert. In einem einfachen Zug-Torsionsexperiment wurde eine Hohlprobe mit konstanter Torsion und zyklischer Zugbelastung beansprucht, um die neue Implementierung zu verifizieren. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Einspielanalyse gut mit den experimentellen Ergebnissen übereinstimmt. Bei Verfestigung lassen sich wesentlich größere Sicherheiten nachweisen. Dieses Potential bedarf weiterer experimenteller Absicherung. Parallel dazu ist die Eisnpieltheorie auf fortschrittliche Verfestigungsansätze zu erweitern.
Electric flight has the potential for a more sustainable and energy-saving way of aviation compared to fossil fuel aviation. The electric motor can be used as a generator inflight to regenerate energy during descent. Three different approaches to regenerating with electric propeller powertrains are proposed in this paper. The powertrain is to be set up in a wind tunnel to determine the propeller efficiency in both working modes as well as the noise emissions. Furthermore, the planned flight tests are discussed. In preparation for these tests, a yaw stability analysis is performed with the result that the aeroplane is controllable during flight and in the most critical failure case. The paper shows the potential for inflight regeneration and addresses the research gaps in the dual role of electric powertrains for propulsion and regeneration of general aviation aircraft.
Electromechanical model of hiPSC-derived ventricular cardiomyocytes cocultured with fibroblasts

The CellDrum provides an experimental setup to study the mechanical effects of fibroblasts co-cultured with hiPSC-derived ventricular cardiomyocytes. Multi-scale computational models based on the Finite Element Method are developed. Coupled electrical cardiomyocyte-fibroblast models (cell level) are embedded into reaction-diffusion equations (tissue level) which compute the propagation of the action potential in the cardiac tissue. Electromechanical coupling is realised by an excitation-contraction model (cell level) and the active stress arising during contraction is added to the passive stress in the force balance, which determines the tissue displacement (tissue level). Tissue parameters in the model can be identified experimentally to the specific sample.

The results of a statistical investigation of 42 fixed-wing, small to medium sized (20 kg−1000 kg) reconnaissance unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) are presented. Regression analyses are used to identify correlations of the most relevant geometry dimensions with the UAV’s maximum take-off mass. The findings allow an empirical based geometry-build up for a complete unmanned aircraft by referring to its take-off mass only. This provides a bridge between very early design stages (initial sizing) and the later determination of shapes and dimensions. The correlations might be integrated into a UAV sizing environment and allow designers to implement more sophisticated drag and weight estimation methods in this process. Additional information on correlation factors for a rough drag estimation methodology indicate how this technique can significantly enhance the accuracy of early design iterations.
Enceladus explorer - A maneuverable subsurface probe for autonomous navigation through deep ice

Working paper distributed at 2nd Annual Next Generation Telecommunications Conference 2009, 13th – 14th October 2009, Brussels 14 pages Abstract Governments all over Europe are in the process of adopting new broadband strategies. The objective is to create modern telecommunications networks based on powerful broadband infrastructures". In doing so, they aim for innovative and investment-friendly concepts. For instance, in a recently published consultation paper on the subject the German regulator BNetzA declared that it will take “greater account of … reducing risks, securing the investment and innovation power, providing planning certainty and transparency – in order to support and advance broadband rollout in Germany”. It further states that when regulating wholesale rates it has to be ensured that “… adequate incentives for network rollout are provided on the one hand, while sustainable and fair competition is ensured on the other”. Also an EC draft recommendation on regulated network access is about to set new standards for the regulation of next generation access networks. According to the recommendation the prices of new assets shall be based on costs plus a projectspecific risk premium to be included in the costs of capital for the investment risk incurred by the operator. This approach has been criticised from various sides. In particular it has been questioned whether such an approach is adequate to meet the objectives of encouraging both competition and investment into next generation access networks. Against this background, the concept of “long term risk sharing contracts” has been proposed recently as an approach which does not only incorporate the various additional risks involved in the deployment of NGA infrastructure, but has several other advantages. This paper will demonstrate that the concept allows for competition to evolve at both the retail and wholesale level on fair, objective, non-discriminatory and transparent terms and conditions. Moreover, it ensures the highest possible investment incentive in line with socially desirable outcome. The paper is organised as follows: The next section will briefly outline the importance of encouraging competition and investment in an NGA-environment. The third section will specify the design of long term risk sharing contracts in view of achieving these objectives. The fourth section will examine potential problems associated with the concept. In doing so a way of how to deal with them will be elaborated. The last section will look at arguments against long term risk sharing contracts. It will be shown that these arguments are not strong enough to build a case against introducing such contracts.
Unter Energieeffizienz wird verstanden, dass ein definiertes Ziel mit möglichst wenig Energie erreicht wird. Im Beitrag wird zunächst eine Formel zur Berechnung der Gesamtenergieeffizienz eines Gebäudes angegeben. Darauf aufbauend wird ein 3-Säulen-Modell zur Energieeinsparung vorgeschlagen. Es beinhaltet vereinfachte Verfahren zur Berechnung der Betriebseigenschaften von Heizanlagen, raumlufttechnischen Anlagen und Kühl- und Kaltwasseranlagen. Am Beispiel einer RLT-Anlage wird die Vorgehensweise der Bewertung näher erläutert. Zusammenfassend wird festgestellt, dass das vereinfachte Verfahren eine schnelle und sichere energetische Bewertung der genannten Anlagen erlaubt,, zu Präsenzwissen führt, die Haupteinflussgrößen aufzeigt und eine Anlagenbewertung ohne Gebäudebewertung gewährleistet. Das vereinfachte Verfahren wird im Frühjahr 2011 verfügbar sein. Es soll Bestandteil der DIN V 18599 werden, und die EnEV 2012 soll darauf Bezug nehmen.
In Anbetracht weltweit zunehmend strengerer klimapolitischer
Ziele steigt auch der Druck für Nutzfahrzeughersteller, effizientere und umweltfreundlichere
Technologien zu entwickeln. Den Blick bei der Bewertung dieser
ausschließlich auf die Fahrzeugnutzung zu richten, ist längst nicht mehr zufriedenstellend.
Im Rahmen dieser Analyse wird ein gegenwärtig auf dem Markt erwerblicher
und in deutschen Städten bereits seit Jahren betriebener Hybridbus
energetisch und ökologisch mit einem konventionell angetriebenen, nahezu baugleichen
Modell entlang des Lebensweges bewertet.
Nach Definition von Ziel und Untersuchungsrahmen wird ein Überblick auf bereits
durchgeführte Lebenszyklusanalysen zu Hybridbussen im Stadtverkehr gegeben
und Schlussfolgerungen für die anschließende Analyse abgeleitet. Diese
wird im Rahmen einer energetischen und ökologischen Bewertung beider Produktsysteme
anhand der Parameter "Primärenergieeinsatz" und "CO2äq Emissionen"
praktiziert. Der Fahrzeugrumpf beider Fahrzeuge des gleichen Modells
wird dabei als einheitlich angenommen, sodass bei dem Vergleich der Herstellung
vereinfacht nur die sich unterscheidenden Komponenten des Antriebstranges
berücksichtigt werden. Die Resultate der Wirkungsabschätzung werden als
Differenz des Hybridbusses gegenüber dem Referenzfahrzeug über die einzelnen
Lebenszyklusphasen dargestellt. Schließlich werden Prognosen getroffen, ab
welcher Strecke die bei der Herstellung erzeugten höheren CO2äq Emissionen
des Hybridantriebstranges gegenüber dem Referenzmodell ausgeglichen werden.
