Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is one of the Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies applicable for producing complex geometries which are typically expensive or difficult to fabricate using conventional methods. This process has been extensively investigated experimentally for various metals and the fabrication process parameters have been established for different applications; however, fabricating 3D glass objects using SLM technology has remained a challenge so far although it could have many applications. This paper presents a summery on various experimental evaluations of a material database incorporating the build parameters of glass powder using the SLM process for jewelry applications.

Geologisch-geotechnischer Planungsprozess von Tunnelbauten mit Schwerpunkt tiefliegender Tunnel

Am 1. Oktober 2013 ist das auf drei Jahre angelegte EU-Forschungsprojekt INSYSME – Innovative Systeme für erdbebentaugliche Ausfachungswände aus Ziegelmauerwerk in Stahlbetonrahmentragwerken – gestartet. Unter der Koordination der Universität Padua beteiligen sich 16 Partner aus sechs europäischen Ländern (Deutschland, Griechenland, Italien, Portugal, Rumänien, Türkei). Als deutsche Partner nehmen die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Mauerziegel aus Bonn, die Universität Kassel sowie das Ingenieurbüro SDA-engineering GmbH aus Herzogenrath, teil. Ziel der deutschen Partner ist die Entwicklung von innovativen Ausfachungssystemen aus monolithischem wärmedämmenden Ziegelmauerwerk, mit denen nicht nur eine erhöhte Erdbebensicherheit, sondern auch die sichere Erfüllung der steigenden Anforderungen aus Windbeanspruchungen gewährleistet werden können. Die Forschungsergebnisse sollen vom Partner SDA-engineering GmbH in die bereits seit einigen Jahren verfügbare Softwarelösung MINEA [1] integriert werden. Weitere Informationen stehen auf den Websites des Projektes [2] zur Verfügung. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden nach einer kurzen thematischen Einführung die Ergebnisse von Tastversuchen an senkrecht zur Ebene belasteten Ausfachungswänden aus Planziegelmauerwerk vorgestellt. Im Anschluss wird das geplante Arbeitsprogramm der deutschen Partner im Projekt INSYSME beschrieben.
Die Erdbeben in Albstadt 1978 (Magnitude 5,7), Roermond 1992 (Magnitude 5,9) oder in Waldkirch 2004 (Magnitude 5,1) haben verdeutlicht, dass die erdbebensichere Auslegung von Mauerwerksbauten auch in Deutschland von großer Bedeutung ist. Bereits im Jahr 1981 wurde die DIN 4149 (1981) “Bauten in deutschen Erdbebengebieten – Lastannahmen, Bemessung und Ausführung üblicher Hochbauten“ eingeführt, in der aber für Mauerwerksbauten nur wenige Anforderungen gestellt wurden. Diese Norm wurde durch den NABau-Arbeitsausschuss “Erdbeben; Sonderfragen“ des Deutschen Instituts für Normung e.V. (DIN) auf Grundlage des Eurocode 8 (2004) vollständig überarbeitet und durch die DIN 4149 (2005) abgelöst, die umfangreiche Regelungen für die seismische Auslegung von Mauerwerksbauten enthält. Mittlerweile liegen die DIN EN 1998-1 (2010) und der Nationale Anhang DIN EN 1998-1/NA (2011) vor, die nach Einarbeitung der Ergebnisse der durchgeführten Anwendungserprobung bauaufsichtlich eingeführt und die DIN 4149 (2005) ersetzen werden. Der folgende Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über die seismische Berechnung und Bemessung von Mauerwerksbauten nach dem europäischen Regelwerk und illustriert deren Anwendung an einem baupraktischen Beispiel.

Molecular-genetic identification of emerged novel invasive pathogens of Asiatic Elm Ulmus pumila L

The dwarf elm Ulmus pumila L. (Ulmaceae) is one of indigenous species of flora in Kazakhstan and forms a basis of dendroflora in virtually all settlements of the region. In the past decade, multiple outbreaks of previously unknown diseases of the small-leaved elm have been registered. In our study, by the molecular-genetic analysis it was found that the pathogens responsible for the outbreaks are microfungi belonging to the genus Fusarium – F. solani and F. oxysporum. The nucleotide sequences (ITS regions) isolated from the diseased trees showed very high similarity with the GenBank control numbers EU625403.1 and FJ478128.1 (100.0 and 99.0 % respectively). Oncoming research will focus on the search of natural microbial antagonists of the discovered phytopathogens.
Network theory provides novel concepts that promise an improved characterization of interacting dynamical systems. Within this framework, evolving networks can be considered as being composed of nodes, representing systems, and of time-varying edges, representing interactions between these systems. This approach is highly attractive to further our understanding of the physiological and pathophysiological dynamics in human brain networks. Indeed, there is growing evidence that the epileptic process can be regarded as a large-scale network phenomenon. We here review methodologies for inferring networks from empirical time series and for a characterization of these evolving networks. We summarize recent findings derived from studies that investigate human epileptic brain networks evolving on timescales ranging from few seconds to weeks. We point to possible pitfalls and open issues, and discuss future perspectives.
The scope of this study is the measurement of endotoxin adsorption rate for carbonized rice husk. It showed good adsorption properties for LPS. During the batch experiments, several techniques were used and optimized for improving the material’s adsorption behavior. Also, with the results obtained it was possible to differentiate the materials according to their adsorption capacity and kinetic characteristics.
Background
True date palms (Phoenix dactylifera L.) are impressive trees and have served as an indispensable source of food for mankind in tropical and subtropical countries for centuries. The aim of this study is to differentiate date palm tree varieties by analysing leaflet cross sections with technical/optical methods and artificial neural networks (ANN).
Results
Fluorescence microscopy images of leaflet cross sections have been taken from a set of five date palm tree cultivars (Hewlat al Jouf, Khlas, Nabot Soltan, Shishi, Um Raheem). After features extraction from images, the obtained data have been fed in a multilayer perceptron ANN with backpropagation learning algorithm.
Conclusions
Overall, an accurate result in prediction and differentiation of date palm tree cultivars was achieved with average prediction in tenfold cross-validation is 89.1% and reached 100% in one of the best ANN.
A technology reference study for a multiple near-Earth object (NEO) rendezvous mission with solar sailcraft is currently carried out by the authors of this paper. The investigated mission builds on previous concepts, but adopts a strong micro-spacecraft philosophy based on the DLR/ESA Gossamer technology. The main scientific objective of the mission is to explore the diversity of NEOs. After direct interplanetary insertion, the solar sailcraft should—within less than 10 years—rendezvous three NEOs that are not only scientifically interesting, but also from the point of human spaceight and planetary defense. In this paper, the objectives of the study are outlined and a preliminary potential mission profile is presented.
This paper describes the modeling of a high-temperature storage system for an existing solar tower power plant with open volumetric receiver technology, which uses air as heat transfer medium (HTF). The storage system model has been developed in the simulation environment Matlab/Simulink®. The storage type under investigation is a packed bed thermal energy storage system which has the characteristics of a regenerator. Thermal energy can be stored and discharged as required via the HTF air. The air mass flow distribution is controlled by valves, and the mass flow by two blowers. The thermal storage operation strategy has a direct and significant impact on the energetic and economic efficiency of the solar tower power plants.
A new trend in automation is to deploy so-called cyber-physical systems (CPS) which combine computation with physical processes. The novel RoboCup Logistics League Sponsored by Festo (LLSF) aims at such CPS logistic scenarios in an automation setting. A team of robots has to produce products from a number of semi-finished products which they have to machine during the game. Different production plans are possible and the robots need to recycle scrap byproducts. This way, the LLSF is a very interesting league offering a number of challenging research questions for planning, coordination, or communication in an application-driven scenario. In this paper, we outline the objectives of the LLSF and present steps for developing the league further towards a benchmark for logistics scenarios for CPS. As a major milestone we present the new automated referee system which helps in governing the game play as well as keeping track of the scored points in a very complex factory scenario.
Technische Cellulose wurde als möglicher Rohstoff zur fermentativen Produktbildung untersucht. Hierfür wird Cellulose in der Lignocellulose-Bioraffinerie hergestellt und daraus Hydrolysat gewonnen. Die Prüfung der technischen Hydrolysate als Substrate erfolgte anhand eines breiten Spektrums an Bioprodukten, von Kraftstoffen wie Ethanolund Butanol, bis zu den Dicarbonsäuren Itacon- und Bernsteinsäure. Dabei werden Bakterien, Hefen und Pilze als Produktionsorganismen eingesetzt. Die einzelnen Herstellverfahren stellen unterschiedliche Anforderungen an die Substrathandhabung. Im Fall der Ethanol- und Butanol-Gewinnung kann eine simultane Saccharifizierung und Fermentierung (SSF) durchgeführt werden. Aufgrund der Produkttoxizität erfordert die Butanol-Herstellung dabei eine In-situ-Produktabtrennung durch Lösemittelimprägnierte Partikel. Die Herstellung der beiden Dicarbonsäuren unterscheidet sich in der Sensitivität der verwendeten Mikroorganismen gegenüber Inhibitoren, die in Spuren im Hydrolysat enthalten sind. Die Bernteinsäurebildung mit Actinobacillussuccinogenes kann mit unbehandeltem Hydrolysat erfolgen. Dagegen erfordert die Gewinnung von Itaconsäure mit A. terreus eine Detoxifizierung des Hydrolysats. Insgesamt konnte gezeigt werden, dass sämtliche Bioraffinerie-Hydrolysate als Substrate für unterschiedliche Fermentationen geeignet sind.
Bacillus pumilus reveals a remarkably high resistance to hydrogen peroxide provoked oxidative stress

Bacillus pumilus is characterized by a higher oxidative stress resistance than other comparable industrially relevant Bacilli such as B. subtilis or B. licheniformis. In this study the response of B. pumilus to oxidative stress was investigated during a treatment with high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide at the proteome, transcriptome and metabolome level. Genes/proteins belonging to regulons, which are known to have important functions in the oxidative stress response of other organisms, were found to be upregulated, such as the Fur, Spx, SOS or CtsR regulon. Strikingly, parts of the fundamental PerR regulon responding to peroxide stress in B. subtilis are not encoded in the B. pumilus genome. Thus, B. pumilus misses the catalase KatA, the DNA-protection protein MrgA or the alkyl hydroperoxide reductase AhpCF. Data of this study suggests that the catalase KatX2 takes over the function of the missing KatA in the oxidative stress response of B. pumilus. The genome-wide expression analysis revealed an induction of bacillithiol (Cys-GlcN-malate, BSH) relevant genes. An analysis of the intracellular metabolites detected high intracellular levels of this protective metabolite, which indicates the importance of bacillithiol in the peroxide stress resistance of B. pumilus.
Shakedown analysis of Reissner-Mindlin plates using the edge-based smoothed finite element method

This paper concerns the development of a primal-dual algorithm for limit and shakedown analysis of Reissner-Mindlin plates made of von Mises material. At each optimization iteration, the lower bound of the shakedown load multiplier is calculated simultaneously with the upper bound using the duality theory. An edge-based smoothed finite element method (ES-FEM) combined with the discrete shear gap (DSG) technique is used to improve the accuracy of the solutions and to avoid the transverse shear locking behaviour. The method not only possesses all inherent features of convergence and accuracy from ES-FEM, but also ensures that the total number of variables in the optimization problem is kept to a minimum compared with the standard finite element formulation. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the present method.

Two single-incision mini-slings used for treating urinary incontinence in women are compared with respect to the stresses they produce in their surrounding tissue. In an earlier paper we experimentally observed that these implants produce considerably different stress distributions in a muscle tissue equivalent. Here we perform 2D finite element analyses to compare the shear stresses and normal stresses in the tissue equivalent for the two meshes and to investigate their failure behavior. The results clearly show that the Gynecare TVT fails for increasing loads in a zipper-like manner because it gradually debonds from the surrounding tissue. Contrary to that, the tissue at the ends of the DynaMesh-SIS direct may rupture but only at higher loads. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental observations thus the computational model helps to interpret the experimental results and provides a tool for qualitative evaluation of mesh implants.
Successful bone sawing requires a high level of skill and experience, which could be gained by the use of Virtual Reality-based simulators. A key aspect of these medical simulators is realistic force feedback. The aim of this paper is to model the bone sawing process in order to develop a valid training simulator for the bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, the most often applied corrective surgery in case of a malposition of the mandible. Bone samples from a human cadaveric mandible were tested using a designed experimental system. Image processing and statistical analysis were used for the selection of four models for the bone sawing process. The results revealed a polynomial dependency between the material removal rate and the applied force. Differences between the three segments of the osteotomy line and between the cortical and cancellous bone were highlighted.
There is significant interest in sampling subglacial environments for geobiological studies, but they are difficult to access. Existing ice-drilling technologies make it cumbersome to maintain microbiologically clean access for sample acquisition and environmental stewardship of potentially fragile subglacial aquatic ecosystems. The IceMole is a maneuverable subsurface ice probe for clean in situ analysis and sampling of glacial ice and subglacial materials. The design is based on the novel concept of combining melting and mechanical propulsion. It can change melting direction by differential heating of the melting head and optional side-wall heaters. The first two prototypes were successfully tested between 2010 and 2012 on glaciers in Switzerland and Iceland. They demonstrated downward, horizontal and upward melting, as well as curve driving and dirt layer penetration. A more advanced probe is currently under development as part of the Enceladus Explorer (EnEx) project. It offers systems for obstacle avoidance, target detection, and navigation in ice. For the EnEx-IceMole, we will pay particular attention to clean protocols for the sampling of subglacial materials for biogeochemical analysis. We plan to use this probe for clean access into a unique subglacial aquatic environment at Blood Falls, Antarctica, with return of a subglacial brine sample.
A technology reference study for a solar polar mission is presented. The study uses novel analytical methods to quantify the mission design space including the required sail performance to achieve a given solar polar observation angle within a given timeframe and thus to derive mass allocations for the remaining spacecraft sub-systems, that is excluding the solar sail sub-system. A parametric, bottom-up, system mass budget analysis is then used to establish the required sail technology to deliver a range of science payloads, and to establish where such payloads can be delivered to within a given timeframe. It is found that a solar polar mission requires a solar sail of side-length 100–125 m to deliver a ‘sufficient value’ minimum science payload, and that a 2.5 μm sail film substrate is typically required, however the design is much less sensitive to the boom specific mass.

Developing a new production host from a blueprint: Bacillus pumilus as an industrial enzyme producer

This paper develops a new finite element method (FEM)-based upper bound algorithm for limit and shakedown analysis of hardening structures by a direct plasticity method. The hardening model is a simple two-surface model of plasticity with a fixed bounding surface. The initial yield surface can translate inside the bounding surface, and it is bounded by one of the two equivalent conditions: (1) it always stays inside the bounding surface or (2) its centre cannot move outside the back-stress surface. The algorithm gives an effective tool to analyze the problems with a very high number of degree of freedom. Our numerical results are very close to the analytical solutions and numerical solutions in literature.
Today, the assembly of laser systems requires a large share of manual operations due to its complexity regarding the optimal alignment of optics. Although the feasibility of automated alignment of laser optics has been shown in research labs, the development effort for the automation of assembly does not meet economic requirements – especially for low-volume laser production. This paper presents a model-based and sensor-integrated assembly execution approach for flexible assembly cells consisting of a macro-positioner covering a large workspace and a compact micromanipulator with camera attached to the positioner. In order to make full use of available models from computer-aided design (CAD) and optical simulation, sensor systems at different levels of accuracy are used for matching perceived information with model data. This approach is named "chain of refined perception", and it allows for automated planning of complex assembly tasks along all major phases of assembly such as collision-free path planning, part feeding, and active and passive alignment. The focus of the paper is put on the in-process image-based metrology and information extraction used for identifying and calibrating local coordinate systems as well as the exploitation of that information for a part feeding process for micro-optics. Results will be presented regarding the processes of automated calibration of the robot camera as well as the local coordinate systems of part feeding area and robot base.
